After fighting with the Recorder for a few days, i finally managed to figure it out with the help of these and other forums. The Guide EA Games gave us is a piece of garbage. Its confusing to say the least. So i thought i would post my own guide. I'll make it as simple as possible. And on a side note: A demo or a demo file is another name for a BF2 Recorder file.
First of all you must know all off the keys necessary to use this Recorder.
Q – opens the Playback Rose. Move the mouse to highlight the desired playback option and press the Left Mouse Button to select. Options available here that are not bound to separate keys include "Restart" and "Quit".
T – opens the Camera Rose. Choose the camera option or cycle through the available players.
1 – Pause the playback (also available in the Playback Rose).
2 – Playback recorded session at normal speed (also available in the Playback Rose).
3 – Playback recorded session at 5% of normal speed (also available in the Playback Rose).
4 – Playback recorded session at 25% of normal speed (also available in the Playback Rose).
5 – Playback recorded session at 50% of normal speed (also available in the Playback Rose).
6 – Playback recorded session at normal speed (also available in the Playback Rose).
7 – Playback recorded session at 150% of normal speed (also available in the Playback Rose).
8 – Playback recorded session at 300% of normal speed (also available in the Playback Rose).
Spacebar – cycle between players.
Right Mouse Button – cycle between free camera and player camera.
Mouse wheel – zoom camera in and out when locked onto a player.
W, A, S, D, Ctrl and Shift – move free camera around map, forward, left, backwards, right, down and up.
Mouse look – aim free camera.
This step allows you to record your camera movements in the game.
1.Download ftp://largedownloads.ea.com/pub/misc/demo.cmd and place this in both of these folders.
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo\mods\bf2
2.Create a demos folder in the following location.
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo\mods\bf2
3.Place all the demos that you wish to render into this folder. Your demos can be found in the following location.
C:\Documents and Settings\"yourname"\My Documents\Battlefield 2 Demo\Profiles\Default\demos
(I recommend rendering one demo file at a time so that its less confusing)
4. Open your command prompt. (This can be done by pressing start, run, and typing cmd. You may also be able to find your command prompt in your windows accessories folder.)
5.In your command prompt, type the directory to your BF2 Demo.
Example: cd c:\program files\EA Games\Battlefield 2 Demo
6.Now a line of text should appear that states yoru BF2 Directory.
Example: C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo>
Type in the following command: demo.cmd +c "name of demo"
Example: demo.cmd +c demo8
Your game will start up and you should also recieve a message in your command prompt that states: Playing back demo and recording camera...
After you get past your game loading screen, you will enter a loading game screen. Once the game is done loading, click join game. You are now in your video. Any movements of the camera that you make now are being recorded.
It is STRONGLY recommended that you continure recording until the video ends. My video froze at the end and i pressed control+alt+delete and closed Battlefield out and my video works fine. Just be carefull on this step.
Playing back your video with the pre-recorded camera movements
1.In your C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo\mods\bf2\demos folder you will now find a BF2CAM file. This file is your video with the pre-recorded camera movements.
2.Now go back to your Command Prompt and type in the following:
demo.cmd "name of demo" "name of cam file" -def
Example: demo.cmd demo8 mydemocam -def
Your game will once again start up and bring you to a game loading screen. Click join game and you will begin watching your pre-recorded camera movements. Your command prompt should also read: Playing back demo with recorded camera...
I do not know how necessary this step is however it is helpfull in finding out how your camera movements look once they are all put together.
Converting to AVI
1. In your command prompt type the following command:
demo.cmd +r "name of demo" "name of cam file"
Example: demo.cmd +r demo8 mydemocam
Your game will once again open. Just do as you did in the previous steps. Your command prompt will also read: Rending AVI...
2.Once the game loading bar is complete press ALT+TAB to minimize the game. A small box will have appeared. This is your choice of encoders. It is recommended that you use the DivX encoder. Click your choice, than press ok.
3.Open the game window back up (it should be minimized at the bottom of your screen) and click join game.
NOTE: You MUST leave the game and the video running on your screen until the video is over. If you minimize your game and try to bring your window back up during this encoding process, your game will close out and your AVI file will be corrupt.
4.If you choose to stop rendering before the end of the demo, press R.
Adding Sound
Your AVI file will not have sound in it. This step will help you to create a sound file to add to your video.
1.Type in the following command in your command prompt
demo.cmd +s "name of demo file" "name of cam file"
Example: demo.cmd +s demo8 mydemocam
Your game will once again load. Just do as you did in the previous steps. However, once you click join game, no video will play. You will begin to hear sound from your video.
*I have yet to complete this step. What I have considered doing is recorind the sound with fraps, than using fraps to create sound file. I may then be able to combine the sound and the AVI file in a video editting program such as Video Edit Magic.
I hope this guide helps everyone. I tried to make it as simple as possible.

This just seems way too complicated and not worth the time. Hopefully someone can code a program later on that converts your demos into .avi. And EA said this would make recording videos simpler.

A subforum for tutorials like this would be really cool. Give newbies a place to look when they need help with something, =)
Thanks a ton for this guide, I've been having lots of trouble with BFRecorder, and this helped a TON.

Yeah, I expected some kind of DVD-player type interface with BFRecorder, but overall this is the best thing since replays in Rogue Spear and IL-2. People will be able to get all of the shots they want and then encode them to whatever video format they prefer, including formats not yet created!

Actually this is quite simple if you really read it. It's a shame there is no easy way to have sound though.
My question is this: Can you change the location of where the file is written? I'm running short on room on my C drive.

Just a theory, but line 178 of demo.cmd says this:
set _AVIFILE=%_DEMOROOT%\Demos\%_AVIBASE%_%_WIDTH%x%_H EIGHT%_fov%_FOVX%_fps%_RENDERFPS%.avi
I haven't tried it, but you sould possibly change that to be something like:
set _AVIFILE=Z:\BF2Demos\%_AVIBASE%_%_WIDTH%x%_HEIGHT% _fov%_FOVX%_fps%_RENDERFPS%.avi
If anyone tries this, tell me if it works. Could be a cool little hack.

Now if what you mean is "how do you get battlefield recorder video files", you can download these from servers that are running the battlefield recorder. To find these servers, click Battlefield Recorder in your Multiplayer filter.

Hm.. quick question.
I wanted to stage a certain battle. I started up a LAN game, and got my brother to join. I made sure to enable (auto) BattleRecorder in the server launcher. My brother and I did the fight, and we both left the game. In the dedicated server console I typed "exit" and quit out.
However, no demo was created.
Basically, how do you get the demo file to be created in the first place?

To make your own recording:
1. Create the following directories:
* <installdir>:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo\mods\bf2\demos
* <systemdir>:\My Documents\Battlefield 2 Demo\Profiles\Default\demos
2. In BF2 type:
* <apostrophe>demo.recorddemo 1<enter>
3. It should say "recording demo...", if so, hit <apostrophe> to close cmd mode
4. Do yo thang!
5. To stop recording, type:
* <apostrophe>demo.stopRecording<enter>
6. Disconnect and Quit game
7. Copy the <whatever>.bf2demo file from: <installdir>\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo\mods\bf2\demos to
<systemdir>\My Documents\Battlefield 2 Demo\Profiles\Default\demos
8. Restart the game and go to Community.
This process seems buggy. The game died on me 3 times when typing in the demo.<whatever> cmds. Also, it seems once you type "demo.recorddemo 1" it toggles the flag indefinitely. It will error out the next time you type it...even if you have quit previously...hmm. So when you go back in you have to play around with the command to get it to record again.

We have the same problem. I'm trying all I can think of to get the ftp to work right. Could someone who has this working please post how they got the ftp option to work? Also, I assume error logging was turned off in the demo because it says look in some error file but that file doesn't exist. I've looked all over. If someone could please provide some insight on if they got the ftp recording option working on their server.

I'm having a problem with this step of the guide, after i type demo.cmd +c demo1 the game starts up and starts loading but after a few seconds i am thrown back into windows. After that my cmd prompt window says Done! and it does create the bf2cam file but the filesize is 0 kb. Now obviously its 0 kb because it never got the chance to record any camera movements. I've tried this 4 times with 2 different demo files that are confirmed to work for other people but it keeps doing the same thing, anyone know why?
Is recording these camera movements necessary to playback a demo file? i am assuming yes because i also get thrown back into windows when i try to play them from the community section in the game.
EDIT: I have successfully recorded a demo of my own using Raorior's method, it generated a bf2cam file as well but when i tried to load the demo in community it starts loading and again boots me to windows. So obviously my comp simply just doesn't like these files since the same thing keeps happening with either method, i'm stumped. :(

Do you have any mods applied? I applied the "31 bot, singleplayer" crack and even though it worked wonderfully for that task, trying anything else in the game would crash it to desktop. I had to reinstall the demo yesterday because I couldn't join internet games (even after I reversed the mod). Post your demo file and I will try to play it.

Couple of quick questions:
The choice of codecs that I'm presented, are these codecs built into bf2, or does it use the codecs that are installed on my system?
Did anyone change or configure any of the drivers to tweak them for better picture/sound quality?
Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,
been screwing around with the recorder a bit..
after copying the demo.cmd (ftp://largedownloads.ea.com/pub/misc/demo.cmd) to my directories as stated in the original post I also put it in the directory with my BF2 demo standalone server map.
When being host in single player/create server (local tho, haven't tried online yet) I can just use the console (~ key for me) and type:
demo.recorddemo <demo name to be created> [<-- this starts recording a demo]
demo.stoprecording [<-- this stops it from recording]
I disconnect and copy the files to the my documents folder (for some reason you have to put them in the default profile, other profiles won't work.. does anyone remember seeing anything about that?)
now I go to community in game (just using alt tab ofcourse) and I run the demo (tho I usually also change profile to defaultplayer).
Q1: Can you also record the BF2CAM file from the console? I know it's possible when starting from the command line, but I'd really like to start and end it from inside the game...
Now, I'm also running a dedicated server.. with auto record on... Like others have said before this just creates empty files named for time of day and stuff like that.
You get a DOS window when running a dedicated server. When seeing the server using auto record, I can just type in
demo.stoprecording [<-- the recording stops]
demo.recorddemo <some file name I like> [<-- starts recording]
and when the round is over the recording is stopped automatically :) and it's working great... however :) I would like the dedicated server auto record correctly...
Q2: does anyone know what I should do to get this to work correctly?
So far this thread has been a great help, thanx for all involved people :)

agreed.. the questions remain tho (see two posts up)
Also have some extra questions:
I made a demo and with that I made a cam version
Now while doing this I used the variable speed settings a lot, to capture some nice actions ...
But then when I was rendering the file (and also when testing the cam file) the file was running at normal speed, inc the cam... so some bits had the cam going ballistic due to low speed cam setup.. I had to use the speed settings during the rendering aswell to get it to run smoothly (so I did find out the game speed can be changed even during rendering)..
Q: Anyone find a way to make the cam file render viable including speed (and sound pref ofcourse, that would be great ... render sound and video at the same)
Q: Also sound rendering doesn't seem to work for me.. any thoughts?
thnx in advance, Brad

So how does everyone move their cameras around, when I pause the playback and move the camera to another position, on the playback you can see the camera move from point A to point B in ~.5 seconds or so. When watching the movies created by the other players it seems the camera changes are quick and clean.
Are people just editing out the camera movements in their movies?

i think so. that i know of bf recorder will not save as a movie file so most the vids are made with fraps. they record what shots they want then set up the next part.
Brad>FLY<King

Nope like I said in my previous post this is what you can do:
When making a CAM file from a DEMO file you can use the speed buttons (see first post) and mouse + keyboard to move around and make a nice sequence.
When encoding the DEMO + CAM files to an AVI file you can try and recreate the speed settings manually (loads of work taking up a lot of time I know) and you'll get a pretty sweet looking video.
Sadly you miss sound this way. Even if I could encode the sound it would lack the speed settings and be totally out of sync with my video. I was hoping to maybe do a demo.cmd +rs <name demo> <name cam> but haven't tried it yet..
A prog like FRAPS will produce a video easily, just a button away from sound and video ... however you'll be stuck in your own player, with just the available camera positions.. I like fraps but the possibilities with the BF recorder seem to be pretty amazing...

It's really to bad DICE made this overly complecated. They really lead us to believe it would be easy. While I have got it to record demos and I'm sure I'll get it to record cam movements but you can see this feature was not thought out at all. At least from a movie making standpoint. Sure it's good for analising game footage but for making movies it sucks.
Missing features.
-Ability to rewind!!!
-Ability to start and stop recording camera movements while watching file. When its stops recording a little popup comes up. "do you want to export this camera movement?" etc...
-Change the speed of the camera while in free cam mode or while locked on for that matter. Right now it's too slow while locked on and too fast when in free cam.
-A GUI interface
-Proper instructions
-Ability to clip sections of the demo
-I could go on and on
I'm not pissed at DICE for messing this up since they are game makers and not video/movie makers. But they did lead us on saying it would be so easy to use this feature. I hope a modder can come up with a external program with a movie makers mindset where we can really have control of the demo file.

I apologize, but I can't seem to get an answer on this one:
What resolution does it render in for you guys? I do the whole demo +r blah blahcam and get the return line:
- Executing bf2.exe +wx 0 +szx 800 +szy 600 +demo demo.tmp
Now, I'm pretty sure the szy/x line is the resolution, I'm just curious if you guys are getting the same thing and if there is a way to change it.

I tried changing the res in the cmd file, but it just crashed so as it seems now, you either have to stick with 800x600 or find a way to render the two other options.
:size_default:

Thats all i can figure, but there has to be a better way.. :/

hey guys, dumb question. how do you actually start recording what you are doing?
Brad>FLY<King
06-20-2005, 02:25 PM
read up
also .. I guess it's not possible (yet?) to record as a client in the game. The server can record and then upload the demo for all to download .. since the demo is the same for everyone in the round the only thing you might miss is the ability to start and stop recording at your own time...
also I have to agree the ability to cut up demo files / rewind them is a serious hole in the recorder setup.. I can deal with it atm because making movies now is pretty much a full 2 hour deal for me so I only make movies of the best bits..
I do have a general question tho:
Q: Which settings do you people use when encoding into avi.. Which codec and which codec setting, how long does a 12 min demo + cam take to encode into avi? Do you use the speed settings during encoding aswell (I do .. takes up some time but makes the finished movie look pretty good)? How large do your movies become?
Ow and you can actually use the sprint/walk key (l shift) when moving the camera for pinpointing and smoother camera movement :)
I love this game already :)

First post!
Don't think it's been mentioned but does anyone know how to remove the nametags above the players names when playing back the demo and/or rendering video? It can be done as they're removed in all the promo videos and I used to know how to do it in BF1942 but the old console commands don't work in BF2.

I'm kinda hoping there will be an extended set of cmds in the full version of the game... but for now... no I don't know how to do that.. Also .. is there a way to jump to a certain player in demo instantly? having to pause and 'space' through up to 64 people seems too annoying..

i would also like ot knwo the following things:
When rendering, it removes play names, but how do you remove them when watching the demo back anyway?
how do you change quality/resolution of the rendered demo?
thats all for now i think

hi, i've been messing about with it the past week aswell and came to this forum looking for answers on how to do some things that i couldn't figure out how to do, well it seems that the people here are in the same boat, didn't find anything that i hadn't already figured out, the main things for me that are annoying are the inability to start rendering from anywhere other than the beginning of a demo and the fact that you can't playback the demo in first person view with first person models, oh well guess i'll just keep working on it
heres something that might make the process a wee bit quicker though, in the directory you have demo.cmd in create a new text document and type "start demo.cmd" without the quotation marks and save the text document as demo.bat (all files)
then running this .bat file will elliminate the need to go start -> run -> cmd -> c:/program files/ea games/battlefield 2 demo etc
also you can as i do, make a shortcut to the demo.bat and place it on the desktop as BF2 DemoPlayback.lnk and you can add the battlefield2 icon to it then
one thing i will say for it, is that compared to other games, the battlerecorder provides a fantastic method of recamming, that added to the ability to set up one profile for gaming and one profile for your movie making config, makes it a very nice engine for movie making

I've been running into this problem quite often, I start to render the movie, and step away from my pc, hours later when I come back to check movie, it ended without recording the whole thing.
Sometimes it records for 5 minutes, sometimes 2, of all the times that I've rendered a movie, its been able to finish the whole 10 minutes once... its very strange, anyone else ran across this problem?

This is a truly !!!PATHETIC ATTEMPT!!! by EA/DICE, it does virtually NOTHING that Fraps cant do, just spectate and have Fraps handy and you can do EXACTLY THE SAME THING!!! (hud of of course)
Soory I'm relaly annoyed, we were told we could set Camera TRACKS, not just record the bloody mouse movements!!!! Look at Rome:Total War movie editor NOW THAT IS A GOOD MOVE MAKER.
BFRecorder Movie making is a waste of F***ing Time! You can just load the recording and use fraps and get the same result!!!

Got to admit it's a lot of effort to do something that Fraps seems to be able to do a whole lot easier..
Anyways, another question, is it normal for the video rendering to take an age? Left my machine rendering a video last night and after nearly 7 hours of recording it had managed to render 20 minutes of footage (it's recording at what looks like a rate of 2-3fps) which seems like pretty poor performance to me.. :hmm:
imported_NeoRicen
06-22-2005, 09:47 AM
That's pretty normal, it has to render each fram at top quality while reading the camera 'tracks'. Rome Total War is similar but very rarely do you get a 20min video to render.
The ONLY advantage of this method is the is no framerate hits.

Ah right, thought it was something I was doing wrong.. the other annoying thing is that out of those 20 minutes I'd probably end up using only 2-3 minutes of it in a video anyway but you can't choose the bits you want at the time of rendering.. :hmm:

I actually haven't tried to put a retail demo in the demo demo folder to check it out... I guess it would only work for gulf of oman 16 and 32 player maps..
I suppose it works just the same as the demo with slightly diff folders (it's in the same main folders tho, just replace Battlefield 2 demo with Battlefield 2 or summin)

just rendered a movie last nite, heres my experience so far rendering avi's
first i rendered an avi with fullframes (uncompressed), and stopped the playback about 3 minutes into the demo, the resultant avi file gspot reported to be "not an avi file", the same thing with huffyuv and xvid @10,000 bitrate
next i created a 1minute demo and let it render the whole demo instead of stopping midway through, with fullframes (uncompressed) the resultant avi file gspot reported to have a corrupt header, huffyuv just crashed, xvid @10,000 bitrate worked but vegas reported the file to be "offline"
so, i took the xvid compressed avi and processed it RGB uncompressed with virtualdub and was then able to bring it into vegas
hope that might have helped someone, next, i find it usefull to be able to render, cam, capture sound etc with the game windowed, heres how
in the demo.cmd, replace this line "set _BF2EXE=bf2.exe" with "set _BF2EXE=bf2.exe +fullscreen 0", simple stuff
very usefull for sound cature, btw i recommend wholeheartedly audacity to anyone who is still using soundforge as a sound editor, audacity is free, open-source and a lot better than soundforge http://audacity.sourceforge.net

The not being able to see yourself... indeed you have to be sure you are actually playing at that time.. The demo is recorded for the full round.. when playing on servers without time limit it is pretty hard to see when in the game you actually came in
also it's not always possible to select a player... when they are dead, not spawned it's impossible and if you are constantly 'space-ing' through the players you might not find yourself for ages (being dead just at the time you would find yourself...
so you might wanna try just playing the demo and looking at the messages... if you see yourself getting killed, pause the demo and look for your killer... you might remember where you would spawn next, go there and see if you spawn, or unpause, wait for 16 secs (or a bit more) pause again and scroll through every player.. you'll see yourself if all goes well.. also try to remember which players were above you in the scroll list, makes it easier to find later on
:)
good luck
Shift-Space takes you to the previous player, BTW.

How do I start recording??? The post is just showing me the keys to playback the file and how to export to AVI. Well, how do I get it to start recording. Q and T are radio chats.
OK do this, when in the game and at the kit selection screen just prior to actualy entering the map press the TILDE key, thats the one to the left of the # 1 and just below the escape key. That will open the cosole. Then enter this command
demo.recordDemo [demoname]
- Starts recording current gameplay and saves the file as demoname.bf2demo in your \Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2
Demo\mods\bf2\Demos directory
then to stop recording enter this command
demo.stopRecording - Stops current demo recording
you can do this for any game you are hosting, be it single player or creating a multiplayer. I use it for training purposes when I make a LOCAL (lan) game to practice different techniques, and to learn how to fly and bomb. It lets me see what the ground forces will see when I come in on a bombing run.
goto http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2_1.html
thats where I got my info from. Very consise instructions and commands list there.
also try this,
renderer.drawFps [0,1] - Displays the current and average frames per second (FPS) in the top left corner. 0 = OFF and 1 = ON
I hope that helps.

And a second after this, the screen is being black a littlebit, -just like everytime i am starting the demo. But it jumps out to windows again, and does not enter the game! Help! Whats happening?

Hi everyone,
after copying the demo.cmd ("ftp://largedownloads.ea.com/pub/misc/demo.cmd") to my directories as stated in the original post I also put it in the directory with my BF2 demo standalone server map.
^^ I tried that too when you copy the cmd file are you supposed to save page as and then save it into your folders?
and as for the console commands like lets say i put demo.recorddemo <goat (or any thing else)> it says failed to recorddemo. maybe the demo <goat> already exists....
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

-longshot|CO']well i was able to get it to render. it maximized after i chose a divx codec and i joined game and it went through the demo very very sluggishly, not sure if that is right or not. i let it go all the way through without pushing anything just to be safe, and it quit automatically when it finished. but when i go to the folder, the avi is at 0 kb! doesnt play, of course. i dont understand, someone please help me. thanks in advance.

It's supposed to be "sluggish". Rendering video is a slow process and it renders frame for frame so obviously it won't be as smooth as when you're playing.
I have also had problems with my AVI being 0 kb and I have come to the conclusion that the DivX encoder is behind is. It seems like BF2 doesn't like it - even though I managed to render with DivX once.

Compressor? Sorry? Doesn't that have to do with rendering the footage? I'm talking about the demo quality... the amount of engine events it as capturing.

Sure it does, the "bob [knife] mary" messages are part of the hud.
But I guess you're refering to the nametags. Well, the only way is to NOT hit space to select any players. Just freecam and the nametags won't show up.
When recording single-player footage does anyone have any idea what level of "quality" it is, and how to increase the quality?
I think it's in a con file in your BF2 dir. I check the profile directory in my documents and I can't find anything about demo quality there.

If you don't hit space to focus on an individual player, it doesn't show the names. You'll have to use the directional keys to navigate to the action though.

One thing to note is that 64player serveres doesnt support the demo function, so if you want demo`s play on 32 servers or 16 server. Not all serveres have battlerecorder on, but most do. When you have played your round , go back to the meny and click the "Community" tab. Here you can view and download demo`s.

I've read this guide, but I'm having problems very early on. I can't seem to record the camera movements. I made a demo in singleplayer, and copied it to the right directories, but when i bring up the cmd and type in the bf2 dir nothing happens. When I watched the demo however, there was already a cam file there, so it may have recorded it then. However, when I try and play this back I can't get it to work. When i bring up the cmd and type cd d:\games\ea games\battlefield 2 nothing happens. If i then try and type demo.cmd demo1 demo1-def, it just says that demo.cmd is not recognized.
Any help would be appreciated. It may just be that I'm typing the wrong directory in, but I looked at a different guide to this one which said to do something else, so I'm a tad confused.

Sheepah, and others,
After trying everything command line, I finally went and got Battlelauncher; http://www.battlelauncher.com/ ; No I am not affiliated with them. On the main page, there is a link to "20 steps to Make a Movie", which I will also link to here(hope they don't mind):
http://www.followme2.com/phpfusion/html/forum/viewthread.php?forum_id=14&thread_id=54#165
Again, I am not affiliated, I was having all the same problems. However, after following the steps, and installing Battlelauncher, I am able to do everything that I was trying to do from the start. I am now underway in the production stages of my BF2 mini-series, which I hope I can pull off since the people who are going to take part in it all want creative control...Dang BF2 actors. :)
Hope this helps, and like I said, I am now underway, thanks to all for helping me. I know, I should have tried BL a week ago.

I've scanned this entire thread and I can honestly say I've been more confused trying to figure this out than I was when I took my first algebra class.
Why the F**K can i just press a button to start recording whatever is on my screen and then press the same one (or different one) to stop recording what's there. I mean if these guys at dice graduate with masters degree's from MIT and sh*t except they don't have enough logical sense to just build something like that. I mean make a simplified version for idiots like me and then have a better utility or more advanced features for stuff like camera movements and slow motion crap. Seriously I can't even pi*s strait sometimes but atleast I could probably built something more simple than these A+ grads.

found on www.battlelauncher.com. I had great success after I used this link.
Battlerecorder allows you to record camera movements, which is something that I think Fraps doesn't allow you to do.
Think of Battle recorder as the camera crew on your movie. The demo you record is the set of your movie, and the demo is all the action happening on your set. With battlerecorder, you can place the camera anywhere and follow specific action.
Creating your movie is a involves 3 main things, recording your demo (in game), then recording your camera movements (from BFRecorder), then finally rendering the demo WITH your camera movies into the AVI file used for editing.
Once it's learned it's not bad, granted, It took me a couple/few days to get the hang of it, but once you do, it's not bad.

Your going to lauch battlefield 2. Once your logged in, left click on community button (top of page) if you dowloaded the demos from a server that had battlerecorder on, then they will be listed on the right hand side. Left click on the one you would like to watch first, then left click on play file button (on bottom right). Unfortunatley BF2 dosent support playing two of them at the same time (right now). But Im sure there will be another patch out soon. Enjoy..............:D

Hey Guys,
I started my BF2 movie adventure last night, and I have a few comments / questions.
First off, I have successfully made a demo and democam file. No problem. My problem came when it was time to render. I tried the default arguements "+r demoname democamname" and it ran ok, but I was a little worried about the slow frame rate.
So I ran it again with the arguements "+r +m (m makes the resolution 400x300)+fps 20" (fps 20 makes the frames render at 20 per second)
After running it that way, I was able to render with realistic frames (no 2-3 fps crap). The thing is, about 13 minutes into the video, the rendering stopped and I was back at my desktop. I thought this was odd, so I checked the AVI that it made, and it was a FOUR GIG file. I'm guessing that I got kicked to desktop because the max file size in windows is 4g (just guessing)
The thing is, the quality at 400x300 ain't so great. I was wondering how others are rendering at 800x600 and not getting 10g+ filesizes? I'm sure it has to do w/ compression, but the weird thing is, I'm not getting the little popup that asks what codec to use.
Anyone have any pearls of wisdom? 400x300 is do-able, I've already begun editing that little 4g cut and started laying some music over it, (BF2 music video) but I'd like the quality to be better.
Just in case the problem is my system, my specs are:
3.2Ghz P4 w/ HT
1g PC3200 Geil RAM
ATI 9600 Radeon
Windows XP Pro
Thanks for the help (if any)!
Great guide BTW ^__^

I dont know that much about computers, can u explain that in simpler terms.

I'd scrap the demo.cmd file altogether and move on to BattleLauncher. Working with the demos is a bit complicated but with BattleLauncher you can at least skip the hassle of working with the cryptic demo.cmd file..
Here's my site: http://www.battlelauncher.com. Give it a spin, maybe you'll like it. You can even combine it with Fraps, as a lot of people do. :)

Is there not anyway that you can make that more simple?....
Call me stupid but I didnt get any of what you said on how to make the BF2 Recorder work. Though I really would like to be able to record moment in BF2, I dont get how to make it work.
Can anyone help me with this¿

the steps, fire up a singleplayer game, open console, type
demo.recorddemo <name>
to record a game
(example: demo.recorddemo Senap)
demo.stoprecording
to stop recording. you will now have a bf2demo file with the recorded footage. use the steps on the first post to work with it.

The file will be saved to <bf2folder>\mods\bf2\Demos. That usually defaults to C:\Program files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Demos.
BattleLauncher will pick up the files automatically from this folder, i.e. they will show up in the filelist automatically.
The file has a bf2demo extension, like Senap.bf2demo for instance.

Would the above tip work for LAN games? Me and my friend want to mess about with stuff, but can't figure out how to record our antics.
For the life of me i cant get this to work. Im dying to make a movie but i use Windows XP 64-bit. Will this not work on 64bit software? This directions are so simple and im just leaning towards its not supported!
Can anyone tell it that they got this to work with Windows 64bit OS

I cant get this to work :( I can record. I see my 2 files in my demo folder. But I can not get it to play. I type demo.cmd mydemo "name of demo" mydemo -def "name of cam file" . I get a error message every time. The step I didn't do was this one
1.Download ftp://largedownloads.ea.com/pub/misc/demo.cmd and place this in both of these folders.
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo\mods\bf2
The reason I skipped this is for one this is for the battlefield demo right? Second when I try to download, there is no file to download, just a long text page. Am suppose to copy and past that in the C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 \mods\bf2 folder? I know its probably something small I am over looking. Just can't see what it is.

I don't think anyone that knows how to use battlefield recorder is monitoring this thread, I asked my question long ago as others after and no one has offered any help or suggestions.

Do you know how to fix some of the problems we are having or now anyone that might so we too can start to enjoy the battlefield recorder. And no you can not rewind. I read this in another post someone suggested to EA to put this in the new patch, and EA reply and said there is no way to rewind.

Actually this is quite simple if you really read it. It's a shame there is no easy way to have sound though.
My question is this: Can you change the location of where the file is written? I'm running short on room on my C drive.
just take the file from the c drive ( i have a D dive too ) and put it there?
