View Full Version : Uses of the IPS(support kit) Shield

So many people have blasted the IPS shield (the red shield which a support can unlock) for being useless and bright. As Support you have many great unlocks to choose from, which may be why i seldom see the red shield in the battlefield, but i think the shield has potential to be a great tool if used right.
Understand that the shield is NOT an invincible shield like the titan forcefield. The shield's control box can be sniped, and it is glowing brightly which makes it a "shoot me" sign. it also invited grenades and rockets your way, too. But using it to shield yourself is not the best way to use it imo.
Firstly, the shield is GREAT as a portable barrier. I'm sure we are all familiar with shields used to block the titan corridors/vents. indeed there ARE ways to cross the barricade, but it provides a good opportunity (especially in the vents) to bounce a grenade into the cordoned-off areas to kill the enemy soldier while he gets round the shield.
but that's not the only application. when the titan hull is about to be destroyed, people start jumping off from the gaps on both sides of the cargo bay. i love to put a sentry gun in one of those exits, and use a shield to block the other. then i camp behind the crates near the place where i place my shield and shotgun those who try to manuveur round my shield =D
the shield can be used similarly in conquest too to block of chokepoints. it won't last the whole round, but delaying the enemy progress is crucial in many maps (especially camp g), and you've got an endless supply of shields so why fear? (: examples i can think of would be the small side entrance into Ruins for Camp G, and the numerous "doorways" and building corridors in city maps like belgrade/FoB.
Then you can always exploit the "shoot me" signal it invariably tells others. when defending a place, put the shield in a conspicuous location near some cover, ie beside a wall. then hide somewhere else. enemies who zip by will see the shield and their attention will be on that shield while you gun them down from another direction.
<strikeout>or you can deploy one beside a frendly sniper who's annoying you so other snipers can find him more easily</strikeout>
i can think of more uses but im not too sure if they'll work. ie will putting a shield in the middle of a road block incoming vehicles/damage them?
anyway if you know more uses do contribute =D

i see a lot of people putting them on the top of the ladders in buildings and towers as it stops the enemy from being able to access the next level thus providing a safe haven for the witty support guy......i know this as i have sneakily gone to go knife em only to be denied by the red wall of death lol!

oh damn that is smart. never thought of that lol.
you mean they can't even get up from the ladder to stand and shoot? hmm i smell cries of HAX! lol

Although putting a shield on top of a ladder blocks it off for your team too. WHy not put a sentry gun there? killing>blocking

This all makes sense, great guide.
I remember the last time a shield was used tactically against me.
You guys know those buildings with the 2 stairs on the long sides? There was a support on the top and as I climbed up to shoot him, I see a shield just around the corner right next to him. As I'm lower than him, when I opened fire, the shield ate all my bullets, and as such he picked me of easy.

B/c anyone on their toes will see it and sprint past it, or quickly duck back down and start tossing 'nades up there. Yes, still keeps you from getting cut, but I rarely get a kill when it's on a ladder like that.
Better placement fpr the "ladder kill", if you can, it somewhere it's hidden and can shoot the noobster in the back as he's climbing.

The gun might not be as useful as the shield on places like the 1st EU flag on Fall of Berlin, but it works wonders in those bunkers where you can put the gun behind the ladder. And even if the enemy sprints past it, you'll hear the beeping of the gun and it'll also put the enemy on the minimap.

yes, but the sentry draws attention and a hailstorm of bullets/grenades to destroy it. a shield, however, takes more time to destroy since it is quite indestructible from the front from conventional weapons.
perhaps it is my sniping skills which suck, but i have yet to successfully deactivate an enemy IPS by sniping at the exposed part of the control box. neither have i seen one destroyed in that manner, tbh.

Why not put a sentry gun behind the shield?

uH, 'cause it couldn't shoot through the shield and can actually kill your shield eventuall? Shields only absorb so many bullets. Also, you do NOT, to my knowledge, have an "unlimited supply" of shields. I think it's 3, isn't it?

You're support. You have unlimited everything.

Why not put a sentry gun behind the shield?
i havent tried it, but iirc the shield blocks the gun somewhat. I'd be glad for confirmation, though.

nope, its not gonna even fire if the shield is in the way. like i said im not sure of that tho.
you have ONE shield to deploy, but you have an ammo box =D
max is 1 deployed and 1 in inventory. if you deploy another the first one will explode.

Not true, you have only 3 sentry guns, I think, before you run out. Same for shields if I'm not mistaken. Then again, I frequently am.

I'm pretty sure you are only capable of placing one Sentry Gun and one Shield before having to resupply another.
Wizrdwarts
06-22-2007, 01:19 AM
No, you can lay down as many as you want as long you resupply yourself, though you can only have one turret/shield down at a time, the old one blows up after you put a new one down.

Actually, multiple times I have seen a sentry gun shooting from behind a shield. Each time I got killed by the sentry gun.

hmmm protection for a sentry gun... not a bad idea... but how much does the sentry gun stick out? if the whole turret of the gun is visible there's not much point in the shield, since a half-decent soldier should be able to shoot the turret...

The shield is useful and has helped save my life and other squadmates countless times. If you get shot, well that's okay as if theres's a medic ready the shield will provide good heavy cover.

I haven't tried this myself, but someone else told me, instead of dropping the IPS in front of you, go to where you want to place it, then do a 180 turn. When you drop it like that I hear more of the control box is behind the shield, and therefore takes many more hits to destroy it.
Anyone try this, or have results to confirm or debunk this thought?

I have one. I found out that the clark rdx can go through the shield.
Bad in that enemies can kill you
Good in that now you can fire clark rdx shots while under cover

yeah if you put a sentry on one of the routes to the center flag in camp G., and the IPS in the other, then the PAC have to dismount to get the flag as the cars take damage or stop/flip if they hit one.
i have benn embarrased before by that; one time i was going down there, tried to squish a sentry, and ended up flipping and driving into a MM!

so the IPS/sentry can withstand a car crash? wonderful news =P

Try jumping on shields to get to the vents from the cargo bay area.

Ok check this out, I made a ghetto picture of a titan corrider's "rib" thing, now all you have to do is place the Shield like I have in the picture, and you have a small window to shoot out of.

er truth be told, i can't really understand... does the shield block off more of the opening so it's harder for the defenders to shoot back? It's still easy for PK rockets to hit you, though

if you place a shield near the entrance in a titan corridor the attackers thinks that u are stupid. but if you place it right they only have problems with it: the shield blocks their way so they need to walk stop turn and run. then u have time to place a nade above the shield against the wall. the nade will jump back but its path is blocked with the shield. then u place the nade alwais in front of the attackers and the can't flee easy.

I only use it in the Titan, or to block off ladders. Lately I have fallen in love with the Clark whilst inside the Titan though, so I tend to take my Trusty Clark-12 RDX + Clark 15B + IDS. Try dropping it on a staircase(like the big one at Carebere Landing Command Center) ;) It kinda falls into the stair so you can't see it, and it is funny as heck to watch the enemy run halfway up that ladder and then sit there like "What the... Why am I not moving anymore?" :p
I'm gonna see if it damages vehicles now, I'll edit this post when finished.
EDIT:
It does no damage to vehicles whatsoever, and when it is hit, it just explodes. Even when a FAV parked with its nose touching the shield starts moving, it goes pop.
