How long has this game been out now anyways? Is there any chance of something being done with the ridicules communications system?
I mean this game is so great in many ways. And it has a great potential for teamplay, but that's it...

This must be the first game I've played where typing something to your team mates or taunting the other team is impossible. If you type something, the message will be shown with very small letters, for a brief moment, up in the corner together with all the radio spam. This also applies for commanders, who after all are suppose to command people around? What the heck??
It's also impossible to type stuff to your team before and after the rounds. Before the round is when people lay plans, and after the round is when you say GG, and call the other team hackers. This is maybe the most important part of creating a good community around a game.

This game also has an ingame microphone system. First of all, it seems to me like 50% of the players don't hear what I say, and almost no one ever dears to speak. Also, for some reason, the speech system is created in a way that commanders can talk to squad leaders, and other people can only talk to people in their own squad. This system may have worked well in the mafia, but this is a battlefield for crying out loud!

Also, the commander himself, unique for this game (?), why can't he really give orders people?? He can order the squads to upload an arrow to their map, and talk to the squad leaders over the voice system. And that's it. He can not in any way communicate with unassigned people, explain strategies, order out specific tasks or request classes, set up routes or tell people to go defensive or offensive etc... basically everything a commander should do.

Why do I even bother to post this? I know the subject has been brought up before, but not enough times. People kept on whining about APMs, and they got nerfed in a patch. Please whine about this too !

Okay, here's some of the problems with the whole communications system with this game.

1. EA is pushing for a more EU gamer market. That's fine, except that the game is being played mostly by English speakers, and there's no universal language to bridge all players. Folks will not use VOIP, TS or Vent in pubs when their understanding and ability to speak a language isn't upto par. Because of this, this will limit the use of voice communication in the game alone.

2. Mic issues. Those with USB or just plain plugin-to-audio-card mics have trouble getting it to work ingame (auto shuts off).

3. Those concerned how talking on a pub will be received (especially women who play -- and there's more than 1 or 2) since there's too many 15 year-old ePeen boys around. One of the first games I played, the team was saying the enemy was going to lose, because they had a couple women on their team. No one needs that junk.

4. VOIP tends to attract talkers who spend their whole freaking time chattering like women after the latest gossip after church. They're so busy talking about everything but objectives, their teammates get killed because they can't hear the hiss of a grenade or a cloaked Recon.

I also wish the in-game chat system was more robust and not a so focused on audio chat over VOIP. Frequently it's inconvienent for me to speak as I'm a dad playing in the living room with my family around me.

This is the only way being a gamer works for me: I can still be attentive to my family and be near them. Much of the time when there is chat going on the immature folks are screaming and swearing. That get's me killed and I've just not been talking or staying in squads with all the auditory distractions.

Don't get the point that I don't VOIP, I just keep it to movement orders, enemy sightings or encouraging words. I'd do more texting if my messages were displayed long enough to be read. I had to repeat a short 6 word message 4 times today for the other person to be able to read it. It's fortunate I was able to pull the APC over and not be attacked...

In-game chat needs big improvement on. BF2 and BF2142 lack the ability to successfully communicate through it, especially in larger servers (64 man)

VOIP issue. UNATCOII couldn't said it any better.

"2. Mic issues. Those with USB or just plain plugin-to-audio-card mics have trouble getting it to work ingame (auto shuts off)."

EXACTLY my issue.

Or in one server, the most foul gansta rap.

There should be a penalty, like Commanders get for excessive spotting (yep, I'm VERY guilty), that forces the channel to remain talk free for 30 seconds after in use for more than 30 seconds.

Want to chat? Use TS or Vent. But ingame folks want to know where the enemy is and what he's doing, not dying to hear some bozo's latest joke, or his awful taste in music.

If people around you could hear your VOIP that would be good. The same as people near you can hear your troops comments!
