I'm going to be blunt

What the heck is this? Why does it take so freaking long on my comp? Are there any ways to make it take less time?

Takes a long time for me too, no idea why though.

maybe because you have the minimum requirements which means the game ran at 640x400 with everything off or minimum.

Thats why they call it minimum system requirements.

Part of the problem is people are trying to run this with all the eyecandy , the thing is most folks cant afford the candy or just havent upgraded yet.

nope, same problem here.takes me sometimes 4-5 minutes to verify client data.

all my settings are as low as they can go but it still takes as much time, if not more than the "loading map" portion does.....

45 seconds to load everything
2+ minutes to verify client data
10 seconds to join after actually clicking "join now"

Not to mention it takes 10-20 seconds to log on to my account everytime I load BF2.

Not to mention playing on medium-large ranked servers = more lag than I've ever wanted to deal with.

Something is seriously wrong with the net code, EA's servers, PB, or all 3 of them combined.

Hell, today I loaded a map in like 10 seconds, and then waited 2+ minutes to vrify, and tehn 10 seconds to join.

I'm not too sure what goes on when it verifies. It's not using any processor, nor is the amont of memory changing, and it's not transferring any data to/from the internet. The hard disk light is on though,i think Punkbuster is checking all the files. Probably shouldn't be this slow though...

Verifying client data took 2+ minutes for me once, but now it takes about 1-2 minutes. I just sit there tapping my fingers to the music playing (not that it's the best but hey :p) or day dreaming while it loads :p

Clicking join is instant joining for me.

Loading the map is maybe 20 seconds, give or take a few.. never really timed it.

Hopefully the patch will fix this, I hate waiting that several minutes.

logging into account server when i first start the game ~~15 seconds

loading map ~~ 20-30 seconds

verifying client data ~~ anywhere from 2 minutes-4 minutes

finally getting the game up and running ~~ priceless

Yes, its extremely frustrating waiting it to load for an eternity. WTH would they be verifying for sooooo long? NOTHING! HA! :wall:

I decided to open up the task manager and watch it while BF2 was loading. What I noticed is that after loading the map, during the verify data the BF2 application becomes "Not Responding" in task manager for about 1 -2 minutes. Once it goes to "Running", the verification completes in about 2seconds. This is the case on three different computers. I have dual monitor setup on all three puters so I was able to monitor this without breaking out of the game.

Just thought I would throw this out there.

Mine takes ages,so in that respect you guys waitin 2 minutes should feel lucky. My teamate earlier tonight was capturing an objective flag while i was waiting to get my client verified, whatever the f**k that means.Could be because i haven't updated punkbuster?(Wish i knew how...)

I bought an extra 512MB RAM and no more long waiting time for "verifying client data"..and load times are generally 5 times faster than before.

Not to be rude, but I don't think this post was asking everybody to post their load times. He's just asking if anybody happens to know why it takes so long.

Basically, that is PunkBuster scanning your computer. If you start a single player game or join a non-punkbuster server, it will take about ~3 seconds to "Verify Client Data". It would seem as if PunkBuster would scan your memory looking for certain strings, patterns, etc that would be caused by any types of 3rd-party programs. I do believe though, that it scans your hard drive for something. On my old, slow computer, it took about 3 minutes to verify client data. It had 1 gig of SDRAM (not even ddr), and a 40 gig hard drive. My new computer has 4 gigs of ddr2 sdram and a 250 gig SATA hard drive, and takes about as long. It also has about 6x the processor power, so I think it is due in part that there is either more memory to scan, more hard drive to scan, or both.

Whatever the case, I believe that it can be made much more effiicent, and I believe it will have much revision in the future, once the game settles down with some patches, and major bugs are worked out.

3.2 P4, 1 gig DDR 400, 200 WD SATA caviar... 3-4 mins to verify. When I spawn, there's no chance I can apply for commander, all the vehicles are gone etc etc. I know to those who don't have this problem it probably sounds petty, but if this goes on for too long it really is gonna start ruining the game for me. Please take note EA that this is a bigger issue than it seems!

PS: First post.. hello all!

Mine takes about 20 secs with 2GB ram.

I think it does have to do with PunkBuster. I remember in BF:V, I after I would join in the map and pick my class, I would be motionless or be stuttering for a minute. It was the punkbuster checking thing. The punkbuster went into effect after you are in game. After I bumped up to 1GB ram from 512MB, the checking took only a few secs and no stuttering after I picked my class.

why do you guys not take as long as me?

i have 1GB ram, and it takes between 10-15 mins to verify, and i'm usually kicked out of a server before i can play.

yeah same for me, Athlon 64 3500+, 1 gig corsair 2-2-2-5 timings, 120gig 7200rpm, Geforce 7800gt, Audigy zx2 platnium.. around 20 secs to load, at least 2-4 mins after that before I can actully start playing, HD light going whole time it "verifys", tryed making some room moving files and stuff to my 250gig and uninstalling games i dont play, then defraging, but still... no change :-(

Yea, I agree with xjake88x.

I’ve noticed that it locks memory, other programs, and controls to an extent. This could be to prevent people from switching things off then back on after the verification.

I had a 3500+ but after I upgraded to a dual core Opteron 170 my times were essentially halved. So I think your processor does speed it up to a large portion. After all scans are all on your CPU, makes sense.

Since were all touting our specs I’ll jump on the band wagon!

Nvidia MSI NX 7800GTX PCIe
MSI Neo 4 Platinum SLI
AMD Opteron 170 Dual Core socket 939
OCZ Titanium DDR 400 2 Gb @ 2-3-2-5
Western Digital 180Gb HDD SATA 2

My 2cts would be that its a memory issue, although there seem people with 2gb that also have problems. Inefficient process coding is another prime suspect.

I was at about 5 minutes with 768mb.

Then installed a 1GB for a total of 1.7gb and verify went to a comfortable 10-20seconds.

This is on P4 2.4ghz, and simple HDD, ATI Radeon 9600pro 256mb so not the fastest machine out there, and am always on time to grab a tank or copter if the game starts (read: join = instant).

Look for Linux or Linux64 servers.

The MD5 checksum is turned off on those servers, so you have no client data to verify.

You can find these by looking for the Penguin or the "64" symbol in the server browser.

Maps tend to load faster anyway with Linux servers.

Yup its slow, not to worry 1.2 will optimise that. I found defragementing my harddrive made it a bit faster. I use norton system works to defragement, if u use the one windows has defrag a few times to get anything good.

verifying client data is when the server is checking the map you've loading to make sure that it's not different compared to theirs, eg . modded map, boot you.

I have the same problems sometimes but one day i was messing around and I fixed the problem. I re-retreived my account and it hasnt taken as long to verify client data. It is worth a try. I do it alot. But this will reset your controls.

Not to be rude, but I don't think this post was asking everybody to post their load times.
It's not rude. It helps people to figure out what hardware configurations will verify client data faster. Like this:

On my old, slow computer, it took about 3 minutes to verify client data. It had 1 gig of SDRAM (not even ddr), and a 40 gig hard drive. My new computer has 4 gigs of ddr2 sdram and a 250 gig SATA hard drive, and takes about as long.

Basically, that is PunkBuster scanning your computer.
No, it isn't. It's BF2 running MD5 hash checks on your game files.

This topic was already beat to death in a previous forum topic:
http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48182

More RAM helps. (2 Gb is optimal for BF2)
Defragging your drive, and maintaining at least 15% free space will help.
A faster hard disk helps. (snipelfritz (http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/member.php?u=4507) has a 5400 RPM drive).

Look for Linux or Linux64 servers.

The MD5 checksum is turned off on those servers, so you have no client data to verify.

You can find these by looking for the Penguin or the "64" symbol in the server browser.
That will solve the problem completely for anyone who's having a severe problem. No other solutions are available, so pony up for some hardware, or play on servers that don't verify.

I think there is more to it than pure horsepower. I recently upgraded from WinXP to WinXP Pro. Under XP, verify times were 2 minutes. I never knew this was a problem. Under XP Pro the verify time is 8-10 minutes - this is bad....

Sorry if I bumped this thread but

It has absolutely nothing to do with hardware...

I have
AMD Athlon 64 3800+
1gb Samsung Ram(crappy)
160gb 7200RPM Western Digi. HDD
BFGtech GeForce 7600GT 256MB Pci-E

It used to take me about 10-15 seconds to verify and after I reformatted it began to take about 5-10 minutes, When it is loading for me, it doesn't do a thing, the entire computer locks up and the music plays but it skips every now and then, the task manager says "Not Responding" and there is little to no activity. Once it kicks back into the game it takes about 10 seconds to verify.

This might have something to do with checking for No-CD cracks, since my friend doesn't have this problem anymore after switching, I however, still need the CD.

I think that most people have this problem. I know I sure do. And I love how some in the past ***** (in other threads) that people don't have enough memory or their system specs are low. I have a Dual Core 2.8, 2GB memory, SATA 10k drive, and a Radeon X600. Not the fastest machine on the planet but shoot it's no slouch.

first time being on totalbf2 in a long while, kinda stopped playing bf2 but i guess i can help you guys out.

in some cases long VCD times can be a symptom of a larger problem, mainly after a harddrive error. check my other thread
