Another patch has just been released to tie in with the shipping of Battlefield 2's first expansion pack, Special Forces. Released in North America today, the expansion should become available to us European's on Friday. The patch for both Battlefield 2 and the new expansion weighs in at a hefty 280 MB and has a number of bug fixes as seen below. The main focus of this patch though is to allow those with the expansion pack to play on vanilla Battlefield 2 servers.
- Fixed a crash when users switch weapons using the mouse wheel while piloting a bomber (SU-34, F-15 and J10) in core BF2 maps.
- Removed the Grappling Hook and the Zip Line from kits from "The Iron Gator" map.
- Fixed single player loading screens to match map selection image.
- Fixed an issue in the menus so that users can click on BF2:SF ribbons to view the descriptions.
- Fixed an issue in the Browser so that BF2:SF servers are now represented with a green "2" icon.
- Global improvement of collision detection on the Grappling Hook and the Zip Line.
- Fixed damage state artillery icon on the 3d map when an artillery is destroyed.

Grab the patch from any of these mirrors:

Yes 1.12 > 1.03

God knows what happened to 1.04, 1.05, 1.06, 1.07, 1.08, 1.09, 1.10, & 1.11 guess they never managed to fix the red/blue bug.

is it me or the patch hints that BF2:SF tools are not available on the only 8 maps packed with (ie patch removed zip line and grapling hook from iron gator map).

I mean most of us want to buy it for those new things in particular just to learn that they may not be in (random ) 50% of the game...

see, my D: drive is reserved for pr0n and games (where i have plenty of space left btw), but the installer wants to put his 3gb temp crap on my E: sytem drive where i only keep windows and my programs
ill try some workarounds from the previous patch install problem threads now...

RE: BF2 patch:

They're FIXING SF already??????????????

EA never fail to amaze me.

I really hope a BF2 beater is just round the corner..... perhaps even a company that tests their product before it goes out the door too, or maybe I'm asking too much.

The site says the new unlocks will be usuable in normal BF:2
Does that mean I dont need SF to use these new weapons? Because i already have most of the guns unlocked...
Or only SF people can use these weapons? Can i pick them up from dead SF players bodies?
I dont get it :hmm:

Spookie
11-22-2005, 09:27 PM
It appears those who have SF only can use the guns. Though if they die you can no doubt pinch one of them.

edit: Yep, I think I'm right. You can see the icon for the new gun but only swaps it for my original unlock.

It sucks that they're forcing a 280MB patch on us, while still not fixing the red name bug but I think there's also a good side to this I think.
And that is that someone could make a mod that allows players to use the BF2:SF and BF2 unlocks, and if a server or two loads this up we could get to use them.

Patch v1.12
================================================== ==============================

IMPORTANT
- If you have installed the 1.12 patch to core Battlefield 2 and then installed

bomber (SU-34, F-15 and J10) in core BF2 maps.
- Removed the Grappling Hook and the Zip Line from kits from
"The Iron Gator" map.
- Fixed single player loading screens to match map selection image.

CHANGE of VIDEO SPECS
- GeForce FX 5900 family:
GeForce FX 5900 Ultra
GeForce FX 5900
GeForce FX 5900XT
GeForce FX 5950 Ultra
GeForce FX 5900ZT
GeForce PCX 5900
- For these cards, the default video settings have been changed to LOW.

UPDATE TO GRAPPLING HOOK AND ZIP LINE DESCRIPTION

GRAPPLING HOOK
- The GRAPPLING HOOK is part of the Assault and Anti-tank kits. Throw it using
the fire or alternate fire buttons. Press "E" to get on and off of the rope.
Use the direction keys to climb the rope. The rope will connect to any static
object in the world, which means it will not work on terrain or vehicles. Any
Assault or Anti-Tank kit can pick up any grappling hook, even those from other
teams, as long as you do not already have one in your kit at the time.

ZIP LINE
- The ZIP LINE is part of the Special Forces and Sniper kits. Use the fire button
to shoot the line and use the alternate fire button to check if the target is a
viable connection point or not. Once the line is in place, use "E" to get on.
You will slide down the line automatically. Any Spec-Ops or Sniper kit can pick
up any zip line, even those from the other team, as long as you do not already
have one in your kit at the time.

================================================== ==============================
BATTLEFIELD 2™: SPECIAL FORCES SPECIFIC FEATURES
================================================== ==============================

IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING EXPANSION PACK AND MULTIPLAYER
When Battlefield 2: Special Forces is installed, a new update is applied. However,
with this new content it is not possible to play on the Internet or LAN with
Battlefield 2 1.03 users.

To be able to play together with Battlefield 2 core users, you need to have
update 1.1 or later.

- In order to play Special Forces in multiplayer on the internet you will need
to download the latest patch from EA.

NIGHT VISION
- The NIGHT VISION is bound to the "7" key by default. When it is enabled, it
will allow you to see better in dark areas. There is a battery life on the
goggles that will deplete with usage and replenish when not in use.

Use the fire button to
shoot the line and use the alternate fire button to check if the target is a
viable connection point or not. Once the line is in place, use "E" to get on.
You will slide down the line automatically. Any Spec-Ops or Sniper kit can pick
up any zip line, even those from other teams, as long as you do not already have
one in your kit at the time.

FLASH BANG
- The FLASH BANG is used to stun other players. The FLASH BANG is part of the
Assault kit. Use it like a hand grenade. When it detonates, anyone in the effect
area will be deafened and those looking at the explosion will be blinded as well.

TEAR GAS
- The TEAR GAS will linger in an area for a short time. The TEAR GAS is part of the
Support kit. While active, anyone in the cloud will become affected. While affected,
players will be blind and unable to sprint. Use the GAS MASK (default key "8") to
avoid being affected by the gas. Once affected however, the gas mask will not
cure you. It will only prevent further affects.

UNLOCKS
- By playing on a Battlefield 2™: Special Forces map, you will gain the priviledge
of being able to unlock some of the Battlefield 2™: Special Forces weapons for use
in regular BF2 maps. These unlocks are considered to be tier 2 unlocks, where as
the original unlocks are considered to be tier 1. You must first have unlocked
the tier 1 weapon for a particular kit before you can access and unlock the tier 2
weapon. As an example, if you must unlock the G3A3 for the assault kit before you
can unlock the F2000 for the assault kit.

GRAPPLING HOOK AND ZIP LINE RELOAD TIME
- The grappling hook and zip line take roughly 15 seconds to reload at the resupply
crate.

Same problem for me...again...

I have a 6Gb System drive with only windows on it.

I have my temporary file location set to my 120Gb D: , my download location is also on this disk, and my game is installed on a 120Gb G:

So why the hell do they simply check for space left on system drive? ITs ridiculous!!

With previous patches I have been able to move the files on my C: not currently in use to one of the other drives while I install, but even doing that doesnt free up enough space.

Winzip and Winrar are having a hard time opening the installshield also, so are there any workarounds left to either force it to bypass this space check, or to simply extract the files from the installer?

Let me see if I can get this right. I have been playing BF2 since June. As of this morning, I was playing v1.03.

I bought the Special Forces expansion pack and installed it. Said it was patching too. So I went to play and NO servers showed up. I redid the filters, exited and restarted. No servers.

So I ran just BF2 and saw NO servers! I went to my favorites and they were all in red and said "you have a newer version than selected server" when I clicked on it.

Why am I not getting any servers? Because I need to dl'd the 280mb patch? Well I am downloading it, been for past 3 hours and have another 2 hours to go. So much for broadband......

So is that why I am not seeing any servers in BF2 or BF2: Special Forces? Not having the patch yet?

Won't we all have to dl'd the patch eventually? I have no servers showing up anymore, I need to patch.

I wouldn't worry about the lag. This occurred with the initial release of earlier patches. As more servers become patched, more lag free games will exist. Right now it's very limited number of servers and players from all parts of the world trying to connect to the same server.

I am having trouble with the patch also. I have noticed two different patches. I'm downloading as I type this. I already downloaded one from 3dgamers using bit torrent, but I get the Patching Failed sign.

I have tried to re-install BF2 with no luck.

I'm curious, is there a difference between these two files other than the fact that one is zipped and the other is an executable? Perhaps one that we're only suppose to use on SF and one to use on BF2 core?

Hey all. First time poster so be nice.

Question. When I build my next compy, which is in a few days will I need to download all the patches or just this one?

I was able to download the new patch from FileCloud in 30 minutes with no issues on my current system. I got right on and played. So if you're out there waiting 3 hours then I suggest FileCloud.

For the person that's getting the black screen then to desktop, could it be your firewall? When I first launched the game I did get the black screen then Norton asked me if I wanted to allow B2 to get out. Just a thought.

Thanks

On download times;

I checked last night @ 10PM on fileshack as a registered user; # 400-ish in the que and a 45 minute download when you got there. (my clanmates were in process.)

Didn't bother and played old version/servers for the night.

Woke up this morning 8AM EST and fileshack had no wait & 5 minute download without even bothering to login.

Load it off-peak and avoid the wait.

Ok here's the scoop on the patch.

I don't own Special Forces but have fought in a few battles since I patched BF2. Here's what I learned.

1. The patch is mainly for Special Forces.
2. BF2 gets a ton of new weapons. Each class has not one but 2 locked weapons.
3. The unlock system is progressive. For example, the Assault class starts with the M16/noob tube. From there, you can upgrade to the GP30. Next you can upgrade to the F3000 with grenade launcher. :) You have to do it in order though.
4. There are 3 new G36 variants available for unlock now. The engineer finally gets a decent rifle, a medium-strength G36. The support class gets a heavy G36M, and the medic can unlock a very nice medium powered G36.
5. Some class gets to unlock a flashbang grenade. I've been flashed twice, and it's very effective. Screen goes white, it's hard to hear and you can't sprint until it wears off.
6. Just like with the second tier of unlocked weapons, if you kill a guy using the new third tier weapons, you can grab his pack and use the new weapon.

Before any of you get too excited, keep in mind that these are all big boy weapons. You can't unlock any of the new stuff until you unlock old stuff (or if you're dedicated you can stick with one class and get one unlock after another just for that class).

-=+XoX1de+=-']Alright this patch is officiallly not compatible with RAID 0 GRrrrr:mad:

The patch on the EA site fixed my "patching failed" problem, it does have a different file name to the 1 i was previously trying.

Maybe EA fixed the patch?

I think I'll wait for a bit to download and patch...seems that some people are having problems.

That, and it doesn't seem that the 1.12 patch doesnt do much beyond get BF2 ready for SF. BF2 STILL has a lot of unfixed issues.

I did not get a patching failed error, just when I tried to run BF2 after the update I got a black screen and then kicked bback to desktop. Tried complete un-install several times with same results. Am now back to the patched 1.03 version and playing fine. Also I have a new DXDIAG error dinput8.dll not loading, any ideas???

Which one did you use?

bf2_patch_112.exe

or

bf2_v1_12update.exe

The bf2_v1_12update.exe is the one that worked for me after a few uninstalls. The bf2_patch_112.exe would give me problems like not getting to the login screen or if I start a game it would crash back to the desktop halfway through loading a map.

I tried both with the same results. I now believe the problem is with my video card, ATI X850 XT 256MB PCIE w/5.11 drivers. I left a tech post with ATI and hopefully they will look into this and release ANOTHER driver update. I think there have been something like 4 or 5 since BF2 was released. -sigh- back to the 1.03 patch ver to play some more.

Thanks for the suggestion though...

Yet another reason not to buy ATI.

Just wanted to add a fix for alot of people that have been having trouble patching the game. The stupid patch looks at a windows registry key to see how much free space you have to unpack it. By default the path is c:\program files. Many of you just install Windows on that partition/drive but have your games and apps in bigger drives and therefore don't have 3gb free space to unpack the patch. Furthermore many don't even install Windows to the c: drive, but this registry key is always the same.

To work around the patch path problem, crack open regedit and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion

Don't unfold the key, just click on it to get data in the right pane. Find the line on the right that says this:

ProgramFilesDir C:\Program Files

Right click on it and select modify. Before you change it, right click and copy the data out then change the key to whatever you want (d: or whatever has a ton of free space, more than 3 gigs). Close regedit and launch the patch. It will then unpack to whatever you specified. When you're finished, open regedit back up, modify that key, and paste the old entry back in. Works like a champ.

Thanks for the additional input afro. My problem does not involved the update installing successfully, it does that. I have a 120gb c: drive so no space probs. As for ATI, I have never had problems with them in the past and the card I have in my current machine is one of the most powerful they have offered. I just dont know why EA did not include these cards in their release of BF2. Per some other posts, one would think a company would create an app that was supported on as many different platforms as possible to get the highest sales...oh well, being in the IT industry for 20+ years should have cured me of that wishful thinking a LONG TIME AGO! LOL:laugh:

Yeah the fix I posted isn't for your problem. It's for the problem where it says you don't have enough hd space free. In your case I'd just be patient, it can take awhile to unpack and prompt you to continue.

:cussing: I finally convinced ATI that my problem was driver related and I hope to hear back from them when a new updated driver will be released. Once that happens, I will post another update with the results...unless of course EA releases a update for the update!!! :ar15:

Did I get the word update in enough???

Cool smileys, huh!:nerr:

Well after running 1.12 for a few days I've gotten nasty little problems too. I have a special dual-6600-on-one-card SLi card from Gigabyte. It was fine until 1.12 now the graphics go nuts after awhile. First I get horrible video lag, then the machine hard freezes and goes into some loop trying to drop in and out of DirectX 3d mode (flashes all black then very dark grey over and over). Sometimes before it does this it'll start making textures and objects disappear, turn black or white, etc.

I decided to hit Gigabyte's site and get the original drivers for this card. Screw the 81.xx series, worst drivers ever (or BF2 is just exceptionally hard on this card and driver). I may try to play Special Forces again to see if the framerate still sucks since I went back to the 77.72 drivers.

oh, if you get the you need at least 3000m of free disk space error, its cause you have a partitioned hard drive, and your c drive isnt big enough(this happened when i installed my bf2 onto my mates comp, i just made the partioned c:// bigger)

Whoa.. so hey ive just started playing bf2 again, and ive been downloading the patch for a full 8 hours already! and its only 52.6mb!! Its downloading from EA aswell! I have a 2mb connection too.

It seems everytime a patch is released, it increases in size, so will that mean that patch 4.00 or something like that will have a file size of like ****ing 2GB!!!

I mean cmon EA! what do they expect people to do... My computer is gonna need a vacation from downloads after this...:(

I spent almost 2 hours cleaning up lil files off my C drive trying to get this crap patch to install. Your Fix Saved me from that leading to some sanity issues...
