At work and home, whenever something goes wrong with an electronic, it's usually never happened before to anyone else. So, if you're looking for a humorous or informative experience of updating to the 1.2 patch, here it is. I created this thread because my hijacking of an XFI Xtreme Music Sound Card thread became fairly popular and a lot of people thought it was helpful and interesting. This thread will appear overtime and in pieces as I am currently doing a second reinstall which requires reboots (further explaination to come). I'll finish this story whether it works or not.

Well the Jofaba experience started at around 10pm GMT-5 last night my time. Some forum posts leaked a German version of the patch and I, of course, tried it out. I experienced a patching error, and tried from several of the sites indicated. Before finally retiring to bed and dreaming about a Super BF2, I had exhaustd all options and each failed.

When I woke up at 6am, I immediately checked for an offical launch, entirely sure that it had taken place only minutes after I had gone to sleep. Unfortunately, TBF2 and battlefield2.ea.com were both unresponsive in IE and Firefox. I blamed my internet connection and partly-new computer, and reluctantly went to work (and was almost late).

Have to reboot, more to come....

Okay no reboot happened. I didn't lie, I was just wrong. BTW I'm currently writing this with half my face fuzzy and the other half baby bum smooth, as i shave while installing. Anywhoo....

I get three breaks at work. Two fifteen minute ones and one half an hour lunch break. I spent both my 15 minutes trying to access both sites again, and the half an hour UNPAID lunch break trying to explain how Burger King coupons work to a Burger King employee. Anyway.

After seeing that the launch was official, I was psyched. Many had sucessfully patched last night, and I wasn't one of them, but surely, with my new rig, I'd be golden as soon as I got home. Right?

So I got home, downloaded the officials and unfortunately it seemed like the German patch had ruined my files. So I, in good spirits, uninstalled everything BF2 related, and reinstalled in this order:

Battlefield 2
Special Forces
Patch 1.2

But BF2 wouldn't open!!!!

So I tried installing 1.12 over 1.2 and got a CTD at the infamous 62% mark.

Me! Crashing at 62! It'd only happened once to me before and was easily fixed!

So here I am again, uninstalling and reinstalling. I did find out that I apparently only had .net 2.0 and still needed 1.1. I'm not sure if that does anything for BF2, but Iv'e since installed it before this latest 1.2 venture.

So far BF2 out of the box works. Just finished Special Forces out of the box which brings me to v1.1.

Speaking of which, I have to reboot.

Irk, I lied again. I keep thinking there's a reboot after each install. Anyway, all is good so far... game keeps starting. Which is a good sign! Now I'm going to patch from 1.1 to 1.12. The hard part comes after that. Do I do the incremental or the full? I think the incremental, and that's what I'll do. But I'll create a restore point, although it seems pointless since my last one didn't bring the game back to life.

To go from 1.1 you use full, if you already have 1.2 use incremental. But only use one, not both.

Okie, well I'm sucessfully drunk and at v1.12. Both of these are GOOD NEWS. I've created a restore point and, although it won't matter, I've prayed to the gods of Gaming. I am about to take the dark leap from 1.12 to 1.2 through the incremental. It's hard choosing whether to do the full or incremental, but the incremental will give me the bad news earlier, so it wins out.

Breath... breath.... *CLICK*

.... aaaand... the incremental patch disappeared halfway though. It just left without saying goodbye. Let's see if BF2 works now...

Good luck, I have a feeling you might need it.

NOPE!!! BF2 is destroyed yet again. For poops and giggles I'll try the full patch before trying to revert back to my restore point. I hope y'all are enjoying this =P

Yeah... that stopped halfway through too. I'll do a reboot and try again, but who want's to bet it'll do the same thing? C'mon, 2:1 odds! Who's a gambler!?

Patch keeps suddenly stopping with no error or anything. Time to revert to restore point. Please contain you're giggles until after I report that this step doesn't fix anything =P

PS: I am no longer enjoying this. Honestly.

Restore, obviously and very predicably did NOTHING. I did realize just now though that my system time is a day ahead because I set it as such in case the German patch was date sensitive after it failed for me. Could this be the problem? I guess I'll do this all again. But after that, I pretty much give the fuzzy up on Battlefield 2. And probaby this computer. I'll go on some automatic fit and sell everything, so if I can't log into a game tomorrow with the new patch, and you want a new computer cheap, keep an eye on this thread.

I used the full patch and my patch process stopped halfway through. Now no server will even let me in because of modified content. I feel your pain. I was just about to uninstall and reinstall, but I guess that's not going to work. Time to start playing Civ IV again.
