View Full Version : Game Message: There was an error reading from the server

No matter what I play, when I go multiplayer, when the round is over I get the following:

" Game Message: There was an error reading from the server. "

I am running a WinXPSP2 updated OS with the nvidia 77.30s that came with the game. All network functions work on box, even multiplayer pings are good at around 100ms. Running off apartment complex's NAT connection that has no port blocking, but also no port tunneling. Anyone else get this or think what I can do to fix?

Thanks

It's happening to me too, and I get pings of around 20-50 on the servers that I play on. Does anyone know what causes this?

This is really getting to me now. It's a EA/gamespy problem. Somethings changed since yesterday and it definitely not my end.

The error is with the gamespy account server, not the server your playing on.

Im not even sure EA understand whats happening. On the EA forum, EA started on about opening ports and stuff which is rubbish They obviously think it was the game servers kicking us but it isn't.

I really hope they understand this and sort this out their end.

Do gamespy have a support site? As it probably half their fault as well.

got the exact same thing, only today too, i also couldnt login at all earlier, methinks it has to do with the servers/ea/gamespy gearing up for the full release but i'm not a techhead so dont ask me.

If it is something to do with "gearing up for the full release" then why havent EA responded to our questions and told us that, instead of saying stuff about opening our ports etc.

Don't think they have a clue what's going on.

It's been problems for the last 9 hours and no one has told us anything.

It even happens when you make a local server yourself. I did this to practice flying a bit without getting in peoples way and getting them annoyed, and when I tried to disconnect and join a proper server the message came up

EDIT. 200th post. I would like to thank my family, God, my friends and anybody else who made this possible

This has been ongoing since I got the demo when it came out. I have just learned to deal with it, but it really is going to hinder on my decision whether to purchase the game. Game play on the servers keeps me at 30-60 ms pings, but at the end of the round, I get dropped.

It also happens to me when I escape out to change my configuration mid game. There is no chance of it letting me do that, since it just knocks me off the "account server."

Btw, maybe we should all start posting our connections, to see what we have in common.

I am on an apartment complex LAN that connects through firewalls to hi-fi wireless internet. 4Mbit synchronous, although shared and ported to 200 customers.

This communication problem with the server has to do with the full retail version's coding I think.

It's definately NOT a WIFI problem - my internet stays connected after being booted by the game back to the main menu.

It's NOT a lag problem - am with OPTUS ADSL and ran the demo at around 43 - 63 ms, whilst with the retail version I got down to about 35 ms on some local Melbourne servers.

It's NOT a problem with my specs - the game runs perfectly in single player, and performed respectably in the demo version. Disconnection from the server was an odd chance in every 6-8 rounds of Gulf of Oman.

It's NOT a problem with Gamespy - I don't run it to find any BF2 games, and know nothing about using it.

What frustrates me most is the fact that this sh*t did not occur with the Demo version (or to be accurate, only occured 10-15% of the time - which I think is tolerable), but in the full retail version I get on average 3 minutes of playtime before being told I've lost my connection with the server. What a load of BS, especially considering the ridiculous loading time of around 4-6mins I've got to wait.

EA, get your act together and sort this mess out pronto.

I think I might have an idea of what is going on with this but do not yet have a solution. I have an open tech ticket with EA on this.

I noticed in my firewall (hardware appliance, Sonicwall) that packets where being dropped at about the same time I would get this error message. Those packets where coming to random ports on my firewall but were originating from ports specified by EA to open to make the game function correctly. Such as 28910.

Looks like they screwed up with the account servers and instead of sending the packets to the ports they are originating from the ports.

This is a nightmare for anyone with a firewall as you would have to expose your machine to the internet fully in order to receive the packets on random ports.

I will post more as the support case with EA progresses.

I too have a sonicwall firewall, and i also get this strange "There was an error reading for the server" error. Even if i launch a single player i get this error.
If ingame I press the escape key to show the menu i get disconnected as well.

I have discovered that if i connect my PC directly to my modem the problem goes away, so the problem has something to do with the firewall.

I also tried to allow all traffic to and from the server i was playing on, this did not help. I.E Allow * from my local IP to SERVERIP and Allow * from SERVERIP to Local IP. This did not work.

Im guessing that the game is contacting some other server, perhapse an authentication server, each time it crashes. Does anyone know the DNS or IP of this server? I want to allow all traffic to this server instead.

Update:

I used currPort (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cports.html)
and found out that BF2 contact 207.38.11.34 on port 29900 when logging inn. So i allowed full access to and from this IP, and now every thing seems to work well. The only problem is that this IP can change at any time, would like to know the DNS. If anyone finds out, let me know.

That is a Gamespy server:

Intelenet Communications INTELENET-207 (NET-207-38-0-0-1)
207.38.0.0 - 207.38.127.255
GameSpy Industries ICI-GAMESPY-3 (NET-207-38-8-0-1)
207.38.8.0 - 207.38.15.255

But they don't provide any reverse DNS information on that address. Also I am getting no where with EA tech support. They have just shot back to open up the ports listed in the readme.

I have also tested without my Sonicwall and have succeeced also. I think this is basic game flaw and the server is talking on a designated port to a random port.

Opening all access to 207.38.11.34 did not work. Im getting thrown out again. I also tried to open all access to the 207.38.8.0 - 207.38.15.255 range, no joy there either.

Anyone know what to do? (short of buying a new firewall)

Sonic Firewall is what they use here in my off-campus dorm to service out the internet. I ended up ordering a private DSL connection that is hooked directly into my game machine. Now I am paying the most expensive MMOG out there.. Battlefield 2 for $70 / month (price of all fees and phone line and dsl put together).

Hope its worth it!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL THOSE NET GURUS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. SHAME ON EA FOR NOT ASSISTING!

Unfortunately the D-Link doesn't do half of what the Sonicwall does and that is why I use a Sonicwall.

Update on EA Tech Support:
They must be the stupidest people on earth. I have not been replied to by the same tech twice and they all reply with dumb answers like, "Open the ports specified below...". I wonder if they really care about making this product work.

Anymore updates on this?

I am also suffering from this problem, after each round I get disconnected from server and get the same: "There was an error reading from the server" message.

The network that I am on does infact use a sonicwall firewall, by the way.

Figured I would give this a bump.

It doesn't matter what game browser you use (I use ASE (All Seeing Eye)).

EA is no help and has now said there is nothing they can do for me. :(

I switch between my Sonicwall and a 3COM gateway when I want to play. I will probable build a 2 pronged network where I can go out through the 3COM when I want to play and then be behind the Sonicwall when I am not.

I already posted in the Planet Battlefield forums on this problem http://www.forumplanet.com/planetbattlefield/topic.asp?fid=13392&tid=1694192&p=4 . See #56 for my post.

No solution, but I did use ethereal to try and get more information. Perhaps others can do the same and we can find some pattern to this madness?

Hi:
sonicwall tz170 here and same problem. I only have the SWall to run a tunnel.. so i gave up with useless tech support from ea and ended up configuring a linux box as a router with strongswan to run VPN and iptables and finally i was able to play without disconnects.. thought it might help as a workaround. fedora C4 and latest ver of strongswan, easy setup.. if you need help lmk.

Soho 3 here and same trouble. Not sure if it is really the Sonicwall causing this tho.

We allowed all Any 207.38.0.0 - 207.38.127.255 (WAN ) name: bf2web.gamespy.com( the gamespy block from earlier post ) and same problem.

Also, tried opening up the game machine's ip alltogether and same problem.

I'm no expert but if the account server is trying to talk to the game on a port that
was'nt initiated by the game, how would the firewall ( or switch for that matter ) know where to route the traffic?

I found the solution to the sonicwall issue! = ) By default, sonicwall terminates any connection that is inactive for 15 minutes. The connection to one of the servers happens when you first login, and data is sent also when the map is over. So if you spend over 15 minutes on a map, your connection will be terminated. (And the program doesn't try to reopen the connection).

So the solution is to log into the Sonicwall router, in the firewall tab, click on 'Services'. Add a new service called 'BF2' which is on 'TCP' port '29900'. Then go to 'Access Rules' and add a new rule that 'Allow's 'BF2' from 'LAN' to 'WAN'. The key thing you have to do is click on the 'Advanced' tab when creating this rule. (You start on the 'General' tab) Change the 'TCP Connection Inactivity Timeout' to 1000.

This should solve all your problems with Battlefield 2 and your Sonicwall router! :)

-Nick

Curioius that the EA support forum acknowleges the problem and mentions a fix but does not post the fix!!!!!!!!!!!!

FINALLY A FIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Set the WAN link settings to 100 Mbps Full Duplex and the WAN MTU 1404 and the Network Inactivity Timeout to 60 minutes.

Works great for me and feels good to be back behind a firewall!

P.S. This unit is a SOHO3

Update on this. I just rebuilt the configuration of my unit and had to reset things. Go into the rule that allows all services out from the LAN and set the time out period to 60 minutes and check the box to allow fragmented packets.
