The Official Battlefield 2 website has been updated today with a rather large community update. This update is about the Battlefield 2 Combat Tour of Duty and the Ranked Server Admin Program. EA has also stated that the mod tools are in the final testing stage and will be released very soon. Check it out below:
EA and Planet Combat are pleased to announce two initiatives that have been building up for some time and are now ready to roll: BF2 Combat: The Battlefield 2 Tour of Duty and the Ranked Server Admin Program. Both of these initiatives are provided to the community entirely by the team at Planet Combat, with our blessing.
BF2 Combat, the Battlefield 2 Tour of Duty, is a unique community which will allow players to experience Battlefield 2 as never before. Featuring multiple ten-hour battles every week (of which members can attend as many or as little as they like) the Tour of Duty offers members a hierarchically-structured environment replete with cool features. During signup, people have the option of enlisting to fight for the United States Army or Marine Corps, the Middle Eastern Coalition Armies, or the People's Liberation Army. All divisions offer the same superior game experience. Players can elect to participate in a variety of programs, including an Army Ranger School designed by real US Army Rangers and a wide swath of qualifications. Perhaps the coolest thing about the Tour of Duty is that the world changes dynamically not only after each battle but also after each three month Tour. That means generals are able to decide what areas they will attack next, and the maps played will reflect these decisions. Members will also be able to bring their unlocked weapons in on battle day and will get priority selection for BF2 Combat's public ranked servers.

Hehe, don't forget to mention the fact that part of the community update is devoted to explaining the new server browser, as well as more news about the modding tools.

What BF2 Combat is doing is cool but they make it sound like it has never been done before. Several groups have done almost the exact same thing in BF42, for various BF42 mods, BFV, and lots of other war games years before that. I wish I was around on Sundays. :(

Ace u forgot to write about one much more important part of the news. on the last page it says that the MDT have been given to some mods and would be released in days not weeks to the public.

As to the comments about sections of the news article being left out: You should know by now that only a couple of snippets are taken from the article. Read the fulll article for everything.

This was done in order to get the editor to the public faster. If you’re on a mod team that didn’t get the beta, don't worry, you'll get it soon. The selection was intentionally kept very small so we could stay organized and focused. Barring a major issue being discovered, the editor is now mere days from being released. Not weeks, days!
Hmm, we've heard get the mod tools to us fast before...but at least they're giving us a time limit now. Lookin forward to the mod tools. :D A rather lengthy community update as well. O_o

why do we have to pay? what is the money for?
I think the last paragraph is the most importent. You can test to see if its worth the money every friday and still win things =) With how well Ive been playing lately (surprisingly, Im not all that good) Id like to see how I measure up. Ive always loved a good competition >=)

Not just soon anymore, but VERY soon! Oh boy! I can't wait until we get the mod tools really soon! And then when we get them incredibly soon!
why do we have to pay? what is the money for?
The thousands of dollars worth of servers that they have already had to pay for....

We have a sponsorclub. free passes every month.
And about the editor I can't say a thing ;) damn :). but soon is sooner than you think :). It has to be debugged first otherwise you all gonna whine again that they delivered a ****ty job. It's always to late or to early. It is never OK.
Don't get this thread into a tourney bashing thing again.
BF2C rocks CW21 rocks GC rocks and all I forget they ROCK. :)
Form your opinion on some more solid facts than shouting things around.

For the record, the rumors regarding the early release where true. The only reason EA gave up the info is because some of us have taken exception to being left out and made our objections known. In this thread, http://forums.totalbf2.com/showthread.php?p=212516#post212516, the rumor was denied by site staff.
The way the early distribution was handled is total bunk.

To those at BF2 Combat,
You say that the money goes to your servers... Correct? How many of those servers you have are free from your sponsors? How many total servers do you pay for? Or do you rent 1-2 boxes and run 6 servers off them? What are your servers costing you per month? How many members do you have?
Lets say for arguements sake that you have 500 Members. x $3/month/player = $1,500. Lets say you pay for 5 servers. Cost of a decent server should probally cost you around $150/month x 5 servers = $750/month. That leaves $750/month.
Now I dont know exactly how many servers they run or what they are paying for them. But $3/Head x the amount of participants adds up. And I dont see you guys needing more then 3-4-5 servers tops anyways. The Battle takes place on one. Have 1 Public server and then 2-3 servers for practices.
So to my main question... where does the money go?
If you say prizes... you only list 2 Video cards, a couple of Zboards and what not as your prizes. And of those I am sure most are dontated. Even if you had to pay for them lets say the cards cost $400/each give or take. Thats lets say $800 for the cards another $200 for the Zboards. And $250 for whatever else. Thats $1250 total for the tournament. And if the tournament runs 3 months x $750/month you make profit after server costs thats $2,250 - the $1,200 of the prizes leaves you $1000. Thats some nice pocket change for whoever runs it (GigiloAnt).
As to the Prizes... how will you be giving them out? BEst score? Most Kills? Random drawing?
As to the Tournament it self. It was fun when it was free in BFV. But... the lag was horrible. Especially when you had both Euros & North Americans on the same server. So pings were from 20-300. Also having to wait to join the match because the other team doesnt have enough guys also sucks. They had a rule and I am sure do again where no one team can have more then 3 guys. To keep everything fair. Which sounds like a good idea. Until the one team has the problem every single week. And instead of having those not playing join the other team, they just make you wait till someone on your team leaves or they finally get another.
Now if the Tournament was free still I would probally join it as something to do on Sundays durring the day. But the commitment you require, the training, the cost (altough not alot) and all the problems I had in BFV it wouldnt be worth $3/month. To me that is.
I do wish you the best of luck. And perhaps some of the problems you guys have in BFV have been corrected.

Whats up? Coyote. Most of the people that have signed up do not mind paying the 10 bucks or whatever because it keeps the kids out. That way your left with a mature group of players which makes it more enjoyable for everyone. Personally, I dont really care where the money goes. Give me what I want and I will gladly pay you for it.
I havent seen any lag yet with the scrim battles that we have played. I think the netcode is much better with BF2 vs BFV.
Anyhow, Good luck with the hawks.
