Simple Answer is NO hard copy !! No chance with the Fantastic EA LINK lol
All BF2 boosters were released through the downloader with the exception of Special Forces which preceded EAownloader :D

You can now buy the BF2 boosters in stores, but when they were released they were only released via EA Downloader. I hope EA learned from the mistake of not allowing people to buy physical copies, but since they didn't learn anything else from BF2 I'm not particularly hopeful.
Thanks Dibbly, I was hoping for EA to put out a hard copy so I wouldnt have to deal with the downloader to bad.

They won't put physical copies into stores for awhile at least. The whole point of the EA DLer is that it saves them a ton of money in printing/shipping/retailer costs.
I've heard some rumors that they might release download cards at retail shops this time around, though. This would be a wise move. The DL card would alow you to purchase a CD/DL key in a retail place, then use it to download the booster without having to use a creditcard.
I'm sure it would increase sales a lot.

Boosters in store what country ? Have never seen them in the UK
Basil.

I like too download my games, but thats not for everyone so they should put out a hard copy. If they don't do hard copy they should sell download cards because not every one has a visa.
Dibbly you could download bf:sf on the ea downloader, but it was also sold in stores as well.

yeah but, pressing DVDs and packaging costs money, and downloads don't have significant overheads, so there is NO WAY that hard copies will be available!

No booster pack in Korea.
Hope they are wise enough to release it as a DL card.

Give it time, I'm sure EA will try to squeeze this for all the money they can get out of it.
Obviously the retail price for vanilla 2142 AND the income from the ads is insufficient...
Wait 3 months and ya probably be in store.

Yeah, when no servers are running the booster pack any more!

Prepaid cards are a very possible option and there are rumours about EA is going to implement this option. I think this would solve the problem with all that people without a credit card.

I certainly don;t want to download it.
I've suffered two hard driver crashes in the last 12 months. Thankfully I take regular backups so I've not even lost so much as a save game (as long as the save games are saved in 'My Documents') but the reinstallation of apps is a complete pain. When that reinstallation requires a download it's even worse.
So no CD = no money from me. It's bad enough having to d/l all the Windows updates without having to worry about this crap taking up my net connection as well.

And isn't the EA Link limited to 5 downloads? That is rather annoying if you often do a fresh windows install.
But I think there was a way you could save the booster packs so they wouldn't have to be downloaded again, does anyone remember that?

i like to have a hard copy of my game, it just makes me feel better, since whenever EA link is down, you people who DL'd it apparently can't play, plus i just prefer having a hard copy of my game to hold
if they make prepaid cards. wouldn't it be just as easy to pint discs? i would by a DVD version of a card version even if it was $5 more

File & Install Questions
Q: Can I make a backup copy for my own use after I download?
A: Yes. The default location the downloaded files go to is C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\EA Downloader\cache\accountname\. Inside there you will see folders or files for what you wish to backup.
Q: Is there a limit to the number of times I can download/install?
A: No. Once purchased you can install and download at your leisure.

I agree. I'd pay more for the hard copy.
Steam is great for those of us in the UK because of their insistence on dollar pricing and the current fantastic exchange rate to Sterling. No such joy with EA. It remains to be seen exactly how it works but I bet they want £10 for something they are selling to US citizens for $10 so I'm paying more already.
I'd prefer a CD for that.

I think us EU users get hit with some kind of VAT when we purchase software online from the USA. Same deal with WOW subscriptions.

You get hit with VAT when you buy anything. Steam will add VAT when you download, but it's still based on the dollar price so still a bargain.

After downloading the booster from EA-Link you can save the files into a dvd and if you have to reinstall it, next time you wont need to download again.

No CD/Box No purchase.
The Downloader does not exist on my computer.
If they put it into US retail stores, great! I will get a copy asap; and EA can count the dollars towards thier shareholders. If they restrict it to downloader only like they did with BF2's booster and addons they wont get any income in my home.
2142 is a nice game, worth an hour of mindless fragging a week. But not worth a credit card or dancing to some spyware's download button.

You cant put a booster pak on 10$ with box and manual....if people want box and manual then the booster pack probably will go from 10$ to 15$ or even 20$ and then a lot of people wont buy it....its simple. Anyway its better for you starting to use this new methods because soon near all will be downloaded from internet..its faster and cheaper.
now im sad that i cant get a hard copy

That may be so, but check the BF2 forums and you will find lots of pain among people who attempted to download and buy the add-on's boosters etc. Then the wave of those who wanted to burn a copy to disk for a variety of reasons. Even people who learned how the software worked and actually worked the system to thier advantage.
Finally check the early part of the 2142 forums regarding spyware, advertising etc etc... I think the Downloader is a part of that now. Most people will probably get it because they dont want to be left behind.
I personally feel that if money for a video game is too tight, my advice is to lay off the vices (Alcohol, Ciggerettes or other things) for a week or so and there will be plenty of money for a video game at whatever price.
Im sure the future will all be download only and factory direct online while stores like Best Buy fade into History never to be seen again. But at this point, the game must be on hard copy, in a box and have a decent price attached to it and availible at the store. Period.
If it's not? I will do without. I only play it a few hours if at all during the week and eventually I think QW:ET will consume alot of the summer 2007 gaming.

Packaging and shipping costs are huge. If they release a hard-copy and the price is the same as the DL, all those who download help pay for the hard-copy and that is not very reasonable.

That is exactly what they did with BF2142, the downloaded version was actually more expensive that the hardcopy.
But I would think that shipping and handling is more or less the same for a 50$ game and a 10$ booster pack, so it will be a much larger percentage of the total cost for a booster, which might make a hardcopy unlikely.

Your Dad sounds like a smart guy.
;)
Still, you should be able to walk into a bank and ask them about pre-paid credit cards. Since they are pre-paid, there are no age limitations on those things. As long as you have some money, you can put it on the card and do whatever the hell you want with it.
Just make sure they don't try to hit you with any service charges. Those banks are tricky SOBs (which is why your Dad is a smart fella... walking in on 'em and keeping 'em honest).

Studying MCom was worth it I guess, yeah, the pre paid ccredit cards havent come here yet.
But, usually I get what I ask for as long as my grades are fine (which they are for now :p) He'd probably ask someone else to buy it off the internet and pay him../her..
