View Full Version : Is anyone here actually in the Army?

First time poster, quasi-long time reader...
I am just curious because I am. Most other army people are too busy playing Halo and world of warcraft, or it just seems that way, so I was just wondering if i'ts just my lame unit. If you are, add me to you buddy list, Daishi84.
And just for the sake of having a topic that will lead to some discussion, do you think there are any real world tactics going on in the game? Or any tactics for that matter? When the one other person in all of Darmstadt that actually plays and I play, we squad up and actually run around from cover to cover, covering eachother's back. its easier than using in game speech since we are in the same room. When we are in close quaters, we check corners and clear areas before proceeding and of the such... I know its lame, but it adds some fun to it. Most people, unless they are sniping or trap laying, seem to lonewolf and hard charge, which to my dismay works just as well... any thoughts?

I am a sleeper agent for Osama Bin Laden currently living in Nebraska, does that count infidel?
Edit - to actually answer your ques, no not in the Army.
And while I don't use a huge amount of real world tactics, like say leapfroggin each other from cover to cover and what not, I do what makes sense if I can.
Like I generally clear corners when I enter a room for example. But I am more of a charge into the fray kind of guy more than anything else. But if I can use real world, I will. It helps set the mood a bit more, you know?

Not army, better.....Marines :D
The only tactics I had in the army were applied to avoid doing anything. Come to think about it - damn, I was recon!

You know what, I've always wondered why army people don't carry a bulletproof block on their back. They could set it up and have instant cover.

I was an active duty Abrams tanker in the army and I am now in the reserve...
BTW, the only things Marines know how to do right, is roll their sleeves wrong.:D

Yeah, it's a hard life when you don't exist.

Was. 8 years and out. Communications.
Only tactic I can think of that transfers over from the Army, is drawing someone's fire or attention, so your teammates can get around and flank unnoticed.

I am a peaceful guy...hece why I think that anyone is the army has no respect for life. If someone gave me a gun and told me to shoot someone or be shot myself I would stay say no and I would gladly accept a bbullet for someone else.
Sorry but to me the Army is just a bunch of bullies with guns. Sorry.

well someone has to defend Canada and the rest of the North America. I have nothing but respect for the military. They do a job that must be done. Maybe we would have less soldiers out there if Canada put some people forth.

Not army, better.....Marines :DActually, you know the reason that BF2 is the USMC vs MEC? Because they wanted to give the MEC a chance. After all, you see how well Iraq lasted vs the US Army. ;)
But seriously, I spent 14 years as a Scout in the US Army. I do know that basic tactics do work in the game very well, and any real world vets I have teamed up with have been the best teammates. Issue an order and they jump on it. You cover left, they automatically go right. You go in first, they keep an eye on the rear. Its a mentality that is pretty much automatic when you have been in for a bit, and it doesn't usually matter what country they are from either. Its a pretty standard mentality in most militaries(except Iraq's   ). Anyways, feel free to add me to your buddy list if you want to play with other vets. I always welcome fellow soldiers/jar heads/vets of any sort into my squads. They are good people. :D

Former Marine... I remember 2 divisions of Marines (1st Mar Div and 2nd Mar Div) vs 12 Iraqi Division and 9 Army Divs vs 11 Iraqi Divs.. We had to wait for you guys a lot, and we had to give you our food and ammo cuz planes can't carry as much supplies as MPPS (maritime pre-positioned ships).. but that was also the Gulf War.. As far as who's better.. any Marine will say, who knows.. lets beat the crap out of eachother and see whos left standing... As far as real world tactics.. when I can get a good squad (rare) setting up base of fire and scouting units, cover and move.. it all works.. but it takes a good squad.
RANGERS LEAD THE WAY.... behind the Marines. ;) LOL

I have to say, a squad that worked in this way with real world tactics (covering/suppresion fire, fields of fire, moving intelligently from cover to cover, etc) would just about own any round they played. I haven't actually ever seen a squad like this, but I'd like to.
They wouldn't be blazing fast on the battlefield and be tearing around from flag to flag or anything, as they would be moving cautiously and covering each other, but their kill/death ratios would be like 20 to 1. The minute some poor enemy soldiers came around the corner towards them it would be like:
"Echo command this is Echo Charlie Lima Three, Be advised I've made contact with multiple hostiles, over"
"Roger That Lima Three, commence firing. Echo command, out"
"Roger that command, out."
And that poor guy would never be that unhappy again as he gets lit up by six guys at once... over and over and over again.

The USMC only went so far as Kuwait City. Here I got you a map, hope you can read...it. ;)

My heart goes out to the soldiers of our war torn nations. I pray that one day we will see peace and hope that we can realize the truth. Fallen soldiers, our brothers and sisters, are being brought home from Afghanistan right now.
May truth bring peace to our future. God bless us all.

Let me say first Maj Damage, I'm not poking fun at you or anyone else. Your sentiments are admirable.
The rest of this post is supposed to be absurd, sarcastic and meant in jest.
May truth bring peace to our future. God bless us all.
I don't want peace in the world. Then there wouldn't be anything to model the Battlefield series on anymore.
Battlefield *Peace* would kind of suck in my opinion. You would run around and instead of shooting at people with a gun you would blow them a kiss. And instead of sneaking up on someone and knifing them you would tap them on the shoulder and hand them a flower instead.
Imagine the scrolling text thingie in the upper left screen.

Actually its more like "OH @%#$!! Shoot that bastard!!! BRAP!!! Nice shot Smith."
ROE and radio comms go out the window in combat. I was in tanks and there are very rigid fire commands that also go out the turret when you are in combat. It looks nice in the movies though.:D

Actually, Canada is definitely "putting some people forth." The Canadians are excellent soldiers and are among the best marksmen in the world.

HI new forum user here...could not help reading this thread...
But yea, im in the army and no, its pretty hard to do real army tactics in this game unless everyone on your squad is on the same page...I actually was in a squad that did successfully flank some dude who was in those AA turrets while he had a support dude covering him. 2 Guys covering fire from the from the front and the rest of us flanking from the right.
The thing with sqaud tactics is that everyone needs good commo or everything is out the window.
The thing about this game, BF2 and a lot of FPS is that everyone loves to rush becasue they know they can respawn and only thing that dies is their ego, not like in real life, you can't respawn. :dead:

Hahah yea, I remember stuff like that when I was doing convoys in Iraq. My rear gunner was like "There is a car sneaking up on us!" and im like "Shoot the muthaf***er then!!!!"

Hey Lumpia_h4x... Werd brother!!! We got ripped by the S3 during training when he could hear our convos on the jump net. Most fire commands I heard issued included swearing:D . What was your MOS? Mine was 19k (I was a tank gunner) for those that did not know what armored crewmen are.
Agreed also that real army tactics do not work in game unless there are all members of a squad participating in the assault. The good old; Find Fix Flank, and Finish does not work when guys you killed respawn behind you / to the side of you and know your location and troop strength.
Army Tanking Tactics applied in 2142 is also not really what we'd use in today's battles. US Army tank doctrine was 99 percent designed for open fields and rolling hills ('ala Europe and Middle East). The maps aint big enough for the Armor to roll out as it's intended to be used. Cities = TANK DEATH!!! Lucky for us armor whores that you cannot get into and shoot out of most buildings in the game.:p
I'll look for you guys on the BF!!

We have a few troops playing at Tactical Gamer and it's the most likely place to find real-life tactics and comms, since the large majority of players use VOIP.
I got kicked out, stupid knee injuries. Second week of basic, sucks to be me.
