I gotta say, a lot of mods/admins are abandoning us, i havn't seen people like Defy, or Ace101, or Got3n for a while. And there are a lot of threads that need to be moved, or just closed and sent to the vault. RIght now, there's a thread in Battlefield 2 Discussion named 'patch 1.2 and future patches' or something like that, and it contatns an extremely inappropriate link. It's been up for like at least half an hour, which is a long time considering how bad it is.

Just do your duty and hit that little exclamation mark to report posts. Not many people do it, and the threads get attention as soon as an admin/mod checks their mail.

We do the best we can.

I spend extremely a lot of time for just Battlefield 2 Discussion, Special forces, and support subsections of the forum. I am usually here at least 8-10 hours everyday. I do my best, I try to not to be to harsh, but at the same time keep the TotalBF2 forums clean. But it is hard. We have over 5,000 people coming to these forums everyday.

But as SaladFork said, if you don't report the post, there is a chance that it might slip through and nobody will ever see it. We can not constantly read every single post. It's just not possible.

We have admins from all over the world, from different time zones, and we have quite a lot moderators. But we all have lives, other responsibilities, school, work, family, and this is the best we can do.

I can tell you this, I guarantee you, if you report a post, you will get a response usually, that is 90% of the time, within 10-15 minutes.

We are here, best way is the report a post, then all of us see it as soon as we check in on the forums.

That's true, but i can wait on that. WHen they wnat me to become a mod, i'll become a mod, but i'm not gonna blatently just ask 'Can i become a mod/admin, PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE?' I'm not that desperate, anyways, Badlizzard, i already reported that post that had teh inappropriate link on it twice, and it was still sitting there for like the next hour. Anyways, Sir.Side, ur a Super Mod too?

Well we can't be online 24/7. The problem is people from all over the world use this site, not just the US or UK. I am actually the only moderator from US who is online past 11:00pm until 6:00 am everyday when everyone is asleep because of my courseload. During these times, I try my best, forum page is always open right infront of me and I am always online. During the day I check the forum as much as possible, and at the weekends I am online over 12 hours per day.

I'm doing my best...but I actually like to read and enjoy the forums..and *gasp* play some Battlefield 2 from time to time! :D

But I agree, it is VERY easy to moderate when the users bring posts to our attention by using the yellow yield sign/exclamation point 'report post' button http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/images/buttons/report.gif. I check for reported posts FIRST thing when I log on to the forums.

I've been wondering, what does a moderater do? I can think up a few things like moving/closing threads but are there other things a mod can do?

I've been wondering, what does a moderater do? I can think up a few things like moving/closing threads but are there other things a mod can do?Alot more than you might first think actually. It's not only just moving and closing threads, it takes time to look through all the existing posts and locate all the malicious ones. We get many reports a day about bad posts that we have to investigate. Sometimes we have to talk to users on the forums and make sure theyre behaving, sometimes even banning people.

This is just a summary of a few things that a moderator does.

Talus
02-28-2006, 05:42 PM
A moderator sees the forums in all their ugliness...there is a LOT of mess that is cleaned up before anybody else even notices.

Moderators keep threads in their right places, ensure that dupe threads don't clog up the forums, and keep threads on-topic...all in an effort to make the forums more informative and enjoyable. If somebody wants an answer..we want them to find it easily and quickly without getting bogged down.

Moderators delete malicious threads, posts, edit out hateful material and ensure that the forums are a peaceful place. Sure, there is a little censorship, but only in the interest of keeping these forums as the best possible place to discuss Battlefield 2 without falling victim to the trappings of hatemongers and griefers.

Oh..and I try to help people with their technical problems, hardware advice, and whatever gameplay tips I can contribute.

Theres a lot a Mod does that you never see - and they are better than you. Always remember that. Always.

At the click of a finger, they can ban you, so always be nice. :)

I'm not a mod here, so I'm mostly speaking from my experiences on other forums, but I'm sure its similar.

Outside of all the forum duties discussed in the posts above, think about how contacted they are. Whenever they post, or whenever someone sees the staff page, they see that big MODERATOR (or ADMIN) title. If they want help, do you think they're going to post, or PM a staff member?

In my previous administration position, I received approximately 50 PMs a day (community wasn't too big). About 40% of them were asking questions that were already answered in guides or FAQs (Search anyone?), 30% of them were random gibberish that you couldn't decipher if you tried, 25% were actual legit questions, and the last 5% consisted of "Thank You" PMs and "I want to marry you and have your babies" (Actually happened) PMs.

And let's not get into IMs or E-mail...

Salad - I want to marry you and have your babies.

Its true however - think how many times you have contacted an admin. Now times that by 27,723.

But those are clearly true.
I can prove it, too. Let's set a="DrunkenPirate", b="God".

Let's start with the following (c being an unknown at this time):
a - b = c.

Square both sides:
a² − 2ab + b² = c²

Since a - b = c, let's substitute for c:
a² − 2ab + b² = c(a - b)

Let's distribute on the right side:
a² − 2ab + b² = ac - bc

Let's re-arrange it a bit (subtract ac and subtract b² from both sides, add ab to both sides):
a² − ab − ac = ab − b² − bc

Factorize both sides (take out a from the left, b from the right):
a(a - b - c) = b(a - b - c)

Cancel out the common factor (divide by a - b - c):
a = b

Therefore....
DrunkenPirate = God

(Yes, I color coded all that by hand. Mods, feel free to hit edit/quote to see what I went through)
