No fix for it yet. ATI is aware of the problem, I'm sure 5.8 will address many of the issues in BF2 (such as graphical corruption when playing for long periods of time, etc).
However, depending upon your card mdoel, you maybe abel to crank the AA up and get rid of it. I have an X850XT PE and I have my AA set at 6x and here is a screen shot:

I tried to, but when this happens it says I don't have enough memory to take the screenshot. I have 1.0 GB Ram and close every other process before playing.
I had the problem happen to me last night, was playing support and all of a sudden the valley in the dam map turned black. Then when using the zoom for the weapon the middle portion of my monitor turned completely black, but when I zoomed out it was fine. Eventually though I squeezed off a burst of rounds and it fixed itself. It seems to be running out of memory to process new textures or something?

Omegadrivers.net ATI's drivers fixed my problems with the game. But I'm on a laptop with a 9600 Mobility card.

are you talking about the problem w/ shadows having jaggy edges or something else? afaik the jaggy edges cant be helped.
The problem I have with my X800XT PE is jagged edges on shadows. Havent found any drivers that fix this problem as of yet.
Right now the Omega Drivers give me the best performance with all settings on high.

dag folks, i have a dumb question about running AA, right now in my control cent i have it set to let the app decide for AA, should my x700 be able to handle at least 4AA? i've noticed when i did purposely enable 4x that some servers teh text gets screwed an isnt readable...anyone else experience this?
@suby1128
i had 1GB of ram and used to get the black textures problem. i noticed BF2 was using all the 1GB and running out so thats why it couldn't display some textures....since i got 2GB i have had none of these problems so i think its more of a memory issue.

I have 2 systems
identical ecxept graphics card
(3.2 gh p4, 1.5g hs ram, 3 mbit dsl)
one has x300 /128mb
it barely makes 40 fps (with ALL on low or off)
and screen at 1024xx768
the x800XL with 2b6MB
has all on high (shadows and dynamic lighting off)
4xAA and 1280x1024
it gets 60-80 fps
picture quality looks awesome!!!!!!
only TINY improvement at higher res/AA
of course shadows look 'cool'
but do not effect the game play
my quesiton is
should I risk the omega drivers to get better performance
(ie i HATE to fix things when they are not broken)
thanks

@discostu420: yeah you're stuck w/ it. AA might help, i play in 1200x900 AAx2 and can only notice the shadow jags when up close.
@sloppyJo: do you have dynamic shadows on? post a pic?
@topgungreg: cant hurt to use omegas. usually better than the standard. im using a x800pro w/ omega 2.6.25a. if its not good you can always roll back.

Oh how I wish I had the 2 gigs of RAM needed to play this on high... I feel like my X800 Pro 256MB is getting wasted because I have to play on medium settings and I have to turn the terrain down to low details. And even with these settings I still get a good 5 minutes of first round lag.
5.7s have been fine for me but as has been said, ATi didn't put any BF2 fixes into the 5.7 drivers.

hmm you have the same card and ram as me but i play w/ terrain&effects&textures on high, geometry and texture filtering on medium, lighting and dynamic shadows on low, dynamic lighting off, anti aliasing x2 and draw distance at 100%.
what else are you using?

topgungreg: you dont need to uninstall/reinstall the official catalysts to install an omega driver. it automaticly overwrites the files that the catalysts use. if you dont like them, you can just uninstall the omegas and easily go back to your previous drivers

For my x850xt pe ATi's cat 6.14.10.6517 date 22/02/2005
I'm using these for now, some small anomalies but works great for me, all BF2, in game settings on high.
I'm waiting for ATI to complete tests and release new drivers specifically to deal with any remaining issues for BF2, this is a matter of only a few days away.

In my computer?
The memory is single channel PC2700, I have an Athalon XP 2500+ Barton and an Audigy 2 all on an Asus A7N8X-X motherboard.
In the game settings I've got shadows off, dynamic lighting on low, 2x AA, medium texture filtering and full draw distance.

Wow.. I run everything on HIGH at 1280X1024 6X AA with my X800..
now if only the shadows were getting fixed..
oh and PS, I have 768MB ram and i run everything on HIGH.. it takes a minute for the game to 'catch up' but well worth it.

I am on an AMD 3500+ with Sapphire X800 XT-PE, and 2GB Pqi Dual Channel PC3200 DDR4 RAM. I run 1600x1200, 6x AA, and I have shadows that look like crap! I also have to run Texture, and Dynamic Shadows at Medium, or it freezes solid for about 2sec when I go over main parts of the Map, and such. Below is a pic of what my shadows look like.

We all have shadows like that....
BF2 shadows are apparently rendered to textures which multisampling can't anti-aliase.
Ur stuck with it like the rest of us... at least for now anyway.
