..and I'm not talking about picking up the kits of dead soldiers.

I'm talking FIELD UPGRADES...think about it.

Field upgrades have allowed players to access unlocks without having to rank up...the same should apply here.

i think if you don't buy the booster pack, they prolly will not appear for you to unlock with field upgrades.
I personally am hopping that there will be a new slot (the pistol slot) that you can also customize so that the eng's can get a shotgun and recon can get a silenced phaser:)

that would be my guess, DICE is trying to sell something here and i think part of it is the 10 new unlocks, so it does not make sense to me for them to just "give" them to everyone. *barring them saying in the press release in the next hour or 2 that the BP is FREE :)

It is certainly technical possible, but it all depends on what DICE/EA wants, because the opposite is just as possible.
The system that prevents boostless from unlocking the top row may just as well prevent them from field upgrading it.

My guess is that you will be able to pick up and use unlocks, but unable to equip them at the spawn screen.

If they are going to be any good then everybody needs equal access to them or it would unbalance the game. If they are just sucky re-skin weapons or essentially pointless additions then it wont matter if just the booster pack people have them.

Exactly.

Everybody needs to have access. It won't be EQUAL access but at least it will be access.

This is much better than back in BF2 with Special Forces...your only option was the kit of a dead soldier.

The Field Upgrade system is a such nice addition to the franchise and this is just one example.

I wouldn't worry so much about "unbalancing" between the haves and have-nots.

If they do as good a job of balance as they have so far, the new stuff will be just that..."new". Not better, just different. Everybody will still need to make the same number of choices for their kit, so saying the new unlocks will give some unfair advantage is like saying the assault who takes the Baur, rockets and the shotgun attachment has an advantage over the assault who takes the Voss, rockets and the defib.

We'll really have to wait and see for the truth of it, but like I said, if they do as well as the initial offering, I don't think unbalancing problems will be our biggest concern by far.

10 new awards = 10 new ranks for the 10 new unlocks?

I really hope they don't bring out a G36E....

Ten new rewards, one new pin and ten new unlock items at the top of the unlocks trees, available also on core game maps, take persistence to new levels. Unlock credits earned in the booster pack can also be used in the core game.

Not awards, my guess is some sort of ranks.

In SF they were all L2 unlocks, so you had to get the L1 first. But they did double your unlocks points, so there was no disadvantage for veterans.

As for why making them wait for L5?
It is quite simple, its what they call a time sink in the MMORPG world. If you could get all the unlocks at once, you would get tired of them quickly and lose interest in the game.
This way we will be obsessed with unlocking the new toys, and be entertained (or at least occupied) for much longer.

They did not give equal access in bf2.. if i had all the boosters and SF.. i had access to alot more guns than someone that just had vanilla bf2.

I mean in general the unlock weapons have been worth it, except the ganz and the Saaw.
I mean if i go recon its lambert or zeller, assault VOSS time.. eng pilum.. and support is normally LMG but sometimes clark:) Are the unlocks strickly better than the standard weapons? No, they are generally different, and better at certain roles. Which is prolly what the new unlocks will be.

I definitely see your point but I have (on purpose) skipped many L4's based on my play and reviews of unlocks. So now I have to get xxxx pts to get my L4 for my secondary fav kits then the L5 (which may or may not be worth it).

Ultimately, I'll live and play on it will just force a rethinking of the unlock tree and unlock strategy.

Being able to unlock the new stuff via Field upgrades if you didnt buy the BP would screw the ones who DID pay for it. It WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!!!

Picking up a kit is a different story though. Thats the way it should be. You cheapoes who think you are entitled to free stuff need to wake up.

I myself think that those who DON'T buy it, shouldn't even have access to ANYTHING .... PERIOD! I don't spend my hard earned money to buy stuff so other freeloaders can use it without contributing squat. Paaleeeeeeeese!

I have about 5000 more points till BG & have pretty much all the unlocks I want for now. (not interested in sitting on my tush sniping.....Booooring!) Which will mean I will have 7 unused unlocks when the BP comes out.

5) There are ten new unlocks and also increased persistence in the booster pack. Could you give us some hints on what the new unlocks might be, and also how the increased persistence will work?

Rather than earning new unlocks by climbing through the ranks, the booster pack will add 10 new badges which when received will award the player with one unlock credit each. This unlock credit can be used to unlock a standard unlock item or, if you're on top of the unlock branch, a Northern Strike unlock. The Northern Strike unlocks will be available through Field Upgrade for all users who maxed out one or more unlock trees, but only players entitled to Northern Strike can unlock them permanently. A lot of energy has been put into making the unlocks a fun and challenging experience both for the ones carrying them and for the ones not.

Nah it just means you'd have to rank up normally to get the NS unlock. Chances are if you aren't a high rank and you get an unlock badge you'll have to unlock something below these new unlocks anyway.

As for the unlocks, no, according the info we have above, you don't have to pay to use them. As long as you don't mind waiting for a field unlock that'll disappear when you leave the server or picking up a kit from the ground that'll disappear as soon as you respawn. *shrug* Pay for 'em, on the other hand, and you can unlock them permanently.

Well, being able to play the maps requires having servers that RUN the maps. And given how well the previous booster packs did, I can only imagine how quickly the Nouthern Strike server count will drop as people stop wanting to play the same 3 maps over and over or the same two Titan maps over and over.

IF (big if) there are a lot of good servers running the booster pack maps, AND the booster packs are of such a good quality as to offset their very low quantity, then maybe it'll be worth it.

History is against this happening though. I haven't seen any server owners (on this forum) who've readily embraced this new Booster Pack. If things change and almost everyone decides that this is a great addition to the game and worth running on its own, then at that point I might start looking for the EA Link download.

To quote a server owner of a server I regularly play on after he heard the Booster Pack news:
Dammit.

Exactly.

Everybody needs to have access. It won't be EQUAL access but at least it will be access.

This is much better than back in BF2 with Special Forces...your only option was the kit of a dead soldier.

The Field Upgrade system is a such nice addition to the franchise and this is just one example.

Quoting you from the first page.

If only the people with the booster pack has access, meaning the kit cannot be picked up, that is a VERY unfair advantage.

It either has to be like the Special Forces of BF2, or act like a free patch, where EVERYONE can use it, as it will become compulsory, but the latter is not possible due to EA.

Field Upgrades for people WITHOUT Northern Strike is a very good idea, but they will lack the maps and bagdes and the pin. I feel this is a good idea (Or they restrict the field upgrades to only 1 per round, as i used to get all field upgrade points as a squad leader in a single round :))
In other words, they can only use 1 BF2142:NS weapon unlock every time they are on the server.

The Conquest Assault Lines also sounds amazing! No longer will we have to worry about that lone aircraft sneaking behind enemy lines to capture our main base. The end result of these matches will be as intense as the old "Hold the Line!!" in Karkand.

Can't wait...

Trueness. Here's hoping they found a way to better integrate the maps with the current set. Though I've never had too much trouble finding servers with the BF2 boosters running, even if they weren't all ranked. 'Course I haven't played BF2 since 2142 came out so I don't know what the landscape looks like today, but from the time of their release up to then, it wasn't particularly tough to find a good game with them.

They will need to release a new patch to include the unlocks in the core game (unless that was already done in 1.10, but I doubt that).

It would make sense to combine it with a fix-patch, since it seems to be two months away. 15th March is the date I have seen mentioned.

From what I interpret in the interview. The new unlocks will be available to all (thank christ, otherwise it would unbalance the game and make it crap). However, those without the booster pack can only use them as field/squad unlocks, and only then if they have the pre-requisite unlocks in each unlock tree. I guess it's about as fair as you can make it without giving it away for free.

That means that there'll no doubt be a patch at the same time so the non-booster players get access to the kit.

The rest of the stuff (ie new maps, and I guess access to some of the new badges which grant an unlock instead of points) will of course only be available if you have the booster, although I'm not sure about the new conquest mode.

I can't imagine the new unlocks to be to amazing as things are finely balanced at the moment. However, I'll be betting that a lot of them are rip off's from BF2:SF, like the zip line etc...

The last thing this game needs is an killer weapon like the G36 and those nasty flash bangs. Some kind of AP grenade would be nice though and maybe a different firearm for the engi (although I think the SMG is ace).

Sorry if this has already be brought up but...

Curious... If you can access a booster pack unlock via a fallen soldier, wouldnt the TK'ing increase dramatically ? I can easily see some player shooting his new gun and a teamie thinking I want to try that ...TK steal and viola new weapon to play with.

Not very nice thought....

Talus
01-20-2007, 12:59 PM
Yes, people did a bit of TKing once Special Forces was released for BF2...but that quickly died down.

Since an unlock you pick up with a fallen soldier's kit can only be used until you die...then a TK generally isn't worth it. But some curious folks disagree ;)

Since we have access via Field Upgrades for those who don't but the BP, then I can't see TKing being an issue at all!

mondo66
01-20-2007, 01:29 PM
I say no access unless you pickup a kit to the new unlocks. Myself, I had no problems with the SF/BF2 unlock system. Those that paid retail for it paid for the maps and unlocks that came with it and those in vanilla BF2 couldn't unlock them, fair because we paid for them. If they had made the 2 expansion packs the same way and they had new weapons I wanted I would have bought those also. Now since they can get the field upgrade without I think many will skip buying it if they are maxed out now and the upgrade ends up being the only thing they want. BTW, I don't want the have and have nots arguement if it is only $10.00, SF was $29.95. If you want the fun stuff lay off your smokes, colas, candy, movie rental, or what ever for a week or two to buy it.

Rogue Warrior

Yes they will be available as field unlocks, however, they will not be a permanent upgrade to your cache of weapons unless you own the BP.

ANSWER #5 ..............This unlock credit can be used to unlock a standard unlock item or, if you're on top of the unlock branch, a Northern Strike unlock. The Northern Strike unlocks will be available through Field Upgrade for all users who maxed out one or more unlock trees, but only players entitled to Northern Strike can unlock them permanently. Personally I would have preferred they didn't allow field unlocks, but included the maps as free instead (while maybe locking vanilla players out of the new vehicles). Different availability on maps fragments the playerbase, whereas you can just suck it up and do without when it comes to the unlocks. They can't make both free or else they don't have enough to actually sell in the booster.

I just don't see it happening.

But it is, they WILL be avalibile via field unlocks for EVERYONE. It's offical even.

I still think that the NS unlocks should stay the **** out of the ordinary game.
NS players will have advantages over normal players.
That is not what we payed for when we bought the ordinary game.
Those that have NS will have NEW, DIFFERENT equipment to choose from. Not necessarily BETTER equipment.

It's like saying the assault guy who kits the shotgun attachment AND the Rocket attachment has an advantage over the recon guy who kits the APMs and the Optical camo.

Yeah, but still, they have the option to unlock those, but others don't.

Well... yeah. They shelled out cash, so that is their benefit... unlock it and have it forever whenever they want it.

Somebody who doesn't pay for the booster isn't excluded from using the new unlocks, but they don't get to unlock them and have them forever whenever they want it. They'll have to get them with field unlocks or picking the kit up off a dead body.

It's about as fair as possible, don't you think?

Fair as possible would be every thing for free and no unlocks you just pick whatever you want. And no classes so I could have my morrieti on the assault kit with the rockets and motion mines....

That's a little... "pie in the sky"... don't you think? You're talking about a huge re-write of a fundamental portion of the game.

It's as fair as humanly possible considering the situation we're dealing with here in reality.

cant? Was that a typo?

Because currently you can get all unlocks (with the possible exception of the personals) as Field Upgrades.

But you can only upgrade one level, so you need to have everything below your desired Field Upgrade permanently unlocked.
