Nothing sad about it, more of a tribute to a historical event that we should all remember. I'm not trying to get into a political debate, but I remember those students were actively quoting the words of Thomas Jefferson, a good reminder that we should never take our freedom of speech and democracy for granted. That one man defiantly standing in front of tanks speaks a thousand words.

A Chinese man wrote a book saying he is hiding somewhere, but is alive and well. Tianemen Square is a great example of how a man with a desire for freedom can overcome a tyranical state. Even if it means living in mountains for the rest of his lifew after.
So if we made one with two planes going into a tower in an American city with fire and people jumping off would that be a good history lesson?

I know you aren't going to tell me that the chinese didn't torture and kill people who opposed their government. BS sounds like you're the one who needs to get a grip on reality everyone is trying to talk constantly about all the horrible things the US does and then flat out deny that other countries governments have done far worse
I remember watching that live when i was a kid i was about 12 at the time and I was up late watching all this going on it was really amazing to watch those people were extremely brave thats why it made such big news because of the consequences of their protests. The reason they didn't shoot him or run him over was because they knew the news cameras were filming all of it and China tries really hard show the world something other than what they really are
I'm not racist nor do i hate chinese people i just hate communists and the chinese government and i can guarantee you if the cameras hadn't been filming he would have been killed in an instant

Right, and just think those people where doing what you can legally do in the USA or any other democracy based government...hold a protest....but since that’s China and well, they are communist...the people got slaughtered for it....I cant believe people don’t know about this....I guess that’s why many things will always be the way they are....

You need to shut up and stop being a pretentious little prick. Just because you're from Europe and know a moment in history that any normally educated person knows, and know the capital of your country, does not somehow make you an expert on geography nor a history major. This is not directed at Europeans who do not hold these prejudices, but some of you guys need to realize that your feces does not smell sweeter than anyone else's. Hard fact to face, I know.

Tiananmen Square was the first thing that came to my mind. Not much worse than quoting Thomas Jefferson and getting tortured & killed. God damn Chinese communist bastards. Some day the communist chiefs will get what's coming to them by their own people. This place is long overdue for a revolution.
For anyone who has never stepped foot outside of US soil this is a grim reminder that corrupt, unjust governments exist around the world to this day. Freedom cannot be taken for granted. Once you leave this place you'll know what I mean.

From what I understand the families of the executed get sent a bill for the bullet(s)? - Nice touch..... I also wonder what happened to the tank driver - never gets mentioned much.
Don't get into a debate on national identities (Denmark/Copenhagen etc) - love your own country and tolerate those who are ignorant about it. Let your actions when overseas educate others - travel will show you why you should love your own country, and hopefully educate you why people love theirs as well. Stop crapping on others because they don't know about you.

what dont you get, he was EXECUTED!! It was on the BBC my parents remember! Its on the video of 1989 in focus.
' In a speech to the President's Club in 1999, Bruce Herschensohn — former deputy special assistant to President of the United States Richard Nixon and a member of the President Ronald Reagan transition team — reported that he was executed 14 days later; other sources say he was killed by firing squad a few months after the Tiananmen Square protests. In Red China Blues: My Long March from Mao to Now, Jan Wong writes that the man is still alive in hiding in mainland China'
From Wiki, he was killed and this whole topic is bringing back bad memories I myself am going to China on an exchange you dont know how much the place has changed if you started going 'comie scum I wonder if a blackhawk will come or someone will tank whore' they will take so much offence. China is a different place now, if you ever see Shanghai it will look like any other modern Asian city.

I bet you couldn't name the capitals of 10 of our states without using some sort of reference.
True, but the things I know of normal educated people in the US is very poor...

Also very true. I missjudged the people in here, though there is probably around 3.000. :P
I regret some of the things that I said and I respect the answers to me. Thank you!

It's not our fault that the most ignorant among us are the ones always asked to do polls and things like that. Our media likes to make the country as a whole look stupid. You can't believe half of what you hear see or read by the media and never trust what you hear from someone who heard it from someone who may or may not have ever been here
We have very intelligent people here in the US but we also have what is called the silent majority who are the intelligent and the well rounded individuals in this country
I know where Portugal is and could point it out on a map as well as Iraq Iran Afghanistan and most other countries in the world. i find geography interesting and yes i learned all of it in public schools and what i've discovered on my own. Like i said i can point out portugal on a map but i honestly didn't know we had a military base there. It may suprise you to know that our society doesn't revolve around the military most people know very little of what the mititary does simply because we don't parade our military around and drive missiles and rockets through town squares like some other countries.
So next time you go posting stuff about The United Stated please get your facts straight I have never posted anything about the people of Portugal Spain France Germany Italy etc. or their way of life education or any other opinions because i don't know about those things(although i'll make jokes about the french). But there seems to be so many people who talk with authority about my country who have no idea what they are speaking of.

Judging from your post alone, it seems to me that Portuguese people can't spell for crap, nor do they have any advanced grammatical skills. Oh sorry, is that an untrue generalization of the Portuguese citizenry? Exactly my point...
BTW IMO, your country hasn't made any significant historical contributions since the 1500's.

He was crushed by the godamn tank guys... Do you think that kind of military cares about one measly life? Yeah right man.
The protestor wasn't crushed. Seeing a column of tanks driving towards the protest area, the protestor blocked the column's path; the column continually tried to go around him but the protestor kept blocking them The driver of the first tank in the column was ordered to run over the protestor, but the tank driver refused to run over his own countrymen. The tank driver was later arrested and probably court martialed.
It isn't exactly clear what happened to the protestor afterwards. Reports and rumors say the protestor was executed but its also been said he is in hiding or even being held in prison. IMO, he was arrested and sent to prison to be "reeducated."

Hmm China is one of the few countries (and big countries) which is still Communistic. With the rising market of them I wonder what they will do with it... I hope it isn't a WW 3.. Though I speculate.
Anyways, it was a peaceful protest, until the army opened fire at a massed protest on Tiananmen Square, more than a 1000 students died. Only to get democratic rights. Now, this is 16 years ago, and if they did this, I wonder what will happen when the leader becomes rich. I think he's a maniac. As far as I know, the Chinese leader is still the same as the one who gave orders to the shooting of the students back in 1989.

Also the guy who was ruiling died, hmm like a long time ago, at least a few years back. The guy was also not a manic... he is still been given great respect in China. They didn't run over him. That's why the image is so enduring. He held up the column of tanks for a long time eventually being taken away by other students. No one really knows what happened to him. He certainly wasn't arrested or killed at the time. There are stories about him still being in hiding. China has never officially said anything about it.
He was crushed by the godamn tank guys... Do you think that kind of military cares about one measly life? Yeah right man.
No he wasnt crushed by the tank, after standing there for a few minutes a bystander rushed him away.
Take a closer look, there are two heros in this picture, the man standing there defying authority and the tank driver himself who could have easly kept driving.

what dont you get, he was EXECUTED!!
No, there's no proof, but if I remember the interview correctly, it was with one of the guys directly responsible admitting guilt on the execution. Very bad idea for that picture.
considering that no-one was even thinking of making fun of it at all, i think its appropriate. its just a re-enactment of the scene, if you think this is bad, you must hate all those civil war re-enactments that the yanks do, all fact-based war films (saving private ryan etc.) and indeed war based games (battlefield2!!!)

He wasn't a student. He was just a resident of Beijing. He, with his two shopping bags, jumped up on the tank and started yelling at the soldiers, calling them disgraces to their country. The tanks wouldn't run him over and tried to go around. It took them a while cause he kept getting in their way.
