View Full Version : EA Downloader Service
<a href="https://www.ea.com/">EA</a> just launched a new content delivery service labelled <a href="http://downloader.ea.com/">EA Downloader</a>.<blockquote>EA downloader is a lightweight PC application (approximately 5MB) that downloads EA games in the background. It keeps you up-to-date with the latest patches, trailers, and new game content without requiring login every time you play. And it’s free!</blockquote>Even better news for all us Battlefield fans is that the first game to be launched on this service is the Battlefield 2 expansion pack, Special Forces! You can buy and pre-load the game <a href="http://www.downloader.ea.com/en_US/bf2sf">right here</a>, right now. The game is set to be unlocked on November 22 at 1pm EST.<br><br>PS: Total Battlefield 2 will have 10 free Special Forces download vouchers to hand out very soon, stay tuned!

I don't like the idea of a background process just for EA Games. It reminds me to much of steam which I hate with a pashion.
If I want an update for my game I will go download it. EA games makes me made enough by putting their little popup advertisement when you login on BF2. Out of common courtessy they could have put a "Do not remind me again" check box.

ah somethin like steam
sounds like a good way to avoid shipping fee and keep in touch with EA's new products
it will be useful when updating a game that has patches pumping out often
but i never liked steam i wouldn't get it

Its probably a pretty good idea for aussies given the release date here is 28/11/05. The downloader says installation will be complete for playing on the 22nd of november, so if ya keen to play early aussies, maybe you should seriously consider the downloader.

Wow - notice how they have different activation dates for Europe and US (22nd in US, 25th in Europe) ? I thought the whole point of an online download service was the ease of simultaneous worldwide releases?

The difference between this and Steam is that Steam was designed to give the game developer (valve) a bigger share of the pie by cutting out the publisher.
This gives the puiblisher (EA) a bigger slice of the pie.

Thats the US release date. The EA downloader service is discrimating based on your location when you can 'activate' the SF download. So you may have to wait until the retail release date anyway, which is stupid.

I've done some comparsion calculations for Aussie players
On Gamesmarket.com.au special forces DVD or CDROM costs $34.95 in AUS$, Which translates to $25.5294 USD$. It comes with CD and fancy box art
If you EA's Downloadable service it would cost $29.99 USD$. Thats roughtly $41.0496 AUD$ after exchange rate convertion. You dont even get fancy expensive and packaging
Overall it's cheaper to buy the game from online and instore retailer. Rather than EA'S downloadable service, Which you would expect to be cheaper. But its clearly not!

yeh. why do they even ahve ythis downloader crap, how lazy do they think we are. i would rather go to the shop and buy a hard copy. i wold only buy it online from downloader if it came out early, now we know that its gonna be the same as release day, what a waste of time.

If it meant I could play it a day early I would prefer this method. Otherwise I think I'd rather have a disc with cd key for installation.
But hey, that's just me. I did purchase HL2 through Steam, I guess I'm ok as long as I remember my password.

I've got this email when I asked EA if I could have it 3 days early (I'm from Europe) :
"Greetings,
Thank you for contacting EA Online Store Support.
Please be informed that the installation date for Battlefield 2: Special Forces for European players is November 25, 2005.
If there is anything else we may do to assist you please do not hesitate to reply back to this email.

An update on the DL of SF Via EA
It seems to have a timer attached to the program I downloaded the 1GB program then it comes up with a box that has a time till release in days and time, so I advanced my internal PC clock so as to by-pass the PC system to get it to install that worked, so far!
I got an Error 32791:6
When trying to install Battlefield 2 Special Forces Expansion Pack after downloading the files.
It then says ready to install so I click the install Now button on the EA Downloader it comes up with "Getting ready to install 1/3" with the installation loading bar at 0%.
Then a separate box comes up with Error 32791:6
Poxy EA Not showing us what the errors mean!!!!!!!
Im going to re DL overnight to see if its a corrupt file error??
BTW the DL file is 1.3 GB !!!
Note the UK unlock date :-2005 11 25
SF DL File showing :- downloadcomplete = TRUE
If I cant overcome the following you may as well stick with your Pre-orders. Was worth a try!
I have changed the "unlockrange = 2005 11 25 2099 12 31" to bring it in range to unlock and cut and pasted it into notepad.
Deleted the original file that contained the following but the file just replenishes it's self.
Any ideas on how to sort this out???

I used my UK address and Post code when asked for my bank details so as they matched up, I don't know what would happen if you choose US.
The main program must regenerate the file that I previously talked about also the main file and download source must have a timer / calendar inbuilt with an international Country sorter ... good for them bad for me.
Well, I'll just have to learn from it all I guess.

Let me get this straight...
EA eliminates all packaging AND shipping costs AND they drastically cut the distribution time, yet they still charge the same price as the boxed version and it can't be played until the retail release date.
What a joke!!!
I'm all for online software distribution but there needs to be an incentive to the customer to make it viable. All the current system does is increase their profit margin and leave you without a backup.

Yes you can DL the game now.
It only saves the game program file to your HD.
It dose not open / install.
You will only be able to install it (the game) Via the EA downloader program when the correct time and date for the official release for the particular part of the world you live in comes round ;)
All fact :)

The only thing I'm curious about is why is the fre@king clock wrong?
I downloaded it, I downloaded SF, its running with its little countdown clock. I'm in the US so I should be somewhere around 9 days 1hr and so many minutes...
Except my clock says 11 days 1h and so many minutes. As though according to their clock me apparently buying it through their service as to eliminate having to go to the store that day and just being able to install and play right away is bull and I'll get to play it 2 days later?

WooSH Im not quite sure what all that jargon means aspire m9.
But my guess is that like a box that needs a key the key will be requested by the SF game files stored on your PC via EA Via The EA downloader.
A single function switch that needs more than One Key turned at the same time (but in different locations) to get the game to install.
FYI i'm not trying to hack it, just figure out how it works.
Just to unlock it or find out what the error massage means I have asked EA about the Error but surprise surprise.... no response..
