<a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/battlefield2specialforces/preview_6130167.html" target="_blank">GameSpot</a> has recently posted an interview with the Battlefield Producer Mike Doran. This interview gives a general rundown of what will be included in the expansion and how it will be different from regular Battlefield 2.
With Battlefield 2 burning up the sales chart since its release in June, EA hasn't wasted any time in commissioning an expansion pack for the game in Battlefield 2: Special Forces. There's a wealth of new content in Special Forces, including an impressive six new armies (compared to just three in Battlefield 2), along with a slew of new maps, weapons, and features. For a quick situation report on the expansion, we caught up with longtime Battlefield producer Mike Doran. Special Forces is expected to ship this winter.
GameSpot: First off, there are a lot of people voicing concern and complaints that current issues in Battlefield 2--such as bugs and balancing--haven't been addressed, but yet DICE is working on an expansion anyway. Would you like to address that?
Mike Doran: This is a common misconception that we'd love to address. The truth is that work on Battlefield 2: Special Forces began several months ago. The expansion pack is being developed by DICE Canada, while DICE Sweden is running the postlaunch support team. To be clear, we are actively working on the next patch, and development of Special Forces has in no way affected our continued efforts towards supporting the base product.

lol.. IMO this expansion is going to suck badly. Zip lines, jet ski's etc, wtf? Only good thing that will come out of it is NV, which can hopefully be used in mods.

Brereton55... Wow, you won't click a simple link just because of something that stupid? Sony has nothing to do with Dice or EA...
I think you should either click the link or miss out...
Interview is too big to post anyways, so get the attachment...

A Devote fan like myself looks forward to this...
Ah well I am sure people will complain about this too, nature of the beast.
I for one will buy it and enjoy it like I do BF2 now... Along with CoD2 and FEAR when those are released around the same time.

I'm new to the BF series. How much do these expansions usually cost?
~US~Riggs-
08-02-2005, 11:43 PM
i will be buying the expantion... most of the BF2 maps SUCK except for the 3 urban ones... most of the expations have costed around 20 bucks USD, i will also be buying CoD2... since the first one was a blast in SP mode (played the SP mode prolly 4 times... awesomely fun)
I'll see when it's out, reviewed and priced if I buy it or not, one thing I know: 8 maps is poor. I don't care much about new armies and weapons. I want maps. Free maps. Maps. Maps. And maps.

well I gotta admit some of the new stuff they are talking about sounds awsome. but when I hear about the word "Flashgrenades" and think of a map like "Strike at Karkand" I instantly start to twitch with my right eye and drool stareing into the wall. Now that doesnt mean it's something good. more like pre-made shock for the future maps to come with those kinds of nades hehe
anyways when bf2 gets kind of old, about the time his expansion comes about it will defenitely be someting on my wish list and I will happily be playing it alongside with bf2 :)
better this then nothing at all eh

why do you people constantly bicker about a 20 to 30 dollar expansion? is it really that much money... think about how much they would have spent on staff wages and production??????? they have to pay for it somehow.....
ps. dont say ea just want our money, cause for your money you get a kick *** game/expansion that will provide days of entertainment...... quite cheap when you think about it.

I would like that, as long as there aren't a few attack helicopters after you, and the usual beep beep from a nearby jet or AA emplacement.

Expansion packs don't interest me... mods do.
That review by gamespot was ****house. Didn't ask the right questions or get the answers. So what was the point? Marketing.
i've been playing DC again and to me the gameplay of BF2 is homogenised and without real gritty distinction between roles and classes. DC has that and I think it is because more skill is involved. In the choppers of DC it is SO much easier to get taken out and therefore pilots really do work hard to stay alive. The same with planes. And AA in DC is very effective and pilots have to be on their toes.
Waiting for the mods to become playable in BF2. Forget about the expansion.
Oh, and the Apache in BF2 will be just the same as all the other attack choppers in BF2. The same sloppy control and boring flights. The Apache is in there in name only.

you make me laugh... how many copys have they sold at 50bucks each...
700,000 or so players that are tacked by the stats system... yes i know that some ppl have more that one player but... if we go off of the figure 700,000x$50 a copy thats...$3,500,000 im not sure but thats prolly enough to pay the staff/production
ps... and they do want our money why do you think that there makeing the game...

More crap to unlock, and weapons balanced based on the maps they will play on instead of something like, ballistic physics. I have no time to spend 3 years unlocking the original crap; but this time i won't waste money by purchasing this expansion.. Thank God for the realism mods that put ballistics in a proper perspective..

Ea/Dice really are inching very close to the line where I won't support them anymore.
BF2 has been ridiculously buggy and slow to get patched, DICE has never been very good to its players by adding new content...
1942, atleast, worked fine before they made an expansion.
Dice and EA reaaaaaaaally need to take a look at the way Valve constantly provides upates and new content for it's programs. CSS has had about 6 new maps since it's release.. as well as nonstop patching. Valve is quickly becomming what I expect any company to be.

Well I think since they are focusing on the Infantry portions of BF2 in the Expansion that Heli would be just for Transport... Kinda Like Mastuur city with just the BH's and MI-17 Hip... Just gunners and IGLA's on the ground.
The gunners on it would be your protection with smallarms fire

ROFL! All this complaining and nonsense about a game you all hate or can't stand cuz' it doesn't run on your system.
"Man I hate EA/DICE so much, but i'm gonna' buy this expansion." ROFL, That'll teach em' :D
First off there's two teams working on BF2 and the expansion for those that can't read the interview and secondly if you don't like the game either get a better rig and optimize it so it runs properly or Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/BattleField 2.
Oh and while i'm at it, Read your Intruction Manual for BF2, thats why it's there. And, for gawdsakes, when you play BF2 on a server "The insert key is your friend, join a squad, all the cool kids are doing it." Its one simple button push takes no effort at all and its completely painless for everyone.
And, Finally "TK punish is for noobs, Forgive your teammates, accidents happen." and for those that think it was deliberate, use judgement. People are too quick to punish their teammates.

Roads to Rome
Hello? did anyone here buy THAT expansion pack?
I did.. it was great, awsome maps and planes, nice tanks, great teamplay
HOWEVER NO BODY else bought it, it was almost impossible to find a game server playing it (let alone a good server)
Fool me once.. shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.. no $$$ this time EA
p.s. that interview was bunk
p.p.s everyone likes playing the urban maps??? i love kubra damn.. *sigh* oh well
Road to Rome was great. Secret Weapons of WWII... not so great. I haven't played either in a LONG while.

Zip lines? Jet Skis? WTF!?!? thats not special operations forces that like James Bond ********...
SOF would be like Repelling ropes (either normal or Aussie style), fast roping from helicopters and using Zodiac boats. Theres no way I'm paying for this expansion, downloading it all the way, not wasting my money like I did with BF2, yeah it can be enjoyable but only for like 5-10mins before you get annoyed with all the bugs and crappy gameplay.
I'd much rather stick with DC than BF2 for right now, but i'll keep checking for patches and mods that start getting released.

the only things i see that will be better is the urban maps, zipline/grapling hooks, and the night vision... the expantion sounds good but then again bf42 expanitions dident work to well...
i just think they need ALOT more maps on BF2... all kinda of maps...
AND EVERY ONE STOP COMPLANING ABOUT THE BUGS... THE EXPANTION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BUGS THAT ARE IN BF2... ITS TWO TOTALY DIFFERENT TEAMS WORKING ON THE EXPANTION AND THE PATCHES FOR BF2...

I am going to buy this . it looks so ficking cool ! so what if theres grapple hooks and zip lines? its still incredibly cool and this is not what you would call an incredibly "realistic" one of the best online mottos ive heard is "If you want realism...join the military!" and you should if your that desperate.
Its a damned game! and the expansions are mods! check if you dont believe me.there just p2p. RTR was great just not a lot of servers SW not as good still not enough servers.
Bottom Line: If you dont like the game uninstall it! and quit complaining!

Well EA have skimped everything about this game, hmmmm one game type... is that all , by no means do i hate this game its just when i purchase a EA game i no im being cheated, with all EA expansions i feel that they could of put all the new features in the first introduction of the game. They even have a scroll bar for game types even though theres only 1 'Conquest', Why didnt they put all these new features into the game in the first place, 'no we cant do that, we want more money,(we dont care about customer satisfaction)' I think they should take a leaf out of Valves book! bringing out excellent patches with there games which include new skins and gametypes, even free games, or even beta's if you purchased one of there other games. Anyway i will most likely buy this Expansion anyway but i will feel cheated!!!! boohoo

I understand that frustration myself, I too was wondering where all the content was that was shown in Movie and screenshot footage from all over.
- Character Persistence and Growth. With in-game success, players increase their rank from recruit all the way to General and unlock new weapons, medals, and more.
- Take control of over 30 land, sea, and air vehicles, including tanks, helicopters, hovercraft, fast attack vehicles, and fighter jets.
Wasn't there a Blackhawk with Missiles?
Heck I even saw a Screenshot with something about playing MP3's in the game Menu system. Here. (http://www.totalbf2.com/images.php?img=features/screenshots/big/38.jpg)
I know it's an older Menu but to show it and not have it teases the public I think.
Also where's my binoculars that show in my Kit? There's a few kits with binoculars. Are these to "paint targets" as they say for laser designation?
I mean I understand why they didn't include all the content, we'd proly not have BF2 until this Fall if they waited but nobody looks at that aspect.
I for one am glad it came out when it did and I understand why they did it.
Hopefully the new fixes coming and new expansion will bring all, if not most of it to light.

The thing that cought my eye the most:
"The expansion pack is being developed by DICE Canada"
Can you all say BF Vietnam....
I was severly disapointed by BF-V. So I won't buy this expansion pack, until I see thousands of forum posts saying that it is the greatest expansion pack since the dawn of the world.
I don't trust DICE Canada to develop a well balanced, bug free and fun game.

I'm with you, Haunted... I will wait (probably forever, we'll see...)
You know what excites me? Community mods! I cannot wait to be able to join servers running the many new mods currently in the works. There will be many new maps, weapons, and even vehicles. I dont need to pay EA for something that our own gaming community can provide in higher quality.
In the mean time, it is vanilla (and hopefully soon patched) BF2 for me. I will go spend my $30 on HalfLife2 instead. Sorry, dont trust 'em at this point.

BF:V wasn't a technological breakthrough in the series it was more of a BF1.5 or BF1.25, sure it added cool new aspects but basically it was BF1942 with some nice new Environmental aspects and a some nice visuals other than that it wasn't much more DICE Canada worked with what they had, now they have a whole new engine in BF2, I don't think it'll disappoint.

ehm.. so you are saying that BF-V wasn't much more than an expansion pack to BF-1942 ?
Yhea I am with you on that :)
But this time they do develop an expansion pack for BF 2.
So I reall do not understand how this is different.
Actually BF-V provided more than this expansion. Since it had "...some nice new Environmental aspects and a some nice visuals..". But they screwed that up badly, so i fear they will do it again.
My problem with DICE Canada's work on Vietnam was the fact that they weren't able to provide a bug free and well balanced game (as said above). How should that change with this expansion pack ?
DICE Canada is incompetent.
The expansion packs for BF2 that i am realy lookinf forward to are mods. The mods for BF 1942 were what keept me going, I never bought an expansion pack, since they only provided a couple of new vehicles and maps (and much too few of those).
