I have just confirmed the source of my severe lag, and I have searched for a solution, but I can't seem to find one. Maybe one of you has heard something about this?
I was on a server that played Strike at Karkand only, for this experiment. I stayed unsquadded for one whole battle, and had a picture perfect BF2 experience. Not even a hint of lag. Then, at the start of the next round, I joined a squad, and I immediately started getting "There is a problem with your connection" literally 25-33% of the time. Basically I can't really play the game :( Nobody else seems to be reporting this issue.
