This is the mod I would like to see made for BF2 and done by a pro team (a la Trauma Studios of Desert Combat fame)
Gundam (the original series):

If it were well done that could be a blast. If not for BF2, here's to hoping that we see such a game on the Unreal 3 engine.

Gundam's lame. Even this video's lame.
-Watch Ghost in the shell
-Watch the new Appleseed
-Watch the Ghost in the shell series (Stand alone complex)
Shirow rocks. I'd like to see appleseed and Ghost in the shell tech and tactics be done in a Game.
Too good to be true, too hard to do, will never happen :(

Duh...no?
Ghost in the shell series is just a bunch of Partially/Fully cyborg elite police crack crew, solving strange cases, drawing heavy fire and occasionally playing with very fancy hardware.
There are blue robots as AI's introduced at one point, though they don't really qualify as "little" (being about 3 meters tall). Occasionally the blue robots do battle, which is always a mix between funny and kick-***.
The main figurine is a full-body cyborg, who also happens to be an exquisite hacker.
Shirow simply is the grandmaster of mecha design. For a start, his mechas do not look like a 12 year old designed them "yeah and there this shield would be kewl, and then here we need some spikes, yeah kewl".

Agree with blankoboy, that would be rather cool. Gundam or Robotech setting and trasforming your robot into a vehicle ... I'd even pay money for that kind of mod :D (If it is done properly ofcourse)

Gee I'm looking forward to Team Fortress Classic 2 Source, that's going to be an awesome game (except for the fact that it too, will never be released, or being developped for that matter)
Actually Team Fortress 2 is so far on the Vapoware scale, beating even things like Duke Nukem Forever, that I think it would be deserving a whole new scale to measure it on.
How about Promiseware, Nullware, Hypeware, Jokeware, Gabeware, Babbleware, Delayware, Mouthfullware, Hitmeware, Foreverware, Neverware, Notanyware, Punware or Skunkware?

Giant robots in Ghost in the shell are also rather an exception then the rule, and when they apear they've more in common with four legged tanks then an oversized 12 year old wet dream of how knights should've looked like when people had Robots in the medival age.

Oh and by way of Matrix. It's generally known the Wacholsky brothers took a lot of Anime stuff to make Matrix.
What this actually means is that they took a whole lot of Ghost in the shell and then little bits from here and there. Coming to literature they took again a big bite of Neuromancer, and then various stuff from here and there.

Well Ghost in the shell has a lot of kewl gear, most of which isn't Giant robots. So in the topic as "I'd like to see my favorite (insert your thing here) as mod" it's quite on topic. Aparts from that, it's an answer to something another person was saying...

couldnt they just make the mobile suit into your character? so, just like your soldier now, except it would be modeled to be a gundam...
I'm not sure what Gundams were in the original series... I've only seen Gundam Seed, so I would prefer using gundams from Gundam seed.. did the original have gundams that could be invisible, and that could partially transform, or snipe, and other stuff?

Hey guys, i'm the leader of MTS - Mech Tactical Simulation for BF2.
You know of course Mechwarrior is a copy of the Macross universe, which after all was there before the first Mechwarrior stuff got to the masses.
Battletech (the universe where MechWarrior is set) is NOT a copy of the Macross universe. Rather, a couple of the early mechs (18 i think) were licensed from Macross and some anime, but that was in the 80s, and those have since been discontinued, and revamped (new visuals with same name). Everything else about BT and MW is original, and has absolutely nothing to do with Macross.
Ahm, I might add. Our wet dreams about legged gear is totally illusory. Legged vehicles are not supported by the game. They will never be supported.
We're really looking forward to handing EA/DICE their asses on this. They also said BF2 was gonna be released in March, the Editor a month before the game, then early june, than late june, than mid july, and also said some of the stuff in Desert Combat wasn't doable, and guess what? They were wrong.
Don't put so much faith in what they said, specially judging by the amount of bugs in the retail BF2, i won't take their word as law.
Our official site is offline for now, and will return soon, but the mod is still going on behind the scenes, we'll get back to the public eye soon.

Couldn't they just make the mech be your soldier when you get in...
Clearly EA isn't throwing resources at the BF2 community just for the sake of it. They try to keep their costs as small as possible while earning a max profit.
They do things in terms of "what can we just barely get away with".
They surely have a priority list. And I guess it looks like this.
-Bugs/Usability
-Balancing
-Community
-Modding
-Nice to have
For starters, the bottom point, "Nice to have" is just to fill the list. They actually will never get around doing this stuff. If legged support is somewhere on this list, it's most likely in this "Nice to have" category. As it is they barely get around doing the first point on the list. It seems like they're getting some of the balancing stuff done too in 1.03, not sure though.
Nobody at the moment even thinks about Community or modding.
Do you really expect them to ever deliver legged vehicles? Really really?

No sir, you missed the point about what I was saying.
I can't expect you to deliver legged vehicles because it's out of your reach. No modder can do it. Not as along as bf2 doesn't support it.
(of course you can always resort to make something with legs that wiggles them a bit, problem is you don't need to fight your enemies then anymore, because they're lying on the floor laughing.)
MaSaKaRi
07-27-2005, 05:56 PM
Again, you missed the point of my post. Just because DICE hasn't implemented legged vehicles doesn't mean it can't be done. There's a difference between what BF2 the game supports, and what BF2 the engine supports. Again, DC for BF42 accomplished a lot of stuff which was supposedly impossible.
I think it comes down to: you don't believe it can be done, and i do, regardless if it's supported by default in the engine or not.

I think it comes down to: you don't believe it can be done, and i do, regardless if it's supported by default in the engine or not.
Of course you're free of believing whatever you want. However I must warn you. There's a fine but distinctive line between reaching for the stars and fooling yourself.
I've followed the battlefield franchise right from the days of Codename eagle. On each iteration I've inspected the capabilites of the engine, made some research, and watched the mods.
-Galactic conquest tried very very hard, but couldn't get walking vehicles right.
-bf2 is not fundamentally different from bf 1942, architecture and engine wise ( yeah yeah, nicer graphics and a lot of gimick stuff, yadda yadda )
Sure you've a point that the engine can do more then is actually in the game. Though most of that is leftovers from development. I'm pretty sure you'll not accidentially uncover the leftover walking support that incidentially works.
The egine doesn't support walking machines on multiple levels. It's not just an arbitary feature missing. The whole thing essentially is build without the slightest thought about this.
Now if walking was a fairly easy thing, I'd say, yes, can be done. However walking isn't just an arbitary feature as I said before. It needs the engine to support pretty fancy animation cycles. Not only would the legs need to move correctly. The engine would have to know that your vehicles is balancing itself upright on uneven terrain. The engine'd have to adjust your leg-bends to accomodate the illusion of balancing. The sound for the walking would've had to play only when your feet interact with the floor. And that's just the rough stuff, there's a zigillion of little details that can screw you right over with that.
If you'd be a super genius computer wizz, that can see trough hex code like an open book, I'd even give you a fair chance that you can hack something together that helps you along just enough to make the feet-wiggling look less rediculus.
Well, see the odds that you, or anybody without the sources, actually pulls this off are about as good as that a global killer hits earth tomorow. It could happen, it's just extremely unlikely.
I'd be glad if you prove me wrong. I'd really be. But I think my believe has some solid base to stand, wheras yours is most likely the boundless faith of the youth.
MaSaKaRi
07-28-2005, 12:18 AM
Well, i have no idea of your age, and you of mine, so let's keep the patronizing to a bare minimum, shall we?
DICE have also stated in the past that night maps and night vision and legged vehicles were being worked on, but cut from the final version. Night maps and night vision are in the upcoming xpac. Desert Combat did a lot of things no one thought possible. The MTS coders have shown me and outlined their method of how this could be done, and frankly i think it can be done. Some details will be missing (like, the system may not be perfect like the MechWarrior series, but will be alot better than Galactic Conquest, for example).
You're free to think otherwise, and i respect that, i'm already looking forward to MTS proving everybody and specially DICE and EA wrong.
My only real concern is of breaking the EULA - it's very strict (ie only through the proper mod tools can mods be made), and making Mechs work MAY require outside tinkering.
Anyway, MTS the mod will always survive. We have a really nice backup should the BF2 engine fail to suit us for any reason (may even fail us for something not mech related), frankly it's not like the BF2 engine is the best in the world... ;)
pyalot
07-28-2005, 09:47 AM
Bout the thing with the EULA, I wouldn't worry. Enforcing eulas in reality's a *****. Sure you're bound rather strictly to copyright, but that's an entirely different thing. Apart from excluding your ip/cd-key from ranked online gaming they can't do jack.
No, the bf2 engine really isn't the best in the world. They got a few things in good balance, but a lot of it is a complete mess.
I'd keep a sharp eye out on the unreal engine. Lots of pretty good stuff is going on there. I personally know the guys doing the new physics engine for the unreal engine, and they rock. They're years ahead of their competition. I've seen some pretty awesome stuff at their place, two years ago! Heh, two years ago I was having bbq with their head programmer and we dreamed a bit about physics acceleration chips and how far better that would be then doing it on the cpu. Well, look at the ps3 :D. I excpect it will not take too long before that sort of thing enters the pc market.
DICE have also stated in the past that night maps and night vision and legged vehicles were being worked on, but cut from the final version. Night maps and night vision are in the upcoming xpac. Desert Combat did a lot of things no one thought possible.
Such as? From what I saw the Desert Combat team actually did very little to push the engine and had very few innovative ideas implemented (except for the "Push" map gametype, that was pretty innovative).
The MTS mod has some nice looking models and it'd be really, really awesome to have the ability to have proper bipedal vehicles in BF2. But I really doubt DICE will bother to improve support for that, in fact, in an interview I read, I believe DICE said they were working on 4-legged support but didn't manage to get it in, not 2-legged.

You missread the interview. The producer of bf2 was asked what he would've liked to have in bf2. He said he would've liked 4 legged vehicles support, but they didn't have the time to do it.
That doesn't mean they did anything. It also doesn't mean they will work on it. It only means that when they ever have time to reach the bottom of their priority list (read never) they will consider doing it. Which is, alas, all the point of what I was trying to explain in the first place.
And I too think that you can't get legged vehicle support without the sources to the programm itself. Even then I think it would be a feat, at least when done properly.
