Ive been talking to a lot of people, well some people, and we all rated Battlefield 1942 as the best game we've ever played. Now thinking about the current BF2, world war 2 mods, there are some really good ones but theres going to be none of them that goes for a conversion of the original without breaking any of the copyright issues of EA or DICE. This means that all of the content, sounds, models, textures, map and code is going to be created from the ground up. As an experienced coder, I will be taking up the whole coding process single handedly and taking up some of the initial mapping and texturing for the mod.
Now I know this topic might be a controversial one. Firstly theres the issue, why not go and play Battlefield 1942. Well the thing is, even though I rate the game as one of my favourites, I want to try and improve on it without destroying the game. DICE has given us so much more with the new engine, and I believe the game deserves to have this updating. The second reason there might be some controversy, is due to the fact that DICE/EA are quite strict on their copyright laws. However, if all the content is rebuilt from the ground up I cant see why they can kick up a fuss. Im not going to make any money from this mod, more likely to lose money, and so a mod like this should be allowed. Also Im willing to fight for this mod if controversy is found. They let a team build BF42 for the vietnam engine, and even helped them with bug testing and I believe a team that takes this on deserves the same respect.
Obviously, at first I will not be recreating the whole game. To begin with I plan to bring over one map, 2 full teams of weapons and vehicles for that map, a complete new set of textures and new sounds. I'm hoping to begin with a British vs German map to begin with, and hope to record the sounds for these characters by myself and with some friends.
To get this map off the ground however I need help, mainly in the form of modellers, skinners and animators. I can do all the coding by myself and can do some of the mapping, texturing and sound work by myself but unfortunately cant do everything by myself, so Im asking for help. If anyone is intrested in this drop me an email andrew.andrewhale@gmail.com
and I hope to hear from some of you soon.

good luck, IMO there is really more than enough ww2 mods out there... starting another one at this moment of time probably isnt the best idea. in fact, starting any mod now probably isnt smart - the original enthusiasm of recruitment in the early days of bf2 has definitely gone (just look at all the stale recuitment threads here) and to start a mod now (particularly a full conversion lol) wouldnt get it finished by the end of this year - by which stage bf2 is dead and collecting dust in a bargain bin at the supermarket whilst the modding community is distracted by the several other ww2 mods tht beat you to it - if you can code can i very seriously suggest perhaps trying to jump into one of these mods out there? if not, Armed Assault is probably going to be the next big engine to play with ;)
nice to see you want to start a mod - about a year ago it could have worked... come on! somone join this mod and prove me wrong!!!!!!!

If you have the skill, we might be interested in you at Battlegroup2. We have remade or replaced many of the original BF42 statics and we have the technology to convert BF42 maps to BF2. Pop in for a chat:

You may recall for Battlefield Vietnam we converted and released Midway, Guadalcanal, and Coral Sea:

Its great to see enthusiasm from someone just looking to bring us gamers a mod to play with, but I got to agree with jimbob on most of his points. There are a lot of mods struggling to get the manhours completed to deliver anything. Rather than struggle & then feel bad about wasted effort, why not join forces with another mod. You might not go entirely in the direction you want, but you will have assistance.

no its really not alright considering the sheer manhours (by many others not just yourself) tht could go into a project tht never sees the light of day and is being done at your own leisure (no pay). 109 registered mods are currently out there - no we do not need anymore im sorry ;) at the end of the day only about 20-30 of those 109 will make it and out of those only a few will actually be played en masse. all one has to do is look at the foray of bf1942 and bfv mods and their outcomes to see where i am coming from.....
the biggest problem these days is everyone wants to lead a mod - no one wants to help one... and normally (i am not saying it is the case in this particular case) the people who are starting the mods in these situations dont have the knowledge to do so but have done so anyway so as to be part of a mod (as they were unable to join another). if people just sat down and evaluated the prospect of what they are proposing then perhaps alot of work tht is being diverted [and wasted] now could be contributed to one of the more promising mods... i only say all this because i just left a mod in this very situation and it is now as dead as a doorknob.... if you were being paid then none of this would matter :D

This isnt the case. Im well aware of what happens with mods, Ive been working on mods for ages and this time Ive decided to do something by myself. If this mod doesnt get finished, doesnt bother me, without any help to get it off the ground it wont get there anyway but Ive already done most of the code base, but obviously using the meshes from BF2. I dont like the way you imply that I dont wat to help anyone else, Ive been doing things for other people for along time. Personally, I wouldnt want to build this mod on the Battlefield 2 engine, Id like to do it on a full engine, like the Torque Engine for example. I dont have the current knowledge to build my own engine, but Im learning on possible ways of doing it.

sorry grolshe i actually wasnt referring to yourself in particular - i know you help others, you are always a help on these forums. i was pretty much speaking in general - im sure you know what i am going on about... i wish you all the best in your future endeavours... if you were able to obtain a liscense to a full engine tht would be super neato ;)....

No offence buddy but Forgotten Hope was a amazing enhancement of original BF42, wait for version 2 of that, as its seeming along, and go for a different era but with BF42 game play if you want to retain that playability; but that does mean disabling a lot of things in BF2 hehe.
Seriously though; i think you could make a cool mod on a different era, maybe like a war just a bit later then World War 2; a minor conflict but with some machinery that was never invented in time for any battles in WW2.

I'll do what I want :) , although I have changed my planes slightly to encompass a few new things. Not giving to much away but the worlds DirectX and 100 cups of tea come to mind. And in final note, FH was not better that the original Battlefield 42 imo and the opinion is shared by other people I know. Just because your opinion differs doesnt mean I'm wrong to try. And using machinery as you put it not used in World War 2 would just be Secret Weapons or the Korean War. If you want to know why World War 2 is chosen by many game developers as a theme is because it was the last big war, which gives developers lots of scope and content.

lol noone i know thought the original bf1942 was better than FH lol... noone...
Sir dosed has a point tht i too share - unfortunately at this rate the only ww2 mods tht will get played (IMO) are FH2, BG2 and XWW2... unless you can pull of something tht is really better thn these fine examples then i forsee much frustration on your part when the download counter doesnt go up....
seriously panzaman has made an offer - go check it out....
