View Full Version : The Swastika Issue

Just to make his clear: I do not support nazi symbols or any kind of nazi or racist activity of any kind.
What I would like to discuss is the use (or lack of such) of swastikas in Company of Heroes. I think it would be so much more realistic and bring more feeling to the game if they used swastikas to the same extent that the nazis did. Being historically correct, for me, is important in computer games. Do you really believe that anyone would be offended if there were swastikas in the game? Or would it just be the media who would rip the game and all kind of computer gaming apart (as usual)?

I think the Relic team is trying to keep the Germans in the game far away from being Hardcore Nazis. So that people do not feel bad when playing them, but even tho some units might have been, they dont have the Germans making racists remarks when you select them say against Jews.

If you go to the relic forums the have an explination there. It is because not all germans were nazis so therefore that would be stereotypical. And Nazism was a belief and had nothing to do with an army. And since they are called Axis that title included more then just germans.

Relic walked very carefully on this issue, they are a big developer and tried to portray the war without the Natzi influence, and i think they done a pretty good job in ruling it out while still making you feel you are fighting evil.

Well of course when playing as the axis it feels more like youre controling soldiers rather than nazis. I only meant this out of a game setting kinda feeling. I dont think the game is any less good because it doesnt have swastikas in it. I do indeed belive that Relic did the best thing not to have swastikas in the game, what I wonder is does it really have to be that way?

I could careless either way. It's not important to have it. If they did have it I wouldn't complain. but they don't have it, and people still complain (or atleast bring it up as an issue).

I like it when you move the engineers and they're shouting at you: "Was wolln sie denn, was wolln sie?" :D

Ok maybe "issue" was the wrong word to choose as a topic in this thread. I don't have any problem with them not having any swastikas in the game. What I'm trying to say is that I wish the world would just get over germanys past mistakes to the extenet that you can at least have these kinda symbols in games and at least play a german campaign.

The best part is that there is a German AND British campaign and are totally non related. Plus the effects of one mission will affect another and if you adjust the camera angle you'll be able to see the next city you're going to off in the distance.

Have you heard some of the stories that happend in the UK?
A British Airways staff member was sacked for refusing to take off her cross, she took them to court though.

But people must understand that obviously the stupid masses are gonna get whiny if you wear/use stuff like this?
Well, thats obvious;).
Still, it sucks that its now bad to use an otherwise good and (in my opinion) really cool looking symbol.
