First, Try this.
Place the patch in your desktop and run it from there. If that still don't work, then you are having registry problems. This is how you fix it:
1.Go To Start > Run > Type "regedit" (without quotes)
2. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Games\Battlefield 2
3. Then right click on the right hand window and go on NEW string value, then enter InstallDir for the string name and for the value enter D:\GAMES\Battlefield 2
(or whatever your BF2 Path is)

dont work too
@Al_Capwn
heh you could have least given me credit for this fix since you took it from my post on the planetbattlefield forums ;)
but this fix is for the error "Can't find install folder for battlefield 2"
----
to fix this prob you need to do the following
(below is done by Ragnar 11651173)
Execute Patcher, Choose language, wait for welcome screen, don't hit continue.
go to your documents folder and to this location:
c:\documents\YOUR USERNAME\local settings\temp
and look for a folder which looks like {BLAH....} lots of numbers and chars. Go into that folder structure and copy the files in it (e.g. patch.exe, all the files) to a folder where you can execute them (e.g. create a dir named C:\temp)
then open a commandpromt (type "cmd" in run/execute at startmenu) and go to your new created folder with the patchdata. Execute the with the following line (edit to your installfolder location of course):
patch.exe "c:\FolderWhereBF 2Is"
Watch the magic happen.

I had a different fault - "Can't find installation directory" and a slightly different solution. Al Capwn pointed me in the right direction.
1.Go To Start > Run > Type "regedit" (without quotes)
2. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\EA Games\Battlefield 2
My first problem was there was no battlefield 2 key entry in my registry under Electronic Arts/EA Games; it was under DICE and had just a "default" keys with no values.
BUT, there was the Battlefield 2 Demo key entry in the place Al Capwn mentioned ( installed the demo a couple weeks ago and removed it when I got the full version), so what the heck. I renamed the key Battefield 2, then I modified the binary data, removing the line that said "Demo" and changed the installation directory to where I had installed it. Ran the patch again from the desktop and it worked. Now to see if the game will still run!

That is so fricken awesome. That made my day. Thanks for copying this to this forum, now I and probably many others can play BF2 again :)

so I'm not sure what's supposed to happen after you run that command. Something happens, and then what? Close that window, close the patcher that you didn't use and then launch the game? I tried that, it never patched me. Can you fill me in on what happens after I type patch.exe "C:\BFTemp"
?
please? Thanks!
[edit oh I see this is for a different fix. I got patch failed error, but when I go to the registry, I have an installdir with the proper folder structure. :s
@Feenix
i never had the problem with patching failed so cant help other than post what has fixed the problem for others.
The fix where you have to edit the registry is for if you get the error "Can't find install folder for battlefield 2"

Yeah, It worked for me, the unique thing I had to do is remove the last "\" after the installdir and patch again (I thought the problem would be the file and i got it from 6 servers  :hmm: )

I couldn't get mine to work orginally, so I complete de-istalled BF2, cleaned out the registry (using some freebie program) reinstalled BF2 and now the patch seems to be taking.
BTW I don't have BF2 installed in the default area.
Anyway just one way to fix it I guess. Patch is updating now will let you know how it goes!

intresting, it needs at least a gig of space or it can't patch it says...
Try deleting some things on your HD to get at least 2 gigs free and patch again, i used the cmd patch suggestion that they had above, and it told me there was insufficient space. I deleted some stuff and it's patching now.

This is ridiculous...2GB of free space for a 14MB patch?!?!
I don't have enough space at the moment, so I'm gonna have to wait until monday for some blank DVD-Rs to arrive...That really sucks.
EA need to make their patches better than this.

You peeps need to look at your patch error output, for me its in c:\documents and settings\username\my documents\Battlefield 2\Dmp - patchlog.txt.
My error always read: error ept0009: Invalid Patch File {bla bla} \patch.rtp
I looked around and found its basically a read / write error, either a .rtp file was damaged or corrupt. Thats why some peeps say 'I just downloaded a different .exe and it worked'. It probably did since the .rpt in that extraction was intact. So all it takes is a lucky extraction, again this why some peeps say 'Mine worked on the 10th time'. With upgrading and downgrading to and from 1.01 i got some of these lucky hits, but this time round i was getting nothing but 'patch failed'.
How i fixed it: I downloaded a clean patch file so i hadnt attempted extraction, no writing to history / registry or memory and burnt it to CD. I then extracted, copied and pasted the patch files into a folder on c:\ using the partial install method mentioned above in this thread (run the patch from the disc, stop at welcome screen, go into the temp folder where the contents are extracted). Then i burnt these untouched, extracted patch files to CD. Using the method of updating the game via the command prompt (again mentioned above in this thread) the update was successfull  .
This has worked twice in a row for me now whereas nothing was working before. Its a combination of extraction / read / write errors, so i thought if it cant read + write from my hard drive effectively while patching then i'll try an unchanging data source - a CD :) , if you dont have a burner try a USB key (memory stick  ) if you have one.
You can skip the first stage, burning the exe to CD, and just burn the extracted files, but i wasnt taking any chances. I was at this for 2 days when 1.01 came out, and a full day now for 1.02. Long and a pain in the *** it is but if your getting the 'patch failed' error my guess is youve been at it for some time ;) . For those with the same error line as above this should work.

I was really hoping this would work, but no luck.
Still get that damn "Invalid Patch File" error. When it gets to "mods\bf2\Objects_client.zip" it stays on "Updating..." for 3 minutes (yeah, I've done it so many times by now I actually timed it) and then the error with patch.rtp. It did this before I tried your method, and it still does it from the CD.
This patch is really getting on my nerves. I can't even play on 1.0 without reinstalling now, and I really don't feel like doing that either.
Bleh.

How do I go to the temp folder using cmd? can someone please explain this to me step by step like what exactly to type.
1. Double click the bf2patch_v_102.exe you downloaded, select you country and click Next.
2. Browse to your temp directory e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp and arrange icons by modified (note: you will need hidden folders to be visible - tools > folder options > view)
3. Open the folder with a name similar to {43604D32-1F10-4C64-A8F8-9324E19AF2C2} and copy all the files to C:\Patch (create this folder).
4. Click Start, Run, type CMD and press enter. At the command line type cd c:\patch and press enter. Then type patch.exe "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2" - or where ever you installed it.
The command Window will then display a load of text saying it's applying changes to files etc. It does take a long time to finish though...have registered on this forum and typed this post and it's only just finished.
The command Window will say once it has finished - close it, along with the patch installer and go play Battlefield 2! :D
By the way, this is for the Patching Failed error.

The only other thing i had running in the background when i initially tried to install the patch was RivaTuner....maybe that was the cause? I got it working before i could try to install it with RivaTuner disabled.

HI Middle
I have tried everything I can think of short of Blowing up EA games :) Im running
P4 3.4
MSI neo 875p
2 gig of dual channel matched corsair DDR Ram
Radeon 9800 pro
SATA HDD
WIN XP home SP2
I was fine with patch 1 but now I get this stupid patch error "patch not installed" at the end of the install.
I tried your solution after a complete registry wipe of anything remotely EA sounding and still got in my CMD window the rpt error. I have even downloaded the file from fileplanet now to no avail. So sick of this ****eee. Damned marketing departments in games companys want shooting releasing this crap to us the paying public just so they can turn a $ on an un-tested game!
Yeh lets get the public to pay for their own testing huh! Great idea EA.
Any more ideas anyone? Im at a loss.

i feel u man... :hmm:
What the hell is EA doing...gosh
I found a fix to my problem, hope this helps.
I got the "Patching Failed" error as well.
My problem was disk space. I figured it out this way:
I looked at the error log as Hirogen suggested, which for me was located at
c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Battlefield 2\dmp\
(I'm using windows 2000 and logged in as admin)
The log stated this:
***
error ept0029: Insufficient Storage Space to Apply Patch - You need at least
-1949144798 bytes free.
***
this translates into about 1.8 gigs. I had about 1.57 gigs of free space. I deleted some crappy software and reran the patch and it worked.
Why a 16meg file needs 1.8 gigs of free space to install is beyond me. and why they dont mention this anywhere is also puzzling.
way to go EA.

I've made a concerted effort to fix the "PATCHING FAILED" error that has come up every single time i have run the patch both the 13mb and then again with the 16mb 1.02 patch... I've downloaded from multiple sites, ive tried the registry thing, everything that has been prescribed here, rebooting, reinstalling, and nothing works at all!! Why do the programmers at EA get paid at ALL? Now i'm still stuck with the factory version and a whopping 4 servers to choose from, can someone please help me upgrade? =[

And once reinstallation was done, The PATCH wont work again!!! same problem as before! ARGH!!! EA is really making my blood boil. So does this mean we will have to wait for the next patch!?!? Patch Failed - Pls check the amount of harddrive space you have before going crazy, this is a different error to the one me and everyone else is recieving, check your patch log in the BF2 folder (in Dmp) inside my documents, if its haddrive space the error code is 0029, our error is 0009. Learn to run this patch from the command line and at least locate your patch.log txt file from the .exe installation, they both contain error information that could set you apart from our unsolvable error and get you playing again.
'Unmodified Content' - Your files are not what the server is expecting during the client data check. The reason is youve patched it successfully according to the installer, but its wrong and you havent patched your game properly. If you ran it from the .exe check your log, at the end it will say 1 or two files Invalid. The reason for this is most likely 'Objects_client.zip', if you check your patch log it will say something like 'Warning wpt0036 file not found, however a similar file was found but the content does not match so no update was done'. This can also happen to a random map.zip file, random meaning it changes from installation to installation, if you keep running the patch sooner or later this file will be updated leaving you with 1 Invalid file at the end of a successfull patch, the 'Object_client.zip'. Though no ammount of re-patching has updated the 'Object_client.zip' for me, but feel free to keep trying.
Its important that you use every method avilable to you for patching, the .exe, the partial extract method, the command prompt and running from different directories etc. because you simply might get lucky, and you will be able to post your exact error messages from either .exe run or command line.
So how you do you fix it? You dont. The one method i thought would work was getting a fully patched 'Object_client.zip' from my Bro and replacing it in my directory, this also failed.
Ive come to the conclusion that no matter how many times you install it is corrupt, wether this means the CD/DVD Disc (your drive isnt broke) is corrupt, or just the installation itself. The patch needs to access certain files and read / write to and from them, in the case of the .zip files it has to extract them first, which is why you need x ammount of harddrive space, the 'Objects_client.zip' is 511mb unpatched, this is failing the extraction / read / write process because its corrupt. Yes the patch is unstable (EA cant even be bothered to change one line of code that sez 1.02), but how many times have you downloaded it from different sources and how many times have you ran it from .exe and command line? If the numbers playing 1.02 can find a version that works, chances are you can too. For the reasons above, the only thing that might work for you is a re-formatt of your harddrive and re-installation of windows.
EA do not have clue of how to fix this, and as much as id like to blame them, i dont think its their problem. I think too many people are playing 1.02 for it to be a patch file problem. An EAUK member of staff tried to help me out, the technical support peeps said i should do a clean install and copy everything inside my Bro's patched game directory to mine (Because i mentioned to him i got the Objects_client.zip from my Bro). Now this might work, the registry paths are all intact and hopefully the CD key association with the files too. I'll be trying this out later today. I'll let you guys know how i get on.

Thanks Hirogen look forward to your reply - its good to hear in a sense that even someone with your background is having troubles with this game - All i want to do is play the damn thing - In other words patch the game without any problems and not get kicked everytime when trying to join a server because I've sposed to have unmodified content - your my only hope Hirogen cheers from a fellow gamer

Ive just done some more testing with the md5 error tool. Dont ask me the details but its some kind of file validation check. A clean installation of 1.00 shows no md5 errors / mismatches.
So i did a 'Successfull' patch to 1.02 with the 1 Invalid file 'Objects_client.zip'. Ran the md5 tool again and it picks up an error in the 'Objects_client.zip', as expected. The guy that helped me with these md5 checks says that this is causing the 'Patch Failed', 'Unmodified Content' and the 'Memory Insane' erros (which i also get from time to time if im playing 1.00).
To solve the problem he basically did what im about to do, only easier. I dont have a second drive coz it failed a couple of months ago, and i dont have a spare PC sitting around. He said he installed on another PC, copied the files across and its working fine. So a re-formatt and a re-install of windows etc. would more than likely solve the problem, with this new info im also assuming copying my Bro's patched BF2 files to mine will work. If you have two harddrives or more in your system it might be worth installing to another drive and testing it.
I'll post back later on when ive tested my Bro's copied installation to mine.

By the way, this is for the Patching Failed error.
hi... been having some major problems with the patching BF2 and i cant get it patched. been looking for the error log in Dmp folder but there is none. so i tryed this and i get the "could not find the patch file" message and havent got a clue what im supposed to do next. any1 got the any ideas what im supposed to do next ?

Well, I got it to work after being very insistent.
It finally patched Objects_client.zip, but there was one invalid file (Zatar Wetlands) that I can't get to patch now. This thing is driving me insane.

(or whatever your BF2 Path is)
Well first i had "patching failed" error. But then i free'd up 1.8 gigs(i unistalled BF1942 lol) and it went away, but then it came up with cant find install folder so i tried the solution above, but after i get into the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE, there isnt any Electronics Arts folder! Any ideas guys?

Hi Desperates!
Some cool guy offers the patch without that damn installer.
You have to extract the files and copy them into you BF folder. After that click "patch.exe" located in that folder and it will update the game.

Solves all problems.

Ok so i tried a clean install, removing my Battlefield 2 folder and copying my Bro's working / Patched version over as EA suggested. Joined a server .... and couldnt believe i still got the 'Unmodified Content' error
So out of curiosity i ran the patch from the normal .exe and it said patching was successfull, i looked at the log and again it listed 1 Invalid file 'Objects_client.zip' but passed over it again with the same output 'warning bla bla not found but a similar file was found'. I was totally stunned
Without re-booting after the patch i started the game up and the menu's were slow as hell but i didnt care, i thought why not try a non-punkbuster server? ... So i jumped in a game, every step from loading to join was really slow so when it got to the part where you can join, but kicks you back for unmodified content i thought big deal, its even taking ages to kick me i need a reboot. But i clicked on join and wtf i was in game :hmm: , the squad menu was moving in really slow and the game was choppy as hell but i didnt care, i was actually in on 1.02.
I did a re-boot, changed my audio settings (Disabled EAX etc.) and joined another non-punkbuster game and this time no laggy menus, and sure enough i joined without a problem. I came out and joined a non-EA ranked server with punkbuster enabled and omg it let me join! :D :p . I brought down the command console and checked my PB version, clean install so it was old. It didnt update while i was in but i had other stuff to do so i came out. Ive just tried another ranked server, this time an official EA server and it let me join !!! Checked my PB Ver via the console and it has updated. I think thats my probs solved guys
Sorry for the long story but i didnt want to miss anything out ;) .
Now this might sound really stupid, and if it does work i have to admit my embarrasment of not trying it along with the other 50,000 solutions, but have any of you tried joining a non-punkbuster enabled server? And if you have does it let you? If you havent i suggest you go do that now, if it lets you in then try a punkbuster enabled server. Pls post if what youve tried and if it worked for you or not. I have theory on why this worked for me and why it might work for you, but i'll wait for the responses first, im off to play BF2

So, I was having this problem :"server only allow unmodified version....etc" I took what UK.D-Hirogen says about PB possibly being the problem.
Steps I took:
Full uninstall, including profiles etc in "My Documents" folder.
Full install.
Go to Punkbuster website (http://www.punkbuster.com/index.php?page=updatepb.php) and do as they say. (DL PBWEB.exe to PB folder and install).
Then run the 1.02 patch.
Bobs your uncle, well at least now in the patchlog.txt it's now saying "Applying HISTORY File Patch for 'mods\bf2\Objects_client.zip'
Updating ...
Updating to next version ...
File successfully Updated!
Which is what Hirogen seems to think is the problem (my symptoms same as his but now fixed)
So now I'm about to try that. If no post from me soon, then it must have worked :)

Guys - it is total hit and miss as the man says. I dowloaded the patch from 3 sources, all failed. Uninstalled/Reinstalled the game (inc checking the reg to ensure it was clean). Attempted the cmd version, got the same "patch failed" error (BTW I have 30Gb free space, so rule that out).
I then copied the patch (un-extracted) to a USB flash drive and ran it from there, worked first time. Total fluke -nothing else to it.
Good luck troops - keep trying...

WHAT YOU MEAN HERE "Full uninstall, including profiles etc in "My Documents" folder.
Full install.
Go to Punkbuster website and do as they say. (DL PBWEB.exe to PB folder and install).
Then run the 1.02 patch."
You must delete your profile  ( my score is good on bf2 so if i delete it im not happy). And the 1.02 patch you mean,
is that the 16mb patch or the 13mb patch zip file. you know the patch.exe and not THAT official patch (16mb)

@Al_Capwn
heh you could have least given me credit for this fix since you took it from my post on the planetbattlefield forums ;)
but this fix is for the error "Can't find install folder for battlefield 2"
----
to fix this prob you need to do the following
I'm a Clueless n00b and do not know how to do this properly. I don't understand whether the folder with all the random characters has to have bf2 stuff in it. Another thing is that I don't know how to go to the new folder using the command prompt screen. My folder is c:\program files\ea games\battlefield 2, but I do not know how to get there. Can someone help me out?

The comment about the disk free space needed to be quite high is correct... some digging in the patch revealed that a program inside the patch needs a lot of disk free space. This is due to the fact that the game is quite large and the patch program needs space to be able to read through and change large files on the disk. The patch program exits with an error without even trying to patch if you do not have enough disk space, so trying anything before freeing up the space is completely pointless!!!

(or whatever your BF2 Path is)
says there is a file string value already named InstallDir - wont let me make it!
and I though I was so close to being able to play rated... ):

Did alot of reading on various forums, went into CMD and ran the folder the Patch creates in the Command Prompt and Finally figured it out. I was having the exact same problem, I would run the patch get the error message saying "Patch Failed" I would then click OK and would get the screen saying "Patch Installed Succesfully" but the game was still on its original version. THE SOLUTION Free up some hard drive space, i had only about 800 Bytes of space left, after some spring cleaning I gave myself a little over 4 gigs of space, and the patch installed flawlessly
so all in all Problem = Insuficient Hard Drive space
Solution = Free up some danged hard drive space
Pimentas
09-13-2005, 03:03 PM
One of possible problem is lack of hard disk space.
I had only 1 GB free and it didn't work.
Then i tried with 4.5 GB free and it worked (takes a long time to finish).
If this is not your case, i suggest checking the "patchlog.txt" file (somewhere inside the "Documents and Settings" folder).
That's where my problem was identified.
Good luck!

please? Thanks!

(or whatever your BF2 Path is)
I want to thank you for your tip. I was having the same problem with patch 103, and your fix worked like a charm!

This totally worked for me. I was having both problems. I was getting modified game errors when entering server, and I was having issues installing the patch. My roommate has the game also and had no problems installing and playing the game. He hasn't patched it, but it did work. As I installed the game, i nabbed all the files that weren't able to be addressed by the installer and replaced them after with no avail. That sucked.
Then I went and downloaded the patch from one of the "non register" sites on the list and tried to install it a half dozen times untill it finally installed. I have no clue why it failed 6 times, but it did.
After I got the patch to install I tried to join a game.....no such luck, it kicked me out. So I exited the game, restarted it and tried to join a NON pb game. That worked just fine. Played for a minute, then quit. Now I can join any game PB or not without a problem.
What's your theory Hirogen as to why this works?

Ive been having the patching failed message for a while now and tried all the fixes but nothing worked. After running the Temp files in a dos prompt there were lots of failed files, this got me thinking. I'm running 2Gig of memory which means that instead of using my HDD for the space needed the patcher loads most of the files it needs to change into RAM, I ran a memtest (http://www.memtest.org/) and occasionally a module would kick up an error, which is understanderble for 4 512 modules of non-ECC memory in dual channel so i ripped out all but one and the modules and everything goes in fine.
Hope this helps some of you :)

Yes bad RAM,, = patching failed "and" Corrupt file, error messages can go hand in hand.

My problem with the patch is this:
1. It stops installing after the language selection and gives me an error summed up as "you need 1.6GB of space"
2. I believe it is installing to my C drive, but I have all my program files (games and other software that are not OS related) on the D drive. both drives are virtual partitions on the same physical drive. I set aside 10GB of space for the OS-only C drive. Now I'm at 11% free space (roughly 1GB) on that drive.
Was that really not enough space for a Windows XP drive? If so, what kinds of files can I delete to make space? If I can't do that, I'd like to simply not install on the C drive and install the patch on the D drive, where the BF2 folder is. Is there a way to redirect the install directory?

Create a file in D drive and rename it BF2 or something.
When the install choice comes up with typical or custom Choose Custom and browse to D drive then the file you created, click on "bf2" file you created, and save in there.

No, that was not enough space if you don't know how to keep programs and applications from defaulting to your C drive. (See Above)
My C drive has XP on it using 7.65 GB having allowed 1 or 2 programs to share space in it (I allocated 12.6 GB for windows in my drive C)
You also would not have used windows defrag if you only have 11% of space left.
Windows Defrag needs at least 15% free space for it to be able to work.
Your C partition will be a mess.

When the install choice comes up with typical or custom Choose Custom and browse to D drive then the file you created, click on "bf2" file you created, and save in there.Aha! See, that's the problem. I don't even get to choose where it goes. I was anticipating a file path for installation, something I was figuring into my patching plan. But for some reason, I received no such warning/choice. It simply goes straight to the language selection, I hit "Next", it fills up the file transfer bar, then it says I need 1.6G of memory to do the install.
Screwy. But yes, I will be reformatting the HDD this weekend, most likely. Not like I'll miss anything on it. Besides, it's a 250GB drive, so I might as well make the first 50GB for XP, the other 200 for deliciously pointless files.

If i were you 'id look into:-
C= 15GB for xp
D= space for all the running programs like "office" all your firmware "AVG" "Adobe" "java" "Ad-Aware" all the mundane stuff say 35GB
E= music games and Cough* vid stuff *cough large more used programs
F= get a program like "Ghost9" and copy your OS (operating system (xp) and all of the important stuff that you have that you wish to keep "permanently" and store it on "F" if the C drive goes tits up you can copy the information stored on "F" The copy of the OS straight to "C" and be up and running in 10 minuets ;)

Ok, reformatted the HDD on Saturday, redid the partitions to 50GB for the OS and 200GB for other files. Yeah, yeah. I know. Fifty gigs for the OS is overkill, but I bet you I'll never get any excuses for not being able to defrag. :)
I reinstalled everything, nice organized files. Then, I patched the v1.03 directly and even downloaded and installed the reality mod. Haven't tried the mod yet, but at least BF2 works now. Unfortunately, the noobs and smacktards do, too...

@Al_Capwn
heh you could have least given me credit for this fix since you took it from my post on the planetbattlefield forums ;)
but this fix is for the error "Can't find install folder for battlefield 2"
----
to fix this prob you need to do the following
Did this but it says "Could not find patch File"
I typed ...
patch.exe "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2"
and yes this is where the game is...
the patch seems to stop when it gets the the mods folder when I run it from desktop...

just start the installation and select language, and copy the temp-files created in C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Local Settings\Temp\{6FB7DD87-BA19-47D2-BFF9-3C64322C6D3B}\{F317E784-F31C-4F26-A610-2D7BD89FEC5F} (or something like that) and copy them into you bf2 dir. then run patch.exe
i got a "not valid cd-key"-error the first time after installing the patch, and this might be fixed by running the "BF2CDKeyCheck.exe" included in the temp-files.
PATCH 1.12 - PATCHING FAILED -
when you copy the patch.exe and the files with it, remember to include the files in the folder byeEF.tmp or something like that(only the files, not in folders). it should be around 250mb. then run patch.exe and when completed run bf2cdkeycheck.exe

I get a message saying that 3000mb of free space is needed when trying to update. It never asks where BF2 is or anything. Then I can only click "OK" and the update program closes. BF2 is on D-drive which has around 70 gigs of free space and C-drive is for windows only and there is no way I can make up the missing disk space for C drive...

HELP! 3 days without BF2 now! going crazy!
Hey, I feel you my friend. I had the same problem, and even though I'm not programmer, here's how I solved it. You follow the classic steps with the command prompt method. When you reach the point where it says "Could not find patch file" this is what you do:
You go to C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Local Settings\Temp\
Now inside there, in addition to the classic "{8CF153EF-CC..." folder supposedly already copied into your Battlefield directory you will find ANOTHER directory which (at least in my pc) is named "bye2CD.tmp" inside there you will find another directory named "disk1". Copy that dir and place it in your standard bf2 folder. Inside that directory you will find a number of files but the most important files are in the directories: "bf2" and "xp1". Now inside those two directories are the patch files: PATCH .RTP and PATCH.RTD. Now the XP1 directory has the patch for the Special Forces Expansion pack and the bf2 has the patch for standard Battlefield 2. So, to upgrade battlefield 2, what you're going to do is, after you have copied the contents of the "{8CF153EF-CC..." directory into your bf2 folder, you also copy (not cut!) PATCH.RTP and PATCH.RTD from the Bf2 folder found in the "disk1" folder and paste it into your standard battlefield 2 folder, then run patch.exe and WATCH THE DAMN MAGIC happening at last!!
Now, to update Special Forces Expansion pack, here's the trick you do. You go to your standard bf2 directory and you DELETE the PATCH.RTP and PATCH.RTD which you had pasted before in order to upgrade the standard battlefield edition. After you delete those two files, you go to your "disk1" directory and you copy from your "xp1" folder the PATCH.RTP and PATCH.RTD files and place them on the standard battlefield folder, and press patch.exe again and WATCH THAT DAMN MAGIC HAPPENING AGAIN!!!!
IMPORTANT: DON'T FORGET TO RUN BF2CDKeyCheck.exe after each patching!!! If you don't when you try to join a multiplayer game on the net it will tell you there is a problem with your cd key.
It worked for me I hope it will work for you. Phew, what a relief.

Well kids, I dunno but tyhis will prolly be a big WTF?
EA first of all is IMHO, using the masses to take care of a certain amount of beta testing, and oh what a jewel, "They PAY to test the game boys!"
That being whined...
Here is the WTF.
Over the passed few days, there have been 2 interrupted manual uninstalls, a system restore with a half-a$$ regedit adventure. The sys restore was then (don't ask why) UN-done, with patch stuff deleted, and ANOTHER restore to a different point, and alot of this done in safe-mode, (I'm a WUSS ya happy?) Mainly due to too much time at the PC with little time to actually be AT the PC it is a drag when there is additional fixin to do. I also never went after any 'punker' files as I am down wiff da BFV fist alpha, and well... YOU know.
Long story longer, I reinstalled bf2, had a 'no can do' md5 situation with OMAN map/mod, snubbed it and finished install, restarted, did a 1.03 download from filecloud to the desktop, invoked the patch with some voodoo chant, and it promptly failed. came back this eve, moved the patch to bf2 folder in my docs. ran it with my thoughts to the lord, SUCCESS! double checked, I have two BF2 folders one in my documents, one in prog files. Well...
Now I will do a run key check and try to pose a game. WILL GET BACK TO YA...
Juheek-up what hoops I jump through for a freekin game...

well, i been away for a while and started to 'try' and get the patch to install last night with all the help from this thread, after pulling my hair out and screwing up my BF2 install i knew there had to be a simple solution....
so here it is.......

Hello all, and thanks for helping us out here!
Unfortunately I'm still not able to run BF ever since the 1.03 patch - I'm seeing a "crash to desktop" on startup, which seems to be common.
All the guides/solutions I have read about and tried do not help. Details follow:
Installation: my C drive is only 4.5 GiB, so there is no hope of freeing up 3 GiB. The fixed installer linked to above is apparently not seeded ATM, so downloading that is unfortunately not possible.
stray's solution of redirecting C:\Program Files to another drive sounds workable, but the only point is to free up space on C, right? (i.e. this does not fool the installer into using that other drive. NB: my temp dir is on D: and has plenty of room)
That leaves Anametheus's instructions for installing manually. Details on installation:
- current and only Windows account is my full name (only ASCII characters) separated by spaces and is an admin.
- I chose "default install", which installs everything and does not ask whether to install for all users or only me.
- yes to Punkbuster, no to Gamespy Arcade
- attempted to run the 1.12 patch, snatched the 2 patch sets for the original game and XPack from its temp dir, applied both in that order (apparently successfully; there are only warnings in the PATCH.ERR about missing xpack files - since I do not have the addon installed - and localization files)
- ran the BF2CDKeyCheck.exe app, verified that ergc code in registry is the encrypted gobbledygook instead of plaintext key
=====
Now a description of what happens when the exe file is started (no extra parameters):
splash screen, DVD drive is accessed, LCD screen does a mode switch, black screen, a bit of HD activity, then the game drops back into Windows.
I have run regmon and filemon to determine last disk/registry activity before dropping out. File access log (short; last part only) (http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~urkt/bf2_filemon.txt) might be interesting - it is unable to load some font files right before dropping out.

About registry: last activity for bf2.exe is opening HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{8FC29 616-E91F-4456-8DCC-CDA712110338}\0000 (appears to hold gfx card/driver settings) and checking for various keys, e.g. CiuFlags1, VCAMSizesFB. They are not found - possibly because they're nvidia-specific. Google doesn't turn up any hits on these.
After this (about 15 seconds into execution), a bunch of WMI stuff in the registry is accessed; maybe it is attempting to write out a crashlog?
No such file is to be found in My Documents\Battlefield 2. While at it, the cache directory only contains one file: rashaderdefault.cfx [3kb binary gook].
====
Various stuff I've tried:
- installing the previous patches first (1.02 worked normally, didn't require the manual-patch thing)
- starting the game as follows: D:\Games\BF2\BF2.exe +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 1024
this avoids the video mode switch but otherwise has no effect.
- deinstalling antivirus and virtual CD program (D-Tools 3.46)
====
Relevant system info:
- Gfx card is a 9700 Pro with the latest 5.12 Catalyst drivers and Control Center, but I've tried all of them since 5.9.
- current screen resolution is 1280x1024:32@60 on an LCD with DVI connection; no refresh lock is active.
- Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam are installed
- Athlon XP 2400+, nForce2 board
- PSU and heat are apparently not a problem (other games work fine)
- 3 256 MiB RAM sticks (2 identical CL2 Infineon in the dual channel slots, one other CL2.5; overall timings are CL2.5)
Well, there we have it. Any more information I (as an experienced coder) can provide?
Has anyone been seeing similar problems or recognize something I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi people,
after posting post after post on forums and listening and putting into practice peoples trial and error formula's for fix this horrible patch i finally found away to get around this, my bf2 worked fine before the patch then since crashes at "62% geometries"iv tried everything to get around it as follows:
1)Uninstalled bf2 reinstalled patch 1.03 still rubbish, bf2 messed up registry files assuming so.
2)unistalled bf2 installed 1.03 patch and the NEW 1.12 patch still crashes and back to desktop as before (62%geometries)
3)unistalled, reinstalled bf2 then straight installed patch 1.12, stil dint work.
****4) Got a spare 200gb hard drive did all the above on there still dint work.
SOLVED : This is how we did it me and a friend have been tryin to solve this problem for ages so we decided to go for abit of BIOLOGY!!!
Your BF2 Folders that are targets for your shortcuts on ur desktop are
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 or the drive letter me be different etc, the thing you need to do to solve all your problems is to find a friend whos not having anyproblems with BF2 (HARDLY LIKELY) mine bein' skin1301 - and get he to allow u to copy his C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 (battlefled 2 folder) to dvd all 3.2Gb of it -----
---- AND GUESS WHAT THE GAME WORKS FINE-------
PROBLEM SOLVED all you need to do now is get hold of someones copied files.

If you people can't download the fixed patch from the linked site above, you can find it on piratebay and download it via bittorrent.

even easier solution, somebody posted to use tweakxp, which is where creds should go since thats what i did to fix it. but instead of installing a trial program, just open up regedit and change the defaul program files location (to somewhere with 3gb+ free), then run the update again and it works!
change this setting in ur registry to some place that has free space
Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion
Name: ProgramFilesDir
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value: d:\Program Files
see the note about changing this key here:

Hi guys, you've all been great and some of the ideas on this server to fix this prob are interesting lol, but after trying them all such as the command prompt method, and the %temp% method and almost losing my mind! i stumbled onto a small article to help with the installation of the patch.
I'm very sorry if you've all tried this, but I would class myself as quite knowledgable about PC's and I hadnt done this.
Quite simply, put the patch installer into the battlefield 2 folder, usually C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2
drag and drop/cut and paste the 280mb installer of the patch into the folder and run it from there. make sure you have the necessesary 3gb of space aswell.
then run the patch from there! after about 10 fails and my alredy lacking faith in EA running out, it worked for me. I hope there are others in my situation and this will help you. now buck up soldier!!:D

I get exactly the same problem. The patch says "Installation successful!" or whatever. Then i go to run battlefield2 and it comes up with a black screen. When i press ctrl+alt+del it says that its not responding. Any ideas? oh yeah and when i have no patches on it works fine ^

I can play bf2 online. I did the cmd solution, and it worked.
But now I'm trying to install the exp pack Special Forces, and when I do that it tries to patch 1.1... But then I get the patching failed error
And then the installer stops, so I can't play sf at all ! If I could have installed and then patch, then I could just use the cmd solution again.
So if anyone knows a way to install sf manually, that would've been great.

The only solution for all errors and stuff of the patching failed is:
Make a friend or have a friend with BF2
if he has not, say to him that BF2 is cool  (hes gonna buy it)
then if he has, download the patch
if its working with no errors
copy all his BF2 files of programfiles/eagames/battlefield2
to a cd and put it on your pc
there are no errors on your pc now, you have the new patch!

When I try to install v1.12 It says Patching error.Help!!!!
i finally patched the battlefield 2 game with 1.12 patch, thanks to the anametheus advice, but i have another problem now: when i try to connect to a multiplayer server, it says "invalid cd key". anametheus said that i should run BF2CDKeyCheck.exe, but where is it? and how does it run? sorry for my poor english, i hope you can help me.
i resolved the cd key problem, but now i have another one^^. i bought special forces but i can't install it because when the installation begins, it says that bf2 must be patched with 1.12 and then "patch installation failed" (i can install the patch only by commands prompt), so i can't install the game. moreover i have already de 1.12, i don't understand.... please help. is there a method to install patch normally with the exe with no need of the command prompt?

The Soluthion:
BF2 isn't campatible with any language but english while installing patches. Spent like 2 days for research.. a'right
Press Start - (in the right column you must see 'My documents' icon) - Right click on 'My documents' - properties - What you need is direct under 'accommodation of a final folder' (smth like that, have Rus version of XP). Path to your documents must be all in english, change it to, for example C:\Documents and Settings\User\My documents (inc your username) and don't forget to copy your Battlefield 2 profile files in it or you won't be able to log into your BF2 account.
Everything must be workin' now, have fun.

Anametheus.:D
All well and fine, and according to the lengthy patch process it did work, but now I'm on a crash to desktop situation.
Here's my situation. Got the game on Sunday, it works on version 1.0, but of course I can't join any ranked servers. I have more than enough space to install the patch as directed, but any time I attempt to do so is met with failure. I've got the latest Nvidia drivers, so it's not that.

Use memtest to check your RAM for errors.
Also, a description of your general system setup could help solve your problem.
I got the newest version BF2 running on my pc at work (Just to pass some time some times ;)). And this one has a 6200 :D

Okay, my system.
AMD 2000+ (Just scraping the requirements I know)
512mb RAM
Geforce 6200 256mg AGP card
LG DVD Drive
Latest Nvidia drivers.
The only advice EA give is to constantly uninstall and reinstall.
I can play the 1.00 version, but obviously no ranked servers, when I try to patch to 1.12, I get Patch Failed or RTP executable errors. I did the manual patch last night and the files patched. BTW, are you meant to cancel the installshield program thats left open after the manual patching is done?
After starting to load I get the Battlefield 2 screen, but crash to desktop before the EA Logo.

I recall that when I first installed BF2 on my work PC I did not install DirectX9c that came with the game. It asked me to install DX9c, and I declined. Then I had the game crash to desktop right after the splash.
I hate to tell you because you were already told many times, but I then reinstalled the game and accepted the installation of DX9c even though I had DX9c already installed on the system. The game didn't crash anymore after this.
You may want to try this if you clicked on cancel too when asked to install DirectX9c right after BF2 installation.
You are sure that you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed?
Also download Memtest, burn it on a CD, and run a memory test to see if you don't have any faulty/damaged RAM.

I was pretty sure my DirectX was up to date, but I always err on the side of caution just in case. So I did install it. I do have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed.
Just in case it might somehow be relevant, my mouse is an Logitech MX518, and also when attempting to patch, I had about 9.75 gig free space.
The Motherboard is an Asus A8n8X as well.

Hmm..
Can someone else that has gone through the manual patching procedure confirm this? As I had the patching successful box popping up.
Did you try creating a partition, and install BF2 on this separate partition? Also remove your BF2 folder in your My Documents folder before installing freshly.

I got the patching successful message, but nowhere does it say what to do afterwards with the Installshield screen.
Trying to patch and leave it to run using the installer always gave error messages, and believe me, by waiting and watching the progress of the manual patch I realise it takes a while.
After every failed patch, if I reinstalled, I used the eraser tool and cleared out the Battlefield 2 files from the My Documents folder as instructed, plus I ran the CDKeyCheck program.

Have you tried creating a new account with administrative rights, and run/reninstall BF from there?
Also, what driver version are you using?

I've no problems installing the game, its the patching. Could that still help.
As to video drivers, its 6.14.0010.8198. I downloaded them from Nvidia yesterday.

It might be worth to at least try to install the patch from a new account.
Let me know if it helps.
Drivers 81.98 should be fine.
