View Full Version : Instant lock on
Lately i've seen people locking their missiles instantly onto their target. They somehow skip that first sound and goes directly onto the second which informs you now can fire. I've seen airplanes, mobile and stationary anti air units doing this.
What's the trick? How do they do it? :)

Do you mean when your flying? When you get the SAM warning light?
If missiles miss there intended target and fiind another, your gont get painted and dontget the first stages of the SAM warning.

The missles if shot in the right spot will lock on in air.

Also, if you're in a plane, try flying with your bombs out while manuevering behind an enemy. With the bombs active, you won't try to lock on, so they won't hear a warning. Then, either gun them down, or switch to your rockets and let 'em fly; flares or not, rockets don't miss from 5 meters away.

Exactly. It makes them relax, and when they just idle along like nothing is going on, blow the crap out of them!

if a stinger breaks lock because of flares on original target, it IMMEDIATELY locks on the closest target, friend or foe, within a certain radius.
That is how you quite often get tks and team damage as a fixed stinger site operator.

you are correct, if the flares aren't a factor (such as been fired, and not in view anymore, and you can lock on to plane) then fire and it will lock on mid air.

The right answer comes from xRandoMx: locked missiles which got flares will immediately lock-on to nearest target. The fun part is that you can use it as weapon: if you are in the middle of a chopper dogfight, and you get shot at from an IGLA, your opponent is doomed to get TK'd for sure.

Speaking of lockons. Them damned bomber laserguided missles. Almost every session i play and i get perfect lock with them, the second i fire them i lose the lock and the missle just flies of into nothingness. What gives?

Works fine for me. I just tail people with bombs selected shooting at the engine and then when I am kinda close I switch to rockets shoot 2 off and go back to bombs.

Its usually because the pilot isnt flying in a straight line to your target, the bombadier get a really wide range of movement in his view but anything other then a few degrees off straight-on and you will probably not maintain the lock if he is traveling at full speed.
This can also be used to your advantage, when you blind fire them they go more or less straight and you can fire a volley fast if you are nice and low, thats if there are no friendlys about of course  The carrier is a good place to just blind fire or anytime the pilot swoops in for his own bombs. Dont forget you get loads of missiles compared to the pilots load-out (is it 12 or even 16 missiles?) in the bombers, so you will never run out before a fly-by for the pilot to reload.
In regards to the original question, several of the answers are true, the locking closest heat source when flared is the most common, but mid-air lock-on also works, as does a really fast aquisition when following from behind with bombs out, this is really effective is you can wait for the perfect moment when he is distracted to switch and fire giving the impression of an instant lock by the time it happens. Less then a second from being safe to being a burning wreckage
