What version of 3d studio max do you guys use? I am about to get it and am not sure if it would be best to get version 8 or version 7. Version 8 looks like it has some improvements, but there seems to be more learning information available for version 7, since it has been out for a while. Are there any known problems with version 8 and BF2 renders? What would you guys suggest? Thanks!

not sure if you are going to find any resellers with 7 now that 8 has come out. maybe ebay, but autodesk isnt very keen on transferred licenses so be careful.

I looked at ebay and didn't find one available at the moment. It was mentioned that 8 has problems, would this be usable for learning to mod? I would think the tools would be updated to work with it. If I can't get version 7, what would be suggested for moddling in BF2?

Actually, since I am new to all of this and don't seem to be able to find a cheap enough copy, I may just try GMax. Has that worked for anyone? Would I be missing out on much If I learned on it first?

gmax is just like 3ds max but free, its a good thing to start with gmax first and then when your good enough go to 3ds max 8

anyways yes it is used to mod lots of games it is a very good program

good luck :)

tht and gmax is the only free 3dmodelling program (to my knowledge) that has bf2 mod tools purpose built for it... if you are new to modelling i would suggest getting gmax b4 spending hundreds of dollars on a program that will confuse beginners :)

Im using 3ds max 7 atm for unwrapping and skinning and it's great, but yeah if you could get 3ds max 8 it'd be an improvement of course.
Gmax is okay for beginners, but once you touched 3ds max you don't want to go back to Gmax, at least I didn't want to.
