I am using an ATI 9550(I believe) with 256 ram and I just upgraded my computer by adding 512 mb of ram which makes it 1gb of ram and it is awesome. There is no staggering to wait at the begging of the game. The maps load fast and I can join right away instead of waiting. There is just no comparsion. 1BG of ram should be recommended for this game.

Finally got around to trying BF2 at a friends place and was instantly hooked. I purchased BF2 + Special Forces and had no problems installing.
That said, the game starts up fine, but whenever I try to create a singleplayer game it instantly crashes to desktop after saying "Starting server". I have tried patching to v1.12, and even changing my drivers from Omega's to the newest ATI catalyst drivers.
My computer specs are as follows:
P4 3.0ghz
Radeon 9600XT
1024meg ram
Windows XP
Anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it? I feel like I've tried everything -- even tried disabling hyperthreading like someone suggesting earlier in the thread to no avail. The game crashes at the same spot every time and in both BF2 and in Special Forces.

My system is only 9 months old and I ran into major probs with the new patch. I tried EVERYTHING at least twice, drivers, game reloads etc. Finally I just said F#@K it and did a complete OS(XP PRO) reload making sure I had all of the latest drivers first. Once the pc was back up and running on the web, run- DO NOT WALK- to the windows updates and update EVERYTHING for the OS before loading any video drivers. Could be as much as 100mb or more of os updates. Once that is done then load video drvrs, I did not go to 5.13 due to SpecOps prob, stayed with 5.12 then loaded game(s) and patch. Since then no probs. NONE! It is definitely worth the time to do this if all else fails.

I am having a very strange issue. I have a Radeon 9700 pro (no overclocking, actually have an aftermarket heatsink/fan that is the size of the card!) on an AMD 2.somethingish ghz(i'll get exact specs when i go home), 1 gig of RAM.
I was playing BF2 fine on low settings for about a month and out of nowhere began to receive two different problems.
1.) At some point while playing (either loading, or after 2 hours) the screen will get COMPLETELY distorted, picture high resolution multicolored ASCII characters. The game is still running and I can hit ESC and quit out to the desktop where my desktop looks like that as well until I reboot.
2.) Completely random reboots w/o a BSOD (it is not set to auto-reboot). This also happens when not playing BF2, but this just began with problem #1.
Things to note:
System temperature: 39 deg Celsius
CPU Temp : 55 deg Celsius
Overheating doesn't seem to be an issue
Video card seems to be seated properly
RAM never has been a problem in nearly 2 years
Relatively fresh installation of WinXP
I intend to run a memory test and begin troubleshooting more advanced when I get home. Can anyone shed any light?

Ok here is the solution to my CTD problem; it crashes right when you start up and blink black a couple times before doing it.
My solution was setting my refresh rate to 85; it was previously 75 and 70 but those do not seem to work with 1.21 anymore. So just mess around with your monitor settings and make sure they have the right drivers if they need them at all.

Everything was fine before 1.2 I thought 1.21 was the fix...it was not.

I believe the problem has been fixed. I noticed that it only began when I installed 1.2.1 on the old machine and it occurred again once I swapped in a new hard drive (with a known good configuration) as soon as 1.2.1 was installed. I surmised that since it was a video problem that 1.2.1 was conflicting with my ATI Catalyst drivers (current), so on a lark I took someones advice from these boards, cleaned out my drivers and installed omega drivers. I played for a solid 2-3 hours with no problems whatsoever, let us just hope it continues!

- ctd prob with 1.21, trying to install Euro Force.
- today I was succesful at downloading Euro Force. But it would not be installed because it needed bf2 to be in version 1.21 (which I had patched a couple of times onto the game).
So now I have bf2, patched to 1.21, but it's not 1.21.
How did that happen? (retorical question)

Your not doing anything wrong, your maxed out on your pipelines that you can obtain, with an agp card. As long as your system is stable and not crashing to desktop, or rebooting, don't change a dam thing!! You can play the game at 50-70 fps, be happy. Unless you upgrage your video card and mobo, becaue you need pci express, then i say frag on mofo. Read some of the posts above, a lot of US can't even play it anymore so be happy.

Yeah, the only agp card that I'm aware of that has 16 pixel pipelines is the x800xt. I have the AIW version, but above poster shouldn't upgrade an AGP card if he already has an x800. *edit: his sig says he has an x850, but his post says x800?
The x800xt AIW, though...sweet. And the price was right, right before pci-e became mainstream. I will *ahem* let you early adopters work through the first couple of versions/standards/directx 10 compatible iterations of pci-e before I drop a bundle on a total system upgrade.

I'e just come back to ATI after having had a 7800gt for some time. I'm now the proud (Kind of) owner of an x1900xtx but it's giving all kinds of problems in BF2. The most annoying is this texture flashing problem which seems to affect all windows and doors. It's like the texture flashes between black and the real texture. This occured occasionaly on the 7800gt but on the ATI card it's unbearable. It's so bad on levels like Dalian Plant that I almost can't play them because it's so distracting.
Does anyone know if this is a driver issue or a BF2 issue? It didn't happen on the 7800gt so I assume it's something that can be fixed by someone.
Has anyone found a work-around?? I don't mind playing it on lower settings if it gets rid of the flickering but so far even running it on full low doesn't seem to work.
Any help appreciated!

the fact is that EA refuses to fix the issues with Radeon ATI cards. Its not the cards or drivers. they work great in all other games like HL2, Doom, COD, and others.

Hey, I've got a Radeon 9800 Pro and I'm running the 5.6 Cat driver. The game runs absolutely great save for the constant dumping to the desktop.
It's quite unbearable, I really would like it to work, I'm not particularily sure what the issue is. Sometimes I can't play for a minute and it will dump to the desktop sometimes I can play for twenty minutes. It's really aggravating.
On occasion I actually get error messages, I should write it down exactly but it's something along the lines of "Memory deallocating..." and it wants to know if you'd like to "Try Again" "Cancel" "Quit"... I dunno, it's driving me mad...
I was wondering what your "fix" is. I'm willing to try anything at the moment.
Cheers

Remember most of these crashes are caused by the squad texture being missing for squad 0( check the dmp files in your BF2 folder in documents and settings ), hopefully they'll fix this in the next patch

the fact is that EA refuses to fix the issues with Radeon ATI cards. Its not the cards or drivers. they work great in all other games like HL2, Doom, COD, and others.
The very reason im not getting a x1900 but a 7900 ...

that sounds awful. you did set your sound options to "software" in the game, correct? Ok...other possibles:
possible problems (in descending order): bad install of BF2; bad drivers/windows interface/.dll's; defective stick of memory, an HD issue (unlikely, but possible--I was tinkering around with some legacy HD's in an old build and it kept rebooting unexpectedly, found out the pin was broken when the HD wouldn't talk when I put it into a USB enclosure), or it could be a PSU issue.
Solutions are to reinstall BF2; run a memcheck program on your RAM; visually inspecting your HD; reinstall windows; or "rent" a PSU using your credit card at best buy, and if it is the PSU, return it and buy one from newegg.
You should post your problem under "support"-->"tech center" and ask for other fixes, also see what other folks have done to fix their problems.

I've opened up and clean the internals, reinstalled Audigy 2 ZS driver from Creative Official, unistalled and "erased" alot on my harddrive, ran a disk defrag, reinstalled bf2, downloaded 1.3 (Not incremental) and installed. This is to install Catalyst, Forceware, and any 3rd Party Video Drivers
1. Uninstall video drivers and control Panel/CCC.
2. If you have Crap Cleaner run it and scan for issues and fix those issues (Crap Cleaner fixes the issues).
3. Roboot to Safe mode.
4. Run the Driver Cleaner Pro and the tool Cab Cleaner that is in the Driver Cleaner Pro. For ATI cards, when running the Driver Cleaner clean everything except the ATI IGP.
5. Boot your system back to the desktop.
6. Now windows will tell you that there are some hardware found and would want to run a check on drivers. Windows is a plug & play Operating System so every time you add a new device it will give you a new hardware found prompt. To prevent this you must remove the hardware or let windows try to find the driver if you try to cancel it, it will just show up on the next boot so try to install it even if you don't have the drivers windows will just put it on your system without a driver. It won't hurt your system and you won't get the NEW HARDWARE FOUND PROMPT AGAIN. ** Simple Talk: So just let windows find the driver. Once it does that it will tell you no drivers found (that is what you want). Make are sure to check the box to where you do not want the prompt to show up on your next reboot. This will happen every time you uninstall old drivers.
7. Install whatever video drivers you want. If you are having problems make sure to install the most updated WDM Drivers.
8. Reboot system
9. Run your Crap Cleaner and scan for issues. Fix the issues again. Then reboot again.
10. Defrag your system.
If you are using modded drivers and want to go back to using the Catalyst Drivers/Forceware Drivers just follow the instructions above.
DriverCleaner (http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html)
Crap Cleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/)

Last time I had major vid probs, shortly after BF2 hit the streets, I just bit the bullit and completely re-inst my OS from the ground up, making sure all Bios, system drivers, inf etc files were completely up to date and then running ALL MS XP OS updates, THEN installing Norton AV06 and then FINALLY installing BF2 using original CD's and then applying Full patches. Since then absolutely ZERO crash probs just periodic disconnects due to my CRAPPY ISP.
BTW - I started with a XT850 and then upgraded to the X1800XT couple of months ago, best move ever...

Those p4's are notorious for heat problems (I've got a 3.0 E). Are you sure you're getting adequate cooling? Is your PSU up to snuff? I imagine that x1900xt + that watt hog of a processor are sucking up alot of juice.

500W should be plenty. You're right--taking the sides off and pointing a fan towards the innards while playing would tell you pretty soon if its a heat issue.
Other recommendations:
ww.techpowerup.com/atitool/, and download atitool. set it up to log your gpu.
also dl and install speedfan, (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) and set it up to log your temps.
76C AFTER you've already restarted indicates that it may--MAY--have been in the low 90's when it crashed, meaning you may need to get in there with a can of compressed air and clean out those dustbunnies a little better.
Good luck.

Stupid question, but did you run a driver cleaner ? Is it getting enough power?
A minimum 550 Watt (750 for CrossFire™) or greater power supply with two 2x3-pin PCIe® power connectors is required.
For enhanced performance with ATI Overdrive™, a power supply with one 2x3-pin and one 2x4-pin PCIe® power connector is required
Certified power supplies are strongly recommended. Refer to http://ati.amd.com/CertifiedPSU for a list of Certified products
If you have a good P.S. & thats not your problem exchange that card for a new one !

Cheers
