I just thought I should post this in case anyone is wondering if their CTD at startup is due to their game copy.
The CTD is this:
The game runs fine before 1.12, but after 1.12 the spalsh screen appears then goes away and you get the error message saying BF2.exe has encountered a problem, would you like to send a report?
I tried everything to fix this, 3 complete reinstalls of windows on a new HDD, multiple reinstalls of the game, including in safe mode, new admin account, new & old drivers etc and NOTHING worked.
Last weekend I built a new PC and the game runs 100% fine on it with the patch (yay, now I can play BF2:SF)
I thought it might have been something to do with my DVD copy as nothing else made sense, but this shows that is not it.
So I have 2 suggestions:
a) try getting a new DVD drive (someone pm'd me to say this fixed it for them)
b) flash update your BIOS - I think that some of the 'old' settings on my Asus A7N8X might have caused the fault.
Failing that, a complete new PC is not going to be in everyones reach
good luck
