how do i render with the background showing shadow?

hello all.

i like to know if some one can point me to the right direction, or enven a link to a tutorial..
im working on a model..almost done, but i wanted to know how all you guys render the model in a 3d background, sort of my model being in a space so that you can see the shadows ...

when i render, my model comes out against a pitch black background with no lighting effects...

add a plane to represent ground - add a skylight or other light source and when you render activate light tracer (in advanced lighting tab of render rollout i think its called)
