<a href="http://erik.er.funpic.org/bfdl/">BF2 Auto Map Downloader</a> looks like a very nifty piece of software. It will automatically download the custom map that a server is running and then launch the game and connect to the server you chose. As with all software in an early stage there's a few bugs to fix, but it's worth keeping an eye on, this could revolutionize custom-map play.<blockquote>The program is very simple to use, works with Punkbuster and does not make the loading times longer if you already have the map. To find servers you can not use the in-game browser (why would anyone want to do that anyway?) You will have to use The All Seeing Eye unless you want to enter the IP by yourself.</blockquote>Check out <a href="http://erik.er.funpic.org/bfdl/">their site</a>. Grab the client file <a href="http://totalbf2.filecloud.com/files/file.php?user_file_id=53658">here</a> and server file (only for server admins!) <a href="http://totalbf2.filecloud.com/files/file.php?user_file_id=53660">here</a>.

Remember the server needs to be running the Auto Map Downloader too.

how does the program know where to get the files/map from?

im guessing the server, while running auto download too, specifies a ftp url where the program will download it from. just a guess, someone can confirm/deny this

... this could revolutionize custom-map play....

Hmm - that's a bit of a stretch.... - unless of course you're just referring to Battlefield 2.

If anything, this script brings BF2 a babystep closer to the modern age of gaming.

Valve still does it best, where no client side script or even map is needed for that matter.

If a server provider is running custom maps, he can host them on a webspace for download and configure his server.cfg file to point to that location via a "sv_downloadurl" parameter.

If a player tries to join the custom map session on the server without having the map installed, the script automatically pulls the map down from the site - and he can continue to join the server without ever having to leave the game or do anything else other than wait for the download to complete.

One would think, that with this concept having been available for the past couple of years, that DICE/EA would've built this capability in natively - like so many other things that were overlooked.

One would think, that with this concept having been available for the past couple of years, that DICE/EA would've built this capability in natively - like so many other things that were overlooked. The reason it wasn't included is because each map is something like 50mb or more.
That is no tiny size like a cs map
By the time it's finished downloading the map the game would be well in progress.
If you have a 1mb download speed it would take about 8-10 minutes just to download a map. Thats assuming the site you're downloading the map from is as fast as your connection.

I think this add-on isn't gonna be much use until EA create their "centralized map download site" - which we're told is "coming soon"....(and by the time thats ready they'll have already released their own map downloader as part of a patch)
