View Full Version : What does it take, jeez..

A couple weeks ago, I decided to try BF2 on 4 of my PCs..
All are differant mobos.. differant video cards..

I posted my results here on this forum in another thread..

The average time it took for any of these pcs before a crash,
freeze, or reboot was about 1 out of every 4-5 games..

Sooo... I went out the other day bought a hot new Fatality AN8-SLI
board, a new ATI PCI-E X800XL/256 Video Card, A new case with 2
additional fans.. (4 total).. 2 New 1GB 3200 RAM chips, new 450W PS..

Using.. these new parts with a nearly new 160 Maxtor Drive and DVD-RW
drive I had.. I built this PC for the sole purpose of a BF2 gaming PC..

Result ? Well... the machine flys.. Load times are noticably shorter,
Graphics are now stutter free.. and able to use max settings if I chose,
though I usually just run normal settings at 1024x768... ** BUT ** ......
The game still crashes about 1 out of 4-5 games...

What will it take? What does EA expect a person to have? Im EXTREMELY
curious..

personally, I think the game engine is badly written.. this game is a
resources and graphics nightmare to a PC... Sure its a lot of code,
sure the game is new generation, sure I didnt expect a low or mid budget
video card to work well with it.. but damn.. what will it take? Does NASA
have a machine I can use to run this thing ? Does anyone?

Like I said, I have several PCs.. all newer models.. all with minimum 1.5GB ram,
and video cards include, ATI 9800PRO/256 , NVIDIA 6800GT/256oc , as well
as the new PCI-E X800/XL-256.. **ALL** these machines have issues
with this game.. no matter what configuration I use, no matter what parts
I swap from here to there..

Its sad..

I guess I just live with knowing the game is going to crash every hour and
a half and go on about my business... :)

Um, I have no issues. My game never crashes, stutters, freezes, nothing.

First off, get the new ATI drivers. 5.7 but do NOT get the ones with Catalyst Control Center, rather just the ATI Control Panel.

Its great that you got a nice mobo and lots of ram, but that won't do **** for sound, which is a huge part of this game. Pick up an Audigy2 ZS sound card (don't blow your load on an Audigy4 they aren't worth it).

Also, DICE has stated they were not happy with the game when it went to retail, so I'm guessing EA pushed them into releasing it earlier then they were comfortable with which is why there are so many issues. The v1.03 patch due out end of August will hopefully solve a ton of these problems (they stated 140 were already included in Mid-Late July when it was announced).

so you think I could be having a sound conflict or issue ?

I dunno.. anything is possible I suppose.. I will say, however, that I have
had over 300 sales of BF2 in my store since it came out.. I would estimate
50-60 of them were returned.. I was aware that the new patch would be
fixing some issues.. but from what I have read so far, I have little confidence
that the patch will result in a more stable platform for many..but rather a few.
I am happy the browser will get a update, though.. that still blows in this game.

If you're going to spend that much on a computer why not throw a new Sound Card in there? The Audigy2 ZS is a good card. If nothing else it takes "pressure" off the CPU (for lack of better terms) as it will pick up the sound rendering. If you get it remeber to disable your onboard sound and get the Beta drivers (just look around for FPS boost, Audigy2 users, etc, I have posted many times on how to do this).

just installed a audigy2 last night, game still crashes about every 5th
game though.. and I dont notice any better framerate whatsoever..

And the card that came with the mobo has just as many features,
almost..

but it will do nice in another machine I have , so no loss.

Click the link in my sig to fix your Audigy2 stuff. Hopefully it will help free some system resources.

I think that YOU are the problem.

C:\> insert new user, press any key to continue . . .

j/k

With your 4 PC's, connect them, create 4 accounts and start stats padding yourself !!

Yeah, they would never notice the same IP for all 4 players!
