View Full Version : Problem Crashing To Desktop

I have been playing BF2 off and on for about 3 months or so.

I recently purchased 1 gig (2x512) of Gell DDR2 mem to add to the 512 that was already in my system. After installing I noticed BF2 ran a TON smoother. A few days later I moved away to start college. I got my PC all set up and it still worked fine.

I decided I wanted to upgrade my monitor and went to best buy and purchased a 27" Westinghouse LCD Tv and a DVI cable.

Got home and started up counter strike, worked great. After a few days of getting all settled in and classes sorted out I decided I was going to play some BF2.

At first when I started the game the BF2 logo would pop up then I would get the black screen as if the game were about to load and it would crash me back to the desktop. I installed the latest graphics drivers and reinstalled the 1.12 patch. This got me as far as the login screen but I hit login and it says waiting for response then crashes me to desktop. This didn't happen the before with the old monitor but I don't see how that could be affecting my game.

I tried a few different things and nothing helped so I completely uninstalled and reinstalled. Same thing is happening

Specs are:

Proc - 3.4 P4
Vid - GeForce 6800gt
Mem - 1 gig Gell ddr2 + 512 (whatever came in the computer)

Any suggestions?

I only get CTD on certain maps... (Operation Yellow Dragon)

I don't know what you're problem is, but I would be interested to know why CTD happens at all.

Oh yeah, and it's not usually smart to mix 2 different types of RAM each with different timings. Don't ask me why, it just is.
Maybe try taking the 512 one out, and start up BF$.

Yea try that...if that doesnt work...uninstall all bf2 and then reinstall
Try patching one by one and not straight so v1.12 I did that 2nd time and it worked fine 1st time i patched straight to v1.12 it would crash when i tried to go online and click join game

Okay I'll try that when I get back from class.

Sucks I gotta drop 512 but 'eh I'd rather play!

I was getting CTD at map end, then it started to happen whenever I hit "join game". I knew it was my Vid drivers though. I am unable to install newer drivers for some reason, they just wont work. I ended up reformating my entire computer then tried 81.98 didnt work, 81.95 didnt work, finally 77.77 and that worked. Now I can play as long as I want. No more CTD. May not be the same issue as you. btw - i have mismatched RAM in my system doesnt seem to be a problem, although I would pop one out if I were you just to see.

The whole thing is, It worked completely fine for a while with the current drivers and patch and everything. It only CTD when I hooked up this tv. I don't see how that could be anything to do with it but It worked just fine with the mismatched ram before I had it.

Trying the ram fix now be back to see if it works. *prays*

Looks like the mem from NewEgg went bad. The only diff from it and the memory that came with the desktop is the former is pc4200 and the later is pc 4300. Does that matter? I tried it with just the 512 and it worked, I tried it with just the gig and it didn't work. I hope I can get my money back and buy some matching ram or just get a gig and replace the 512.

Check this too:

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\Default

Open up video.con

change:

VideoSettings.setResolution 1024x768@60Hz

to match your desktop refresh rate.... In my case it is

VideoSettings.setResolution 1024x768@85Hz
