I don't know much about the state of video cards these days, and I was wondering what is the best video card out there today or coming soon, irrespective of price (like no what is the best bang for the buck or anything like that.) Just what is the most kickass video card right now?

The new Radeon HDs and 8800GTX chipsets out on the market can outmuscle anything, and are worth pretty much two of anything else. They are the best ones out there if you don't mind shelling out a large amount of your country's currency for them :)
They are also the best among the handful of cards out there with DX10 support, which will likely become a necessity in 3-6 months.
8800 GTX, ultra is just super high clocks.

8800 GTX, ultra is just super high clocks.
Which makes it the best card..
BTW Thread starter: You could easily have figured this out by visiting a web page selling or testing writing about hardware. Not much reason in making a post asking

I disagree - this is a point of contention among some of us. I prefer the Radeon sets over the 8800s because they are quieter, cooler and run their memory and clocks more efficiently than the 8800s. The NVidias are essentially tanks, that often necessitate buying new PSUs to support. They are bulky, hot, massive, loud and obnoxious. I prefer the Radeons myself due to their extraordinary efficiency and superior support.
In addition, I have had MUCH fewer instances of failure, overheating or driver issues with ATI than I have had with NVidia. The negligible drop off in power (look at some benchmarks, they are closer than you think) is more than made up for by these other factors in my opinion.

I got 8800 GTS OC'ed to 640/1950 stock cooling.
I can play bf2142 at max settings in a 64 players maps at an average 30fps while there are lots of things going on screen (players/vehicles/effects).
GTX Ultra is the king of video cards but is too expensive.

I prefer Nvidia myself, but I have computers with both brands in them. I think your assesment is pretty spot-on, though.... ATI seems to achieve through careful design what Nvidia does with brute force. End result is pretty much the same. I think overall support is about the same, never had problems with drivers or anything like that.

Nvdia are better graphics card makers.
The 8800 GTX or Ultra is the best card on the market atm.

Just be sure you don't buy a Vid Card that is beyond your CPU's ability to handle - with the new cards out today, you can easily spend $$$ on a card but find your graphics speed is bottlenecked by your CPU. Do your research carefully. Remember that the DX 10 cards will come down in price after the CES, and again as we near the Xmas buying season and newer models arrive. Also remember you do not really NEED one of these cards yet, no games requiring DX10 only exist yet to my knowledge; keep an eye on the 7900 and 7950 (and their ATI counterparts) as they will drop steeply in price as the new DX10 cards come to market. Remember the eVGA Trade-Up deal, buy an eVGA card and if you upgrade within 90 days (and you registered your original purchase with them_) you pay only the price difference between cards. Finally, how much is too much? If you play BF games at ultra-high settings they look great, but to the people playing against you at mediocre settings, you will be perfectly easy to spot because a lot of the foliage, effects, etc., that YOU think are hiding you are turned off for your opponents.... I suppose that all this practical advice could be missing the crux of the question for many: Must have latest/greatest regardless of $ or whether I really need it. LOL, I will limp along on my eVGA 7950 KO Superclocked, then upgrade to a DX10 card in a year or so - and pay 1/3 to 1/2 what you "early adopters" have paid, saving enough to buy a new CPU and MOBO in the process. ;-D

Oh, and since everyone here is pretty much in the habit of stating what they have - I'm currently running on an ATI Radeon X1950XTX that gets beautiful results from any game on the market. Will be updating within 2-3 months to a high end DX10 card.

I run an ATI X1900XTX in-game @ 1680X1050 w. no lag, tearing or pixel corruption and everything maxed out. It really depends on your req's (OP) and what you want to use it for.
I have been bitten twice in the past 5 years by the biggest baddest bug. I bought a $550+ card twice only to see it outdated within 6 months. I have learned the hard way to be patient and let things normalize before I jump on the bandwagon. I will be waiting until Dec-Jan before I step up and grab another card myself.

I disagree with Diamond about the new Radeons. They have huge power consumption needs and are excessively hot... all the review sites have been discussing this.
I think best bang for the buck is on 8800GTS and the best bargain is 8600GTS. Performance winner is 8800GTX Ultra.
This comes from a long time Radeon fanboy, but I'm now sporting a new 8600GTS and I love it! :yay:

I am running a C2D X6800 Extreme w. 4GB and want to bump for DX10. Although just having a DX10 game on the market does not mean much, because the game itself might not be something I want to play when it finally does come out. It's all up in the air.
