Depending on what graphics driver you are using?
If its an nvidia then just goto control panel/add/remove programmes and uninstall it from there.
if its an ati then goto the ati site and download the ati removal tool which will remove all old ati drivers from your pc before putting the new one on.
Also i usually disable my virus checking software before installing graphics drivers! hope this can help?

hi, how do i know if all my drivers are up-to-date. i go on device manager and click check for updates on my radeon 9800 card and it always says i have the recent drivers, but i never see it downloading the drivers. is there a program to download which is free that i can run and it will scan through my pc and see if i have all the drivers up-to-date?

Step1: Goto your control panel and uninstall the ATI drivers and ATI Control Panel or CCC, if your using modified Drivers, then uninstall those as well.
Step2: Download Driver Cleaner
Step3: Reboot into safe mode, (hint: press f8 right before windows starts loading, hit it multiple times and choose "Safe Mode when it shows)
Step4: If u have modified drivers that include its OWN driver cleaner, use that FIRST, THEN use driver cleaner and clean all the drivers u don't need.
Step5: Use CAB Cleaner (in driver cleaner menu) only if you are going to covert back to the Catalyst drivers. Otherwise just clean the ATI and ATI CCC.
Step6: Remove files from recycle bin if their are any
Step7: Restart into windows. Once you have rebooted it your OS will tell you have new hard ware and will ask you to look for drivers. If you are going to install the Catalyst Drivers just cancel through. Otherwise just choose to search for the driver just this once and click the box in the bottom.
Step8: Download and install drivers andReboot.

This is a good format for any video card.
However I would add this.
R.1) download the newest drivers you are planing on using first but dont install yet.(this way you dont have to fumble and bumble through limited res and blocked text.)
1) uninstall drivers and ATI Control Panel from Add/Remove Control Panel in Windows.
2) Reboot and boot into Safe Mode, F8 just before Windows boot.
3) Click cancel to any plug&play hardware wizards that informs you of new hardware.
4) Use http://drivercleaner.net and remove relevant ATI files.
5) Reboot and start Windows normally, again cancel to any plug&play hardware wizards that informs you of new hardware.
6) Install drivers of choice, with its installer. Reboot.
