For me, due my primary language, will sound Bah - uh - r (all at once).

Something like an anime character name...

Micster

Bow - er.

Not so much "w" though, like Bah.

At least that's how I say it.

Ugh, very complicating.

Right i have figured it.

I say it

Bah-wer

Rhymes with Power

Power of the Baur

I say it like "bar" but the "a" has a more "awe" sound to it: "bôhttp://www.yourdictionary.com/images/ahd/gif/lprime.gifr". Say "au naturel" [in the natural (nude)]. Another example of the "a" sound would be to say "all", just remove the two L's and you get an "awe" sound without the W. So it almost feels like you're saying "baw-er" but without the W sound.

I pronounce it as "Burr".

Because it's a Burr in the butt to control in burst mode!

Errr...Baur.

Yeah... I mean, say it how it is spelt.

Damn, I mean, does this HAVE to be in the main discussion, the opinion does change, and so does the pronounciation... but... damn.

Baur... Jack Baur... How can there be any different way of saying it?

I guess it sounds like "Baw-ah".

m3talc0re do you mean you say "Bor-err"?

I'm sorry, but if you can't figure it out after the explanation I gave, then there's no other way to put it. Just say Bar with a slightly more pronounced "ah" sound. Kinda like "bah-er" but shorter...

RichardDawkins
06-10-2007, 12:38 AM
only phonetics could solve this one, you can't account for how anyone is saying their words unless you rhyme in a known language...

i always thought it was like jack bauer. where does it come from? i mean, it could sound like the french name 'laure' for all i know, 'bore' in english

I'm pretty certain we pronounce that differently, so that was why I tried to explain it in a different way. Bar with more 'ah' would just be 'Baah' (bar as in drinking bar or crossbar, crowbar, if that isn't the kind of bar you mean then tell me which one is), and I am certain that isn't what you are looking for.

When I say 'Bor-err' it is bor as in 'bore' but leave out the 'e' (smoothbore) and err as in "to err on the side of caution".

I think of it as Bore.

Maybe it's just my aussie accent.

Bore for me too, it sounds as though it bores into the enemy :)

bow-wer sounds tacky. Reminds me of Jack with his little pistol

If it weren't pronounced "Bow-wer" would couldn't say "Baur power/Bower paur," etc. I say that everyone agree on "bow-wer" since it rhymes so excellently with power, flower, shower, hour, sour, tower, etc. Think of all the slogans we could come up with...

That'd be "boar" as in the swine type of animal. Bore is a verb and it is what is happening to me right now.

I pronounce it about halfway between BOW-wer and Bore, with a little of both entering into the pronunciation.

Regardless of what you call it, it's a beast in trained, patient hands.

By the way, off-topic question: When does Jack Bauer use the bathroom? It's been, what six seasons (days) now in real time...is this not an issue of continuity?

I read somewhere that baur and Voss were two german generals.
Is there any German in tha House to elucidate how we say this name?

Diamond621
06-11-2007, 06:34 PM
Hitler's personal pilot was named General Hans Baur, but this is about all the reference I can find to the name. They certainly wouldn't name a modified SCAR 11 (that makes it presumably an amalgamation of U.S. and NATO-related arms manufacturers. They wouldn't use a Nazi name) after him 200 years later. It'd be like the U.S. naming a new model of tank after a secretary at the Kremlin.

Kraxis
06-11-2007, 08:13 PM
Well, it doesn't really have to be an general that has lived... They might very well be future generals.

But in German Baur is indeed Baw-ah/Bow-er/whatever in that line. And Voss would be Foss if it is a German name, but I won't be using that at least.

Well as has already been pointed out Baur is a German Surname (this would make it rhyme with Tower).

Interestingly there was a German Theologist by the name of Ferdinand Christian Baur who had a son-in-law who was a philosopher named Eduard Zeller!
