Custom maps in single player = CTD

I've downloaded a number of custom maps over the last few days - including Al Khafji Docks and El Alamein for BF2. They appear in the single player map list but, without exception, when I load them, just as I get to checking client data, I get a crash to desk top. I'm using Nvidia 78.01 on my card and nForce 6.66 - both WHQL. Neither card nor m'board are overclocked.

I've tried setting the video quality setting to medium and high - but still get CTD.

Any suggestions please as these look to be good maps.

Custom maps don't generally work with single player.. and why does it check client data on single player..
