View Full Version : EA Downloader/Special Forces Error
EA (http://www.eagames.com/) posted a short community update to let us know they're working on the installation errors some people are experiencing when running Special Forces.
We have discovered (as some of you have) an installation problem with a limited number of EA gamers who downloaded Battlefield 2: Special Forces through EA's Downloader. If your account is affected, you will see the following error when you try to install the expansion pack:
“BF2CDKeyCheck.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”
We apologize for this problem and are working quickly to resolve it. We will contact the gamers affected by this issue via email later today with a solution.
Read the update on the official BF2 site (http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/editorial.jsp?src=eadownloader).
Update: The error has been fixed, details here (http://www.eagames.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/editorial.jsp?src=eadownloader).

Good good, nice to see EA/dice working hard to fix things as soon as possible.
And before somebody moans, they probably couldnt have fixed this earlier due to the fact that 20 bug finders dont match dozens of thousands of gamers.
Should be fixed for the EU release then... goody.
*sits staring at countdown*

SF shouldnt have been released yet, BF2 is worse than Vietnam for bugs... This should be their priority.

There's probably 20 million BF2 owners worldwide, that's £600,000,000 gross takings.
Just read that figure again, and realise that EA/DICE should have a f*ck&ng ARMY of developers / testers making sure the product reaches the customer a damn sight better than it has done.
EA are only in this business for profit, customer service and quality of service is wayyyyyy down their list of priorities. and that REALLY sucks.

Please GET A CLUE.
I will personaly pour water all over my mother board then jump on it a few dozen times if that figure of £6,000,000,000 is correct... or the 20,000,000 customers.

LOL, D'oh! - just done a bit of research...
Ok, even if they sold 2 million copies (more realistic), that would be 2M x £30 (avg shelf price) that's still £60M takings
We're not talking peanuts here.
Dont forget how much Gamespy must have paid EA for their involvement - and the revenues they get from EA BF2 game servers.

EA/Dice dont get all the money from that £30.
First you have the stores commission.
Then Shipping.
Then manufacturing the boxes/manuals.
Then the cd's.
That will be £10 proffit if they are Extremely lucky.
Then theres the cost of servers, and paying for marketing, plus the Developers wages.
And gamespy didnt give EA money..... seriously get a clue or some facts and stop spouting your opinions as truth.

You're right, my heart bleeds for the executives at EA, I wonder if there's a donations tin setup at my local supermarket....
Mod communities offer better support than EA do.
- How can this be???? - Because the community has passion.
Dont get me wrong, it's a decent game and none of us would be here without it - but EA certainly shouldnt be congratulated for their customer service efforts.

Ok, I'm sorry - I admit it, my comments are not based on solid facts at all.
But please dont kid yourself into believing that EA/DICE didnt make 100's if not 1000's% profit.
:D
Hey, Yellow_Knight, which server do you frequent? - fancy a knifing duel?

I don't care about the company making profits, that's what they are in the business for.
That said, this error does not only affect those people that purchased the game through the EA downloader, it also affects those that purchased the CD version of the game, as I did.
Ever since the 1.1 and/or 1.12 patch, I cannot play BF2 original, nor can I play SF. I spent 40$ (CN) to render both my games unplayable?
I'm not big on flaming a company because of a bug, but if the game works fine one moment (since 1.03 I haven't had any real issues) and now both the original and expansion kick me to my desktop, what does that say about the developer and/or publisher?
I am a big EA fan, they have released some great games in the past, and are still struggling to find us great developers (Lionhead, DICE, NHL series), but the amount of time they require to have their great games function properly is ridiculous. I purchased a game at a store, expecting it to work properly the day it gets released, as I do with any game I purchase.
I bought Call of Duty 2 from Activision for example. The game ran without flaw, and the patches are for "small" issues, never one of the "I cannot play the game at all" errors. I'm noticing a trend in the BF series game releases: We are their extended BETA testers, except most BETAs don't cost you to play.
I'm just really frustrated that a game could cause me so many problems. If I had gotten the game illegally and I ran into some problems, then I guess the fault is on me. The fact that I purchase my games, and expect them to work, should not be too much to look forward to, and this goes to those idiots that tell everyone "it's just a game". I agree 100%, but I PAID to play a functioning game, not to install it, and have 2 games completely stop working in multiplayer.
I guess on a good note, I can still play Call of Duty 2, at least BF2: SF didn't screw that game up.
Here is a small recap of my problems since the purchase:
. SF cdcheck installation error
. BF2 and SF both crash to desktop in multiplayer
. Server listing issue from last night seems to be resolved
. My filters are set to "only display same version #" but I still get unpatched servers in my listing
I don't know if there are any more, considering I can't connect to play.
PEACE

**UPDATE**
EA Downloader Fix
EA's Customer Service has been hard at work and have come up with a fix for the EA Downloader install problem for Battlefield 2: Special Forces. To obtain the fix (at least for those of you who didn't get an email from EA last night) visit the EA Customer Support web site and click on the "Ask a Question" tab.

EA Customer Support (like most game supports) they couldn't support a **** up in a brewery by alcoholics......
(when a support team dose not know what the answer is they don't answer in the hope that it goes away........the three monkey syndrome ......... hear no evil, see no evil, speek no evil,)
I contacted EA with an error issue on there SF EA downloader via this method when the EA downloader was first available and still no response.................
Not a good attitude EA !

Ok..
So, I finally got somewhere. I can now play BF2 original, and now I'm trying BF2 SF.
Here is what I did.
. Backed up my profiles
. Uninstalled BF2 Special Forces
. Uninstalled BF2 Original
. Rebooted computer
. Installed BF2 Original
. Updated to 1.03
. Rebooted
. Updated to 1.12
. Installed BF Special Forces.
Now, things for BF2 original seem to be back to normal, however...
I have just checked my SF, and twice I've been kicked from the server, and they seem to follow the trend others have gotten, here are both errors:
. Connection lost to the server
. This server only allows players with unmodified content to join. Revert your versoin to Battlefield 2 to the current official version to join.
The last one seems to happen on most of the servers I try.
Anyone got an idea?
EDIT: I've tested now with over 20 servers, some with people in it, some without, I mostly get the "unmodified content" error. WTH is going on. I've also noticed that when I connect to a server, I can't see the server's IP/port information. I only see (:0) I hope EA/DICE will read this, as I think this may have something to do with it.

My freaking game is taking 5 hours to freaking download. THATS BS. I DIDNT BUY IT ONLINE SO IT WOULD DL THAT SLOW.
I could have went to the store and bought it 100 times already.
FFS. YOU HAVE TO PATCH TO 1.12 AGAIN AFTER INSTALLING SF.

:( OK...so still no luck.
One other thing I've noticed now, is that if I click on the "community tab" in-game, I see two things, one being the expansion, but other for BF2 original is displayed as:
ID = BF2
Name=MODDESC_BF2_TITLE
Version 1.12
The special Forces one is
ID=xpack
Name=Battlefield 2: Special Forces
Version=BF2 1.1
Once again, anyone? Bueler?

Sorry to hear of your bad luck bros. I never trust anything that is downloadable. Think of it this way: If you ever lose your HDD, you'll need to redownload it. If you have the purchased copy, you have it physically with you.
What does FFS mean?
So, you're telling me that I need to install 1.12 again after having installed in the order I did? So, essentially:
. BF2 original install
. 1.03
. 1.12
. Install BF2 SF
. Install 1.12 again?
If so, that is the stupidest patching that I have ever experienced,
Thanks for the input
Well, after all the troubles I've had, it's now been resolved.
Following the steps I took, and patching with 1.12 a second time helped everything. I can now properly (as properly as it can be) see the server listing, approx. 500 servers, and I cannot to servers and play.
I've also unlocked 4 new weapons, which is pretty damn cool. I think I can play them in BF2 now, which is going to be sweet.
I hope reading this will help others resolve their problems.
Only complaint is a little laggy on the server side, but other than that, great gameplay, great expansion. I'm going to have fun with this.
PEACE

That was my original try-out, it didn't work. I would get a "crash to desktop" whenever I would try and connect to a multiplayer game.

So when I get home I should:
- Save my profiles and stuff. (HOW TO DO THAT?)
- Uninstall freakin' BF2.
- Reeeeeb000t is the ****.
- Install BF2 orignal.
- Reeb00000t.
- Install 1.03 patch.
- Reb00t.
- Install 1.12 patch.
- PLAY AND HAVE FUN.
Because when I installed the patch I just downloaded it and ran it next day and my graphic in-game got ****ed and then the screen crashed so I restarted the computer.
PS. REMEMBER TO UPDATE PUNKBUSTER!!!
