I have no idea how to clearly explain what I am experiencing but here goes -
I can play BF2 fine at good frame rates with no problems but I do experience a sort of pause once every session where it seems as if the game is sort of readjusting itself.
The game will freeze for a second or two and sometimes the graphics will go insane then everything returns to normal the game will access the page file as if the map had just started and everything is fine for the rest of the day.
When I used to run with hardware sound I would sometimes lose my gun sounds and after this pause happened they would come back but this doesn't happen now I am using software sound.
I wonder if this maybe has something to do with PB checking for updates as it only seems to happen once every session.
It's not really a problem more an oddity and one of the strange glitches that you get used to when play the BF series.
My system -
AMD 3200+ XP
1gig 2-2-2-3 ram (400fsb)
X800 XT PE
Audigy 2

I'm assuming you're running all graphics settings on high?
If so, turn one or more down.
1 GB of RAM is not enough to run this game on all high settings. 1.5 to 2 GB are needed for that. Your videocard can certainly handle it..your RAM cannot.
You could try and see if Punkbuster is the issue by downloading PBWEB.EXE (http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbweb.exe) to your pb subdirectory and running it.
Also, in-game use the console commands:
pb_sleep 500
pb_writecfg
This will make pb wait longer between checks.

aaaaah you assume wrong :p
I'm running everything high except lighting and textures set to medium.
4 x AA, high filtering.
Thanks for the PB settings I'll try them tonight.
also i use pbsetup which is superior to pbweb.

Hehe..d'oh! RAM shouldn't be your problem then ;)
Try the punkbuster suggestion I made then and let me know how you make out.
What Audigy drivers are you using?

I was running the same settings as you with 1GB of RAM and it couldn't hack it. I still had to go to 1.5GB. I then turned everything up high and I'm 50MB from hitting the swap file every time I play. This game really needs 2GB.

Like I said I'm using pbsetup, which I think is actually better then pbweb, and I run it every time I run bf2.
Check this thread for details -

Thanks for the help but I don't plan on changing any drivers I'm happy with the performance / quality I'm getting from the ones I'm using now (especially after all the buggering about it took to acheive this happy balance) I realise the new audigy drivers introduce openal support but I found the audio quality poorer than my current set.
I'm don't really have a problem with this glitch just wondered if anybody else was experiencing it ;)

My set up can certainly hack it all I get is a few seconds of paging at the start of a new map then everything is smoooooooth until I hit this glitch then everything is smoooooooth once again :D
The strange thing is if I alt-tab out and check task manager my maximum commited charge is actually below 1 gb and bf2 max memory usage shows below 800mb, wierd.

I had the EXACT same issue.
I upgraded to 2 GB of RAM and am happy. But not everybody likes to spend money.
I'm hoping the v1.03 patch will address this.

I had a feeling it was a memory issue BF2 just seems to be rejigging itself in memory / pagefile.
Hopefully with 1.3 they might have actullay performed some optimisation.
I would upgrade to 2gb but for 2 reasons -
1. I only have 2 memory slots and 2 strips of 1 gb will decrease performance overall compared to the 2 strips of 512mb I have.
2. I currently have -£1500 in my bank account
