View Full Version : Update on Crash to Desktop...
I have searched, but seems like no one has my problem. Did we ever figure out how to get the game to not crash to the desktop? I have the usual, play for 10-15 minutes, and then suddenly without warning go straight to the desktop, no BSOD or anything... I can then go back to the game, and to the same server, my points will still be up, but it just does it again 10-15 minutes later. It happens very randomly, doesen't happen on explosion, fire, or anything, it is SUPER random, one time it happened right on the kit selection screen...
I have reinstalled, reformatted, etc, etc, etc....
Did anyone ever have any true fixes?
Thanks all
Jason

How chronic is the problem?
Do you have any other resource intensive games that don't crash?
Has BF2 ever been stable for you?
Does this happen with single player as well?
What you are discribing sounds like it could be a heat or RAM issue.
Very likely a problem on your end.
BTW, there is a tech support section on these forums that this should prolly live in.
i had it happen to me 4 times today, all right after my comp spent 10 min loading the server/map.

What fixed mine was a better psu 400w upto 580w, but there does appear to be multiple reasons for the crash.

ive had it a fair few times before.
To be honest though for me it was driver releated, at the time i rolled back too a previous nvidia driver and it worked fine. Now its not a propblem with the latest drivers.

Try updating your motherboard's bios, that's what solver the problem for me.

I used to have the same problem. My computer, while running BF2, would also lag or reduce frame rate it made it seem like I was moving at a different speed than every one else or floating even. It only did this on some maps, not always same map seemed to be random, and not on same server, random also.
What I did was reinstall BF2, I had to uninstall, reinstall 2 times to get it to work. Then I installed patch 1.03 and no other patches, it will runn ok like this, updated Punk Buster and have been running about 10 days now with no further problems. I dont know if this will fix your problem but it fixed mine...Red

I crashed to desktop once and thought it strange so I checked the temp of my vid card and it was hitting 74C. Pretty high i thought. BF2 is demanding on the vid card. The crashed happended when I forgot to turn on my side fans. When the fans are on by vid card temp is around 60C when playing. Never forget anymore and have not had any CTD since.
All the crashes might be associated wtih an hot vid card. Just a thought.

I just built a new comp for my b-day a week ago, my old 1 an AMD XP 3000, 1gig ram, 9800 256agp, XP Pro would crash to the desktop, freeze or sound would freak then freeze consantly, every once in awhile I would get some good gameplay on MED settings. If I was fortunate enough to accually exit the game Windows would chug & a reboot was nessary.
My new comp AMD 64 3700 1Mb L2, 2gig RAM, 6800GT 256 PCIx16 & Win XP Pro 64bit Ed. has run BF2 high settings flawless for a week now. I can play for awhile exit out & Win 64 does not slow down & go back and play some more. Windows 64bit has better memory management.
I now am usually first to spawn in, my fps 60-80 most of the time when it gets real buisy like a big street fight 10 or so players, tanks, apcs & artillary go'n off all in view it'll dip to 45 briefly with settings on high.
The biggest difference for me is CQB, I am winning alot more because the upclose battles are so much smoother.

All of your post are correct .. memory ..video cards ..motheboard bios ..power supplies may all have something to do with it but if you are persistently having this problem and cant trce the problem the quickest and easiest solution is to lower your graphics settings and maybee your sound settings ....
It used to happen to me all the time on my old system whenever a SU-34 or F-15 droped bombs on me or when artilary was falling near me...
