Since you don't require a disk to play the game, would my friend be able to install in onto his PC, install the patches and be able to play in campaigns and skirmishes?

It's against the law (Copywrite infringment), but you also run the risk that you won't be able to play online again. You won't be able to play multiplayer together either if it even allows you to play at all.
