Using the default key configuration, in a helicopter if you're level you can just let of the movement keys and it should auto-hover. You should slowly lose altitude so you might want to hit W every once in a while to maintain your altitude.

Hover is the S key!
For the plane the S key will allow you to take off vertically which can then be used to hover.
For the helicopters, once you have gained some altitude, release the keys and you should hover (as long as your chopper is level).

"S" is NOT the hover key
it is the "deceleration" key
or "reverse"
if you do not have a throttle
just go to your intended spot, hold S untill you slow down
and it will SORT of AUTO hover
you might have to tap W or S as needed
on MY system, the throttle is ignored, until I use it at least once per game
then the game tracks it
I try to reset it around 27% for BH
little more more for MEC
(microsoft sidwinder joystcik)
i still fly with WSAD and mouse for helo
(ie only use joystick for throttle)
and fly jets with joystick
its S held down to hover for USMC jets, i was playing on the gulf of oman, and i took off in a hover, i tried doing that in the MEC but it just startign going back
off topic: the dam is a fun place to fly with all the stuff in the way :D

S is the 'throttle down'...basically only use this if you are wanting to descend.
To hover all you have to do is let off of 'w' and keep your pitch level....the chopper will auto hover...
If you have to leave in a hurry, you can dip forward sharply and the air will rev you up enough to give your w key time to catch up...
yea thats for the heli, but when taking of in a jet holding S will hover up

for copter:
Simple hover:
1. Achieve level flight. :-)
2. Reduce collective to 29% If you don't have a dedicated throttle control on your joystick or gamepad, sucks to be you.
I typically dive towards whatever I want to hover over(flag, repair/rearm, passengers), flare at about 20 meters from/above target, then settle into the hover. Be careful coming in tail low doing this, bf2 does whacky stuff when you hit tail first, usually it pitches you into a very steep forward dive, which is of course BAD at that altitude, lol.
Most targets in this game have obstructed approaches, so you kind of have to popup over the obstacle, dive on the site, flare, then hover very low, unless you want to get nailed by aa, a jet, or another copter.
Things that aren't obstructed, just come in as close to the ground as you can comfortably fly and do a tiny flare to hover on target.
Any yaw on this stuff makes it 10 times harder to end up exactly where you want, in a stationary hover. Rudder is ok, and you'll want to be doing that before, during, and after, just to give your gunner the view he needs, or to watch the approaches where somebody in another vehicle might try to sneak up on you and catch you at your most vulnerable(stationary).
