Well you setup a server. When you insert the BF2 CD it should come up, and one of the options is "Create BF2 Server". However I must warn you that BF is a huge bandwidth hog. So your home connection will probably not do very well. It isn't the download speed that kills most people from having a home server, its the upload speed.

You have 2 options really...1 is with bots, and 1 is without.
If you are only having 1 or 2 friends join, try the bot match method (limited to 16 player maps without a mod/edit).
Simply load up a single player game and give your external IP address to your friends (go to http://www.whatismyip.com if you don't know) and have them go to Mutiplayer, Join Internet and click on Connect to IP and plug in your IP address there.
To host a true multiplayer only game if you're having a few friends join, the easiest way is to click on Multiplayer, and then Create Local. From there you can set up some basic settings, I would recommend setting a password for sure. Add the maps you want, and then when you're ready click Start Server in the lower right.
You may have to forward port 16567 to the internal IP address of the computer hosting the game on your router if you have problems. If you do not know it, simply click Start, then Run, and then enter 'cmd' and hit enter. At the prompt, type 'ipconfig' and hit enter.
If you want your server to show up on GameSpy (which you don't) then you need to forward more ports.
If you have to forward ports and don't know how...it really depends on what router you have.

To host the true MP, you guys must be connected to the same workgroup through your router.
