View Full Version : In game chat banter/ sportmanship - gone??

Have these kinda things died a death in the BF series? I didn't play BF1942 a great deal but I do know from others that there was a lot of good natured banter in the games and at the end of the game there were always a flurry of GG (Good Game/ well played) etc. This lessened a bit for BF2 but was certainly still there. However in 2142 I hardly ever see anyone trying to have a laugh while playing or the appearance of GG at the end of a round all it seems to be are abuse, whining and complaining towards other players (enemies and teammates alike). I expect there to be an element of 'clowns' who have learned new swear words and want to try them out in an attempt to look big and clever but in doing so fail miserably, but there are a lot of good folks out there playing too.I know the chat bit only allows for 3 lines and your chat can be gone quickly but is this the main reason or is it something else obvious? (no arguements about the state of society please ;))
Alot of the players randomly tk me (like i was shooting at a teammate PAST him to shoot a bianchi user and he used his parker to headshot me) and it drives me to anger, so if you saw me do it i apologize :(.

There are way too many messages rolling across the screen that are of little help. When I hit the "~" to try to go back and read something, it is barely readable. I played Black Hawk Down for quite awhile, and realize it was a whole different game, but we did a lot chat, and I got to know a lot of players real well. I miss that.

I always try to chat a bit when I'm playing but usually I don't' get any replies..
when I join a squad I always VOIP a "Hello" and a quick intro, ask what's up and ask for a squad strategy.. usually I get nothing in return...
Today I played a round where I heard nothing for 10 minutes.. When I finally got killed and spawned on my SL I shadowed him for another 10 minutes.. finally I asked "Hey SL! are on on VOIP? what's the plan here? Can you talk?" and the response I got was, "Yeh, I use VOIP, but I don't like to talk much. I can try..." and he never said a word after that...
I actually like to chat (game related) while I'm playing. usually it's to tell the squad member where I'm heading, what I see. etc.. but I find half the time the squads I join are so spread out that we can't use each others eyes anyway.
I know I've saved a few guys just by saying "I just got shot at from the east...there, spotted the guy on the second floor balcony of the lower building... Crap...I'm dead..."
There was another time I was playing with a really good communicating squad (of 4) and we were trying to take a flag. I was able to communicate exactly where I was (balcony) tell them I would provide cover fire from infantry on the West side, while two guys ran in the I spotted the sniper, drew his attention while a the same time telling the fourth guy exactly where the sniper was, and what direction he was moving in.. the 4th member of my squad moved in behind the sniper and knifed him. We all scored huge points that game..
Skilled, knowledgeable squad = friendly chat

Which is how i met some of the funnest and coolest players EVER, Di di mau, Corbindallas, KT! I can go on they are just a blasty blast to hang out with.

Make friends and play on servers with them. If you come across someone who uses VOIP give a buddy invite. Me and two of my better friends in the game usually have a talkative squad with a few random people that dominates everyone in teamwork. Also if you play (yes I know everyone suggests this) on the tactical gamer servers you get great squad work and plenty of chat. It's all about where you play and who you play with.
Yeah I've noticed this too and find it a bit of a shame. Often when I join a server I say "Evening All" or whatever but very very rarely get a reply. No matter what you say, people just don't seem interested in chatting. I suppose it doesn't help that there are so few text lines visible that your chats get swallowed up by the rubbish very quickly. Also, you can't chat at the end of the round at all, the round finishes and that's that.
it was very different for 1942, there was often a lot of chat going on, it was a generally friendlier game, less so for BF2.
I do find it a shame as you may as well be playing against a bunch of emotionless bots instead of people.

I remember when I used to play JK2: Outcast, it was like a huge chatroom where you can slice people up with your lightsaber. Everyone was generally friendly which was really cool, got to meet a lot of people from all around the world. Was kind of the same with Wolfenstien Enemy Territory too...friendly people that said GG and didn't get salty for loosing a round.
But I feel now, some of the BF series have some of the most immature players...accidental TK punishing when their dumb@ss running into my lane of fire, etc. then chatting to me a big "F.U.!" One time my squad leader on teamspeak gave me a sarcastic "thanks for reviving me and getting me killed again...no really thanks." I mean WTF...I am doing my job as assault/medic...didn't see the camper...
Another time on teamspeak again, some KID on my squad told me I was a "idiot" because, I did not notice he jumped out of a walker because I was busy covering the 6 trying to kill someone. I ended up getting a pilum and he started ranting on me from there....
blah...whatevers, its only a game.

Yeah that's the problem with multiplayer games. Other people.

I think it's largely a problem with the chat interface.
Things scroll by so damned fast you hardly get a chance to read anything before it's scrolled off the top. Hell, most of the time I can't even get a chance to read what it was that killed me!
That said, I've found a lot of friendly voice banter going on. It's common for me to be involved in squads that get the job done and still have time for humor.

what wargimp said, all the inange crap in the text chat box, plus the fact that the game doesnt let you type at the end of a match, just during it, which is hard...
People would speak more if the messages didnt' scroll so fast, frag-out is the only message i ever see....

I think I only ever type anything in chat when I kill a guy and he kills me at the exact same moment. Usually an "lol", because I love it when that happens. :D

What I've found is that there are three different kinds of players:
1) The kind who like to communicate. Both talk and listen.
2) The kind who can listen but don't actually say anything back.
3) The kind who dont understand any language of any kind, lack basic common sense and see no difference between the enemy and you.
Yesterday I was a SL and I had a whole squad of number 2's. They never said a word. BUT, they listened to everything I had to say, they moved well, they helped each other but someone all this was done while not uttering a word.
But kudos to them. I think sometimes even just having a SL giving a little support and moral just saying "Good job, guys" and such can really give a boost in performance.

Yeah, that always feels good when you get squads like that but I always find it a little weird when no one says a single word throughout the entire round.

I see a lot of great players out there. Some games you run into jerks but most of the time the players are cool.

BF2/BF2142 has a very crappy chat system. After you type something, It'll take 3-4 seconds before it's gone out of the console. They need to make separate windows for chat and radio.
At first when I started playing BF2142 (I got bored of BF2 and left, then started playing CSS and other Steam games) I always typed "gg" at the end, but since I was the only one, I stopped doing that.

if i ever get killed in a spectacular fashion by a member of the opposing team, or i do something unbelievably stupid (like run into the smae guys apms one after another) i cannot resist the urge to type "lol nice one" or "oops :|" respectively. I rarely if ever get a reply, i used to play eve-online, and i miss the comradeship tbh, but this game is much better on a whole

I typically don't say "gg" unless it's a match (totally off-topic) or it's a close game. Sometimes people take "gg" as a kind of insult when you beat them real bad so I just keep my mouth shut. However, if the game comes down to a difference of 10 tickets or so then I definitely try to say "gg" or something to that effect before time runs out.

In BF1942 you where able to see the scoreboard, type and get coffee at the end of the round, why exactly do we now need to wait for the next round to do so.
... well ... at least the coffee feature still works ;)
Edit: anyone noticed that everytime you got a second (dead/round end) all the useful UI elements disappear ... no Squad Member/Leader indicator, no Titan shield status, no silo status ... >_>
