This is not a noob question!
Ok why is there fog in the game?
well its simple to make the game harder to snipe in and because the ea engine looks really crappy the further away you try to look.
But in reality there should be no fog. when you look up on a fog map you see the sky, alright i see the sky its blue or gray, well if its as foggy in real life you should not be able to see the sky at all.
take campG for instance:
The sky is blue and sunny. But how often is there fog when its very sunny out? and how is it that you cant see 10 feet in front of you?

I'm not sure if you know this, but fog and clouds are two different things. And you can have one without the other. And the reason they are in the game is because it is too strenuous on people's machines to render scenes indefinitely.

I heard that in the BF2 demo people turned the draw distance on their computers to 150 or something crazy like that.
just go to options and turn draw distance to 100% if you havn't already, although I assume you are exaggerating about the view distance being only 10 feet.
It could also be a snow/sand storm that is obscuring your vision if you prefer to hear a realistic explanation.

In short, there is fog to balance out the game. If you could see as far as you can on a normal day in real life while playing then you'd get sniped from halfway across the map.

ea engine looks really crappy
DICE made the engine and its called Refractor 2. The engine itself is buggy but far from looking like crap. Remember this is an online game not single player. SO there is a limit to what the DEVs can do graphics wise and still have everyone across the board get something playable. They could make every texture, every little odd graphic high resolution. But it would kick the hell out of even the higher end systems.
But in reality there should be no fog
Yeah this game is BASED on reality, it really isn't. The fog is in there, at varying degrees, to lessen the load on peoples machines. And on some maps you need fog so snipers can't kill you from like 500m away, it wouldn't be fair.

I think what he was getting at. is if you cannot see very far forwards in the fog.
You should not be able to see very far upwards. Unless the fog is.. amazingly low.
Also. as the maps do not follow the curvature of the earth. Zero fog would ultimatly. have endless views?

I wouldn't call it fog on Camp Gibraltar. To me its haze, which would make sense.

The right term is 'fog of war' It is used because otherwise your rig must do it's best to create textures for over 1000000000 feet. You will lag if this doesn't exist

Exactley what i was going to say about quake wars. The QW engine uses a mega texture system which eliminates fog and renders to the extent of the horizon. They use fog but only for balance/ on purpose. Another example of how QW will blow BF2142 out of the sky.

That said if this is a tweaked BF2 engine why was there no fog in Gulf of Oman, Wake island etc etc. they had huge view distances and managed to do without fog on an older engine?

Game companies add fog to help with the rendering of graphics while your playing. It keeps things unclear in the distance which makes it easier to run on lower end pc's. It is a cheap lil effect. Also, in most battlegrounds in history there is tons of smoke from all the gunfire.

For those of you who consider that fog can't possibly obscure a building unless it also obscures the sky.
