I've got this crash to desktop thing & it's driving me mad. I can't play for more than 5 mins on my main pc but it runs fine on my 2nd.

main pc :
Dell Dimension 8300 P4 3.2Ghz, 256mb ATI Radeon 9800XT, 2gb RAM, SB Live

2nd pc :
Dell Dimension 8200 P4 2Ghz, 128mb ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, 2Gb Ram, SB live

I've tried all the fixes I've heard of for this...

- Increasing the AGP aperture to 256mb (128mb default)
- changing AGP to x4 from x8
- Running it at lower resolutions
- Tried playing in windowed mode
- Running with fast writing off
- Increased my vitual memory to 3gb (was 2gb)
- Reseated both my Gfx card and RAM
- Stress tested RAM and got no errors
- Done a full reformat and clean install
- Updated all my drivers to latest version including mobo.
- Tried changing 5.6 drivers for 5.1
- Tried Omega drivers
- Done all windows updates

The only fixes I've heard of but not done is ruduce my FSB or CPU speed, or adjust my voltage for RAM and CPU - neither of which I can do on a Dell because I can't change them in the BIOS.

Has anyone got anything else I could try please (getting desparate here!) that's worked for them, or even something they think I've missed?

Thanks for the help ;)

wow good effort anyway, but surely its a bf2 problem because this is happening to millions of ppl, and ATI's site says they are working with EA to resolve the issue (i think im right). i have tried most of the things you did, (9800 128mb pro xxl) but they dont seem to make any difference.

the demo ran fine for me, never seen this error (random crash to desktop) before now. same for you? let us know how you get on, ill do the same

SOMEONE FIND THE SOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!

Dang dude, you've done it all. I have a friend who has an Nvidia card, he managed to figured out that some certain direct X patch that was created like five years ago fixed his problem. Now you have a completely different card from a diff company, but you might consider doing a google on dirext X updates in relation to your vid card in relation to BF2 even if you have direct x 9.0c because there may be some direct X file that could help you.

That's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that you haven't tried. And you've pretty much done it all.

i had crashes to desktop happening every map i played, i fixed it by raising my sound quality settings from medium to high. also make sure the sound driver is set to "hardware.

hope it fixes it for you too.

I have an ATI 9800XT and mine runs fine with the 5.6 drivers

To test.. try lowering your memory speed in bios so your memory isnt running at its full speed. This is a problem I have with BFV and BF1942. Sometimes in BF2. But not anymore.

If that solves the problem then you now know you need to buy faster memory.

I run PC4000(500mhz) memory in my comp but the memory is only running at 400mhz as my cpu is 400mhz.

If I run PC3200 (400mhz) memory at 400mhz I crash to desktop.

Seems to be a problem when running memory at it's highest speed.

:)

I've tried putting it on hardware, it lasts a little longer but the sound stutters badly. I'll put it up to high and see if it makes a difference.

I used Driver Cleaner between all driver changes but it hasn't helped :(

I would like to try this but in the BIOS the memory speed is locked off and I can't alter it. The only option I have is to alter AGP Aperture size.

I'll give this a go. Are you running a LCD or CRT Monitor?

Can you change the CPU front side bus speed in BIOS? You change the cpu fsb/memory ratio.

I have the same problem! I have also tried out a lot of the things i have found on the other forums!

http://crazyfive.de/error.jpg

My Pc:

Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz
1.00GB RAM

Radeon 9800 XT

My BF2 Setting:

1024*768 high
also tried:

800*600 medium and low but the same problem appears!
In this forum there was such a problem and they fixed it but i don't know how!

This i have tried too: "Formated my computer, changed settings in the BIOS, chipset settings.. game quality settings, graphic card settings. I've also tryed changing pagin file settings (virtual memory) as i've seen in other forums for help. I have updated all my drivers, directX and graphic card driver." and also i have made Sound to high or hardware or software and high medium NOTHING!!!!!!!! So now i have mailed EA and i am waiting for an answer! When u guy which has the same problem mail to EA too maybe they work faster on a patch!

A memory problem. Try increasing your allocated swapfile size and run a memory test.

But mainly, it's just the game, not much to do.

right click on your computer>options>advanced>performance tab. there u can change your swap file. but I had the same problem with the memory.dll error and if using maximum 3GB in swapfile size aint enough then nothing is heh. it's the game and ea who sucks really. best shot is to wait for their patch I guess..

Have the same problem also but I think I got it working (Only played on 3 server a couple rounds a piece to test it)

1. Uninstall BF2 (delete directory and temp files)

2. Uninstall 5.6 Drivers

3. Reboot

4. Use driver cleaner from http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745

5. Reboot

6. try these tweak drivers from guru3d http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1098

7. reinstall BF2

8. Play Game (Fingers crossed)

PS

I also tried this before the aboved steps

I've done it all you name it. It crashes back to desktop everytime i start the program.

It seems almost as if BF2 wants you to get higher quality video cards yet they have nothing but errors. My self and a lot of people I know seem to have no problem with older videocards like the 9550 or the 9600XT. but for some reason many people with cards better than that seem to have tons of issues.

Please!!!! If ANYONE has a sollution for this.... PLEASE!!!! you can be the GOD of many gamers:mad: :D

I have the same problem with the crash to desktop issue... It only happens to me when I install a new patch... Its ****ing me off... How does updating from 1.02 to 1.03 make it crash whenever I start it... The 1.12 patch is a crock of S*** due to that BF2CDkeycheck.exe error...
Does anyone elses BF2 game work fine with no patches installed or is it just my computer???

almost same here but the fact that i have ATI 9500/9700 - is the ATI radeon the cause of trouble?

does the game work well on Nvidia?

maybe it is subtile illigal video card competition or just lazy lads from EA games who can't make the game run well on all platforms.

off topic - we all blame EA for the lack of support and endless trouble with the great games they make. (i.e C&C generals ; BF 2 and you may continue the list...)

single channel ? dual channel? - what do you mean? I have 2 memory modules should i remove one of them? I have normal PC 2700 512 and 256 Mbytes.
