View Full Version : The All Seeing Eye
If you are fed up with the in-game browser already then you may be interested in this new fix for the <a href="http://gamesdomain.yahoo.com/ase/register" target="_blank">All Seeing Eye</a> which allows you to connect directly to servers. ASE is the world's most popular game server browser and is a great way to find and join games more easily. Previously this wasn't possible, so thanks go to <a href="http://www.digitalsoftware.se/" target="_blank">Digital Software</a> for providing the fix.
All the documentation and necessary files can be found in the .rar download, which you can grab <a href="http://www.digitalsoftware.se/BF2_Connector.v1.0.rar">here</a>.

Does this work with Xfire?Yes, make sure it loads BF2_Connector.exe
It doesn't work at all, i did everything what the readme said. And it starts up the game and i need to login and thats it...nothing ever happend.That's because you need to learn to read, it said in the readme once you double clicked on the server, you load up the game, you go to MULTIPLAYER, press "JOIN IP" and type in "BF2" for the IP. It's easier when you actually have the game loaded.

Great piece of software (both ASE and this BF2 Connector).
Location filters (no more pingin' the servers in China, Canada,Texass etc), fast refreshing, good/fast interface..
Grrreat.
Hint for DICE/EA, FPS (first person shooters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-person_shooter)) gamers generally find ASE very usefull and many developers have managed to overcome the huge technical issue of launching a game with +join parameter in order to take advantage of All Seeing Eye:s many USEFULL features...

So how do we Point Xfire to the .exe?
1. download this http://www.digitalsoftware.se/BF2_Connector.v1.0.rar and unzip both files into the bf2 directory or where ever else you want ( you just might have to change some directory settings in the later steps). Go to the bf2connector config file and change the your directory to this: BF2.ExePath="C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" your may be different but change it if it is.
2. go to xfire in program files and open xfire_games scroll down to the bf2 game settings which is under [4578] and change all the info to this:
[4578]
LongName=Battlefield 2
ShortName=bf2
Icon=bf2.ico
LauncherDirKey=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electro nic Arts\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\InstallDir
LauncherExe=BF2_Connector.exe
LauncherPasswordArgs=+password %UA_GAME_HOST_PASSWORD%
LauncherNetworkArgs=+isInternet 1 +joinServer %UA_GAME_HOST_NAME%:%UA_GAME_HOST_PORT% %UA_LAUNCHER_PASSWORD_ARGS%
Launch=%UA_LAUNCHER_EXE_PATH% +restart 1 %UA_LAUNCHER_NETWORK_ARGS%
ServerStatusType=BF2
CanBeUpForGame=TRUE
InGameRenderer=D3D9
note that xfire is opening up the bf2connector that is in the bf2 folder you may have to change it if you installed elsewhere.
3. When you click join it doesn't take you directly to the server loading screen. It will open your game and you will still have to log in then go to multiplayer and type bf2 in the connect to ip option. Then it will load your buddies server. This takes awhile
However, you can speed it up by logging into your profile in game before you alt tab out and connect to the server with xfire. The just type bf2 in the server.
Strikeri

Yeah this is great and all. There isn't much benefit from this however. You still have to enter the awful server browser, even if just to type that BF2 to join ip. Yeah sure it saves the trouble of typing ip manually somewhere and from there in the game (although i use filter by typing partial name of the server, don't have to write ip down).
Main point of working ASE filter is that you would line up for those full servers, so you don't have to constantly try to join full server. It would join the server as soon as a slot would open, like in BF1942. In this case, you double click server from ASE -> open slot appears -> game starts -> you log in -> you go to server browser to write join ip "BF2". And guess if that slot is available still, well it hasn't been in about 30 seconds. :)
I hope DICE gets that parameter joining -thing working and patched to the game as quickly as possible.

well the best thing to do is to be already logged in and alt tabbed out of game so you connect it to the server without having to endure the long log in time.....

I've been using ASE for about 4 years now. Love it.
But I con't get this thing to work. I know I did everything just as it says.
But I keep getting "You cannot join a server from ASE" then a black DOS window comes up and says "enter path to your BF2 in the inin file here"
When I go and open the ini file it shows this
BF2.ExePath="C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe
[Path]
BF2.ExePath=PUTH_PATH_TO_YOUR_EXEFILE_HERE although I deleted that HERE line and saved the change. It keeps coming back?

3. click connect and it should work. Just remember to go to join ip and type bf2. Its best to just log in then alt tab out and click connect to avoid the log in crap.
Sweet thanks, I just am unclear on the last step (#3)
T-raV

the connect button doesn't directly take you to the server loading screen. You first must log in, then you have to go to multiplayer/connect to ip and type bf2 as the server ip. You can go ahead and log in and type bf2 in the connect to ip then alt tab out. Use xfire to connect to your buddies server and then alt tab back in game and click connect.

hmm i dunno make sure you saved all the files you modified and make sure you are linking the exe's to the right directories. Check the bf2connector file by clicking on it and making sure it doesn' say plz specify directory if not you are fine. It should say something about an ip not specified. Also make sure this line in the xfire folder
LauncherDirKey=HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electro nic Arts\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\InstallDir
LauncherExe=BF2_Connector.exe
directs you to where you extracted the bf2connector and the config file too.

Yeah, this is a little Ghey. The whole point for ASE is the ease of use. This doesnt save any time or hassle at all. You still have to login to bf2 etc etc.
All you need to do, is to remember part of the name of your favourite server, ie FREDSSERVER and type it into the filter box and press enter. Presto, all the servers that match this name appear as if by magic ! No need to browse the entire world servers.
Just wait until the first patch, I think they are going to add +join support to the bf2.exe so ALL the third pary game browser apps can work.

Yup, that's what I do. All the ranked servers here in New Zealand are provided by the ISP Xtra, so I just type 'xtra battlefield' and it comes up with all of the xtra servers.

let hope its soon i love ASE and the 'wait for slot to open feature... might mean i actually manage to get into a european ranked server at last withough shouting at the clunky browser and waiting 15 secs for it to refresh or move a page down no to mention a lack of proper filters for pings and countries...

The fact you have to do part of it manually still means slots are still gone by the time oyu get there ?

Mine runs std BF2 and SF ...spend a little time on it and it WILL work and it is far superior to the ingame browser. all you need to do is alter the filters.txt file.. for info on how to do this follow the link below.

never ever since ive used ASE from the begining of my bf days have i recieved and invite to play, there is an option i think and when you turn it off... no more invites
besides even if i did ASE is so superior to gamespy and aeons ahead of the abysmal ingame browser that its worth a couple of invites.

If anyone's still having trouble getting bf2 to work with ASE do the following:
1. Go to the Filter menu and select Configure Games...
2. Selected Battlefield 2 from Installed Games section
3. Add the following to the end of the Program Location:
+playerName <you player name here> +playerPassword <your password here>
... so your full program location should look something like this:-
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.EXE" +playerName CyclicUK +playerPassword nottelling
4. Click OK to save the changes
5. Connect to a game server like you always do on ASE!!!
Hope this helps!
