Everything else on my computer is alright for running BF2, but I just needed an opinion on which video card to get. I am looking to run the game at medium/high settings, and on 64 player servers. My choices are:
ATi Radeon x700 Pro 256mb
Nvidia GeForce 6600 256mb
ATi Radeon 9550 256mb
Thanks for replying.

a 256mb 9600 XT

X700pro is best of those you have chosen there.. But the 6600GT is better and it costs around the same of X700pro i think!

Hello there, I have just ordered a computer from Tiger Direct and was wondering if this new system will be able to run BF2. The specs on it are:
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
1GB DDR (512 x 2)
ATI Radeon 9550 256MB
umm...so...maybe high? I know that shooting for max is DEFINITELY a long shot, but I'm hoping that it will be able to, at least, run on high.
Help...

Your ram is the only thing thats going to keep you from getting high. With 512 your looking at around medium....and no 64 player games....

Sure, no problem. The computer won't be in for a few days, though--sorry. But when it comes in and everything gets tested out all nice and sweetly, I'll post it. As NAA said: I'm probably looking at medium graphics if I plan to play a 64 player server. But, hey, at least I can play with all of them numbers, right--AND not be on low. :D So I am happy.

I was checking out the Low/Med/High quality images on the BF2 guide on www.tweakguides.com, and the differences between medium settings and high setting is seriously almost non-existant. But yeah, i won't have the money for my video card till my next paycheck in a couple of weeks, so take your time gettin the system set-up and stuff, and i'll be here waitin :) Thanks a lot.

Did you try turning the settings down to low? If it runs on low smoothly, then that means the 9550 is not capable of running it on medium.

My system:
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (2Ghz)
Board: ASRock K7S8X R3.0
RAM: 1x 512 MB DDR-RAM (400Mhz), 1x 512 MB DDR-RAM (266Mhz) = 1 GB @ 266Mhz
Graphic: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128 MB) - Latest Omega Drivers
I'm running the game @ 800x600 and all details low with 35 - 55 fps (no action) and 20 - 33 with actions!
Do you think that's ok for the system? I somehow think it could do a little more but I don't know what's wrong, really...

$2200, But I get mail in rebates that lower it to alittle over $1700. I have worked alot of overtime hours, 60 hour weeks for several months straight. During that time I saved up enough money to buy a killer system. At the time I ordered it the 7800 Nvidia was like $70 more that the 6800 GT when included in the system. I'm glad I waited a couple weeks till the 7800 came out. ;)

Pentium 4 3.4 Ghz
1.0 GB RAM
80GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon X700 256 MB card
Now when I play the game I'm still having problems with a little bit of choppiness. Can anybody direct me to a link or give me some basic settings to change so that the game will run as it should be able to?

I have recently downloaded the Battlefield 2 demo, and was wondering what performance to expect.
My specs: 6800 GT 256 MB, 512 RAM, AMD 64 3000+. What should my video options be set to? High, medium, low....What resolution should a REALsync 17 inch LCD monitor get? Should I put anti-aliasing on?
I may upgrade and add another 512 stick to my computer, but for now, that is what I will play with. Any help would be great.

You should run the game no problem. Keep the lighting settings on low/med. Everything else med to high. You will do much better with the ram upgrade. In fact I would say the ram is a must.

Everything is on high, minus lighting (medium). I may turn a few other things down to make it run a little smoother.
I'm not sure how to check fps gain on BF2, but my game runs very smooth! However, I may try the catalyst drivers just because every now and then all of a sudden areas of the map turn black, sometimes all graphics turn black and I have to restart the game. I just never updated the catalyst drivers, I used to ones that came with the card and just upgraded to the Omega.

I would go with the PCI-E version, because AGP is gradually becomming extinct. Furthermore the 6600GT has a slight edge in speed over the plain vanillia 6600.

There's been tests run on BF2 with 1G & 2G of RAM and the difference is very minimal.
Plus you've already got a 256 card as well.
I'd wait till the 03 patch anyway as it says better client/server performance.

Hmm...has anyone considered getting better quality RAM?
PC3200 is pretty slow considering PC5300 (DDR2-667) is available.
However, it never hurts to have too much RAM...just as long as it is good quality RAM :)

yep ^^ wot spyro said^^
plus the tests run were run with good quality ram.
My m8 who is quite an IT guru even tried it himself and came to the same conclusion.
1G ram + 256Mb on ur card is certainly all u need.
If u've already got ^^ u can put in another gig if u wanna but don't expect it to magically fix ur stuttering problems.

hi im new here, just been looking for some bf2 support forums, no official ones that i can see, anyways onto my problem...
i just built a machine...
amd 64 3000+
gig of pc3200 (some was salvaged from another machine so it aint dual channel mode)
gigabyte 256 nvidia 7800 gtx
gigabyte nforce 4 ultra mobo (GA-K8N Ultra-9)
i can whack all the settings up to max, also max resolution for moni is 1280x1024,(no AA max AF) it seems to run smoothly, but once in a while it seems to "jump" i thought it may be my ping but this is usually around 30- 50,
i built this machine specifically to run bf2, i was planning on some nice ocz pc-4400 ram so i can OC my cpu to 2.2ghz (amd 64 3500+ speeds)
is it my ram failing me, or do i have some gfx settings mixed up?
any suggestions?
thanks :)
geddeth
07-25-2005, 01:39 PM
Think you're gonna have to be more specific on the symptoms there, pal .. how does the jumping manifest itself? Does it skip a couple of frames, freeze for a sec, what?
Nomad2k3
07-25-2005, 02:20 PM
it actually seems to skip a frame every once in a while, sort of,1 frame every few seconds, it also seems to be quite regular, not when theres a lot on screen or anything, but rather like its perhaps having to feed data from the hdd or something but gives the impression of a mini lag jump, or small stutter, im thinking now its maybe the actual game as a few other forums have reported similar problems, they all say it may be addressed in the 1.3 patch.
its not a great problem, just ive paid out over £700 and thought it would be able to handle this game fairly easily.
Nomad2k3
07-25-2005, 02:23 PM
also i forgot to add, is it has a stable fps of around 45 - 50 in fraps and when the stutter happens it the fps remains the same, it dosent drop, if thats any help to you.
Nomad2k3
07-25-2005, 08:25 PM

The processor and the RAM seem a little too low for the game. Bottlenecking would also occur because of the video card and the CPU.

Yeah M processors are different..so maybe it is just fine. I'm not sure tough.
So it could be possible that there aren't any problems between the cpu and vid card..

P4 3.0Ghz
1 Gig ram
XFx geforce 6600 GT.
After reading alot of reviews the 6600GT can easily run at around 50 FPS on medium settings @ 1280x960, best of the mid range cards, so dont worry about it being a 128 card :D.
As fro the CPU, apparently BF2 isnt very dependant on CPU speed, in the same review the differance between a 2.8 and 3.8 processor was a few FPS

Hi guys, new to the thread here^^
Just ran the demo w/Fraps running and this is what I got:
First my system:
Athlon 64 3500+ 939 (overclocked to 2.38 ghz)
Sapphire Radeon 9800XT (overclocked to bout 421 mhz)
Corsair XMS Dual-Channel sticks 512x2 DDR 433
SoundBlaster Audigy Gamer
WD SATA drives x 2 in RAID 0
and bunch of other stuff crammed inside a Thermaltake Tsunami mid-tower
(need to upgrade my mobo and get some PCI Xpress cards in sli...; ;)
ok now that I got that out of the way....
Demo running on all High netted me between 28-41 fps
Demo running on Med. netted me 37-50 fps
That's what I got I guess I'll need to tweak around some but for info. purposes thought I might throw that out there^^
9.1 of 10. to mutch over clocking, VERY HOT! make it cooler and ger .3% more.

I somehow think it could do a little more but I don't know what's wrong, really...

my setup:
ASUS A7n8X-X mobo
AMD AthlonXP 2600+
1GB PC3200
Ati Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
Game seems to run okay with everything on medium (except for the occasional lockup)
Is it worth upgrading the vid card to something like an X800XL 256 AGP?
or upping the CPU to XP 3000+?
are either of these upgrades going to give much bang for the buck?
Or should I just save my pennies, run this setup and go to a new mobo, Athlon64, and PCI-E card in like a year?
5.1 of 10, just good enuff.

Soundmax Integrated Audio soundcard
Now I know that upgraded your memory would help and also be the cheepest way to go you have to rember that you have a Video Card that runs at 128MB
Get this upgraded too some time, for now just do a nother 512MB and you will see loading times faster and less lagg. I think you just barly put it on high
Nice MOBO tho. Cant that one go up to 4BG of ram? Every pay check get you self 512MB of ram you should have 2GB then if you have 4 slots. Or better yet
go with a better GPU a.k.a Video card @ 256MB and it will kick *** then, well with 1024MB of ram.
So Yea go for the 1024 for now and later get thishttp://www.amamax.com/innvge668xag1.html

For the record I own BF2. I expected better performance after upgrading my video card, but I'm wondering if I'm really getting hurt by my CPU power, my mobo can handle an upgrade max to 2.6 ghz so I am wondering if that will help a lot? I'd just wanna be able to enjoy 30+ fps on even all low if needed, as of right now all settings on low @ 800x600 I experience 10-25 fps on 64 player servers...
Pentium 4 1.6 ghz (yes... I know)
1 GB RAM
Geforce 6600GT 128 MB AGP
I really thought I'd get at least all low with 30-45 fps... should I be getting better? *sigh*

Ohhh YEAH a NEW CPU! you bet!
performenace like a MOFO! Thats like a hart trans plant for some one who has had a Hart attack, asking if thay will have more energy :) The Dr. would think your joking asking something like that.
I'm not downing you! ;) I'm Just saying.
Only overclock:
(1). IF: you have a bad *** cooling fan!
(2). IF: you havd money set aside for a New and better CPU.
(3). IF: you do not care about that CPU OR MOBO.
(4). Note: If you want to Reset you Bio's, afterover clocking and you don't like you settings, then Pull out your battery on your mobo. This will put your bios back at it's Defult settings, Thus taking off the overclocking. :D

No I don't think so. The reason is quite simple. 1GB ram isn't enough. Unless the new patch fixes this (which I doubt) you will experience a lot of harddrive access while you play on most maps. I run all settings on medium except antialiasing on 2x, texture filtering on high and 100% view distance. If I go high on any other settings I experience harddrive access while playing. My rig is GF 6800Ultra, 2x512MB PC 3200, Athlon 64 3200+ socket 939 and Audigy2 sound card. I also run sound on hardware - medium and EAX enabled. Well I would guess your memory configuration plays a part in your problem, it's not a good idea to have a 3rd memory stick in a dual channel system. Pull that out and I'm shure it will run better.

Hey everyone, right now I'm running a system that was decent when I first built it 3 years ago, but i can see a perfomance drop with these newer games coming out (Hl2, and bf2 definitly). I have:
2ghz P4 w. 400mhz FSB
1gb Ram DDR266
ATI Radeon X800 256mb
AGP 4x slot
I invested in a good AGP card recently before i heard about PCI-xpress, and was sthinkin of gettin a new motherboard and processor so I can run my X800 at 8x and get an AMD 64 Processor. Also faster and more RAM.
Would I be fine with going AGP or should I invest in PCI-Express.
Thanks for any input.

I recommend all settings on medium except antialiasing 2x, texture filtering on high, view distance 100%. If the performance isn't good enough for those settings then make shure your memory is running in dual mode. Use Sisoft Sandra 2005 Lite and do the memory bandwidth test. You should get about 5500MB/sec. Try running sound on hardware/software and medium quality.

Can my computer run Battlefield 2 easily? And with which settings?
Intel 2.66 GHz
1024 mb ram
nVidia 6600GT (128 mb)
I'm thinking of buying the game, I saw the game at a friend, and I just fell in love :p, but I need to know how my computer will run the game.
Thank you! :)

You will see a considerable reduction in lag if you go with 2.0 gigs of ram.
Hey im getting a new CP and i want to know if any1 can give me an esimate on what u think my FPS would be, im getting SLI 7800 GT, athlon 3800x2 1 gig of ram.

So far with the following:
2 GB Ram (taskmanager process reads 1,127 for bf2.exe)
3.06 GHz XEON
NVidia GeForce 6800 GT OC 256 MB Ram
Soundmax Audio (blows, I am upgrading to soundblaster X-Fi as soon as it ships, probably the Fatal1ty version)
7,200 rpm western digital 120gb hd
Verizon FIOS fiber connection 15 MB down and 2 MB up (actually 1.89 mb up)
Dual Boot Windows XP Pro SP2 / Vista
Everything runs absolutely smooth but sound quality is poor and depending on setting affects my video quality. I will upgrade to soundblaster x-fi which I expect will help me greatly. I expect BF2 will take advantage of the 64 MB or so dedicated audio RAM on the sound card to offload cycles from other components. Plus playing in 7.1 surround with EAX HD 5.0 will be an advantage I am sure for knowing where those footsteps/gunshots are coming from.
Question: it takes me a long time to load each level map ... status bar takes up to a minute. How can I increase this performace?

Free up some space on your harddrive and do a defrag. Your graphic quality settings is probably also affecting the loading time. Do you have a lot of programs running in the background? Anti virus/anti spyware etc. Is your Xeon a new one with 800FSB? The older Xeons had lower FSB which isn't all that great for gaming. Try running sound quality on hardware/medium. If the soundmax can't handle it then software/medium.

I hope my computer runs much faster after I offload the audio. I noticed in the audio options you can select hardware rendering and x-fi. If this is the case, then all sound overhead will be completely offloaded to the soundblaster x-fi card. Creative site has announced them available for pre-order.

maybe do 500mb more on the memory, when i look at the bf2 process in task manager, it used like 1.1 gb, plus teamspeak and any hardware profile software you may have might add a some more ... maybe go 1.5 gb ram if you can afford it otherwise, that looks awesome. I have the 6800 with 256 (agp though) and its very smooth wth everything maxed.
Its not a 64 bit application, so it wont take advantage of the 64 bit processor, but hey, it cant hurt. Plus im sure battlefield 3 will take advantage of dual core and 64 bit.

As i posted my full spec else where - AMD 3 ghz XP 1 gb ram 256 XFX 6800gt 256 - running at Ultra settings, Audigy 2
Regualr defrag, virus / spyware check
Similar spec PC to your system.
Even with my card if i have most on the graphics on high during the game if you do anything sudden like turn , run around a corner into someone or grab an AA i was getting big lag - Ping was low and not due to connection issues causing lag.
Looking at the cards you have listed u may have to set a lot of graphics on medium to get decent game play. Its gonna be trial and error for ya.
I am sure peopel with lesser spec machines will say they run it on high etc but not all machines seem to be the same even if their specs are.
Good luck

Browsing this thread I really don't see anyone with 2GB of ram complaining about stuttering that much. On the other hand I see tons of 1GB players complaining about it. Heck, I am bottlenecked by my 2.0Ghz P4 really badly, but I only get low frame rates when stuff happens, no stuttering or freezing, which went away completely (with the exception of the first 5 seconds of gameplay) with the 2 Gigs of Ram.

my new pc is going to pwn with a 7800gt:)
Sure 2G would slow the game down as well as speed it up:wall: .
Problem is saying 2Gb of memory means nothing really.
If you compare 1G to 2G of memory in the same system with the same cas, fsb, same dual channel. 2G will either be faster or not faster but definetly not slower.
Problem is idiots going from 1G of dual channel memory to 2G of high latency cas 3 memory or single channel and drastically reduce their memory bandwidth (performance).
example add a extra 1G stick to their 2x512mb dual channel memory and get 2G of single channel <--slower.
1Gb of dual channel is faster than 2G of single channel.
2Gb could be faster than 1G everything else being equal.
2Gb will always be faster than 1G if you run out of memory by using high grahpics or ... settings with 1G.
I say go for 2G of PC3200 2-3-3-6 or 2-3-2-5 cas, stay away from the value ram. Corsair XMS, patriot, of OCZ platimum are good.
On cas, 200+ Mhz 3-3-3-7 isn't faster than 2-3-2-5 200mhz until you can run >246 mhz with 3-3-3-7.

You should be able to run at 1024x768 with some high settings and the rest medium, with no more than 2xAA, and get good fps. More RAM and a better video card will improve your settings.

could I play bf2 on these settings
1.4ghz AMD XP
1GB Ram
fx5700 256mb
Your processor might be a little too slow to run it, but if it can, then you would be on the lowest settings at a low resolution :( .

Hi
Ordered a new PC with the following specs:
Athlon 64 3700 (San Diego) 1MB Cache
1GB dual channel DDR
Radeon X800XL PCI-e 256MB
Asus A8N-E motherboard
After reading several posts here I decided that I shoulda ordered 2GB RAM. Anyway the motherboard has 4 DDR slots - are all of these dual channel? Was thinking of ordering 2 more 512 sticks, would it still be running in dual channel mode?
Yes 4x512MB sticks will run dual channel, as long as each pair is made of 2 matched sticks. Also you need to put them in the right slots ;) . With the 2GB you should be able to run on medium-high overall.
