Os: Windows xp home, sp 2
CPU: Athlon 64 3500 ~2.5 ghz
Motherboard: ASUS A8N SLI, Phoenix Bios v6.oopg
Memory: 2gb (2 x 1gb)
Video: BFG Gforece 7800 GTX
Sound: SB Audigy Audio
I updated all the drivers about 2 months ago.
For the Video card I tried running BF 2 on the most current drivers 88 somthing, and also the drivers that are on the install disk for bf2.
When I try to start BF2 if flashes to a black screen and then crashes to the desktop. Some refresh rates pop up on my monitor. When the screen goes black it sets a refresh rate of something like 54/ 85khz.
Before I installed any of the patches BF2 ran on the computer, I played some single player maps with no problem. After patching to 1.22 it wont start. I uninstalled and renistalled BF2 and the patch and it still wont start.
I also went to video.con and the set resolution setting is at 800x600@60khz which should be fine for my system.
Thanks for your help!

Try removing the BF2 folder from My Documents, don't worry it'll come back after running the game. I had the same problem and the game started right up after I deleted that folder. I had to set all my controls and sound/video settings again...but at least it worked. Remember to backup any screenshots you want to keep aswell.

^ What he said. Deleting the BF2 info from the My Documents folder will force it to reset all video settings. That should fix your problem.

thanks for the advice, unfortunately I have the same result, it crashes after a black screen. It flashes up 54/85 khz on my monitor, which is a refresh rate my card can't handle...

Try reinstalling BF2 but don't patch it. If it runs, you might have a bad copy of the patch. If that works, download a new FULL version of 1.22 and try that.

I was able to start the game after reinstalling. I downloaded the patch again from EA. The first time I ran the patch it failed like 2/3 of the way into it. I ran the patch again and it completed. The same failure happened again though. Blackscreen then crash. I tried unistalling and reinstalling again, except now I have been getting an MD5 Error during the reinstall. Oddly, every time I reinstall the install process gets an error at different moments. Sometimes it was with common_client.zip, sometimes the error doesn't come untill the end of the third disk menu_loggedin.bik... I just want my money back, BF2 is fun, but this is a real hassle.

Go here: C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Settings
And edit: VideoDefault.con
Change: renderer.allowAllRefreshRates to 1 or 0 depending on what it was at already.

Yep. Very same problem (for more than a month now).
And euroforce will not be installed - it says that it needs 1.2 patch to be installed.
But I have 1.22. I have downloaded 1.21 twice and tried. No works.
On the other hand, I can tell you, life is much nicer without bf2 (and it's spring now).

Its rather strange. Even with a fresh install of BF2 w/o any patches, it STILL doesn't load up. I can patch up to the latest version just fine but BF2 won't load up.

Sounds like you djsly have a pc problem since none of the bf2 thingies work.
But I have just started and played in an unpatched bf2 with no problems.
Wonder if there is a difference between the 1.22 patches (the one from the ea downloader and the others you can find of the net) ... ?

I would figure that I installed a program that conflicted w/ BF2. Other then BF2, everything else works flawlessly.
I'll just pray that v1.3 or a miracle will fix it. :P

I don't recall ever having a game that won't startup. Shame on Ea and DICE.
Then again, it has been working fine for forever until this recent situation...:cry:

I reinstalled the game and worked perfectly without the patch.
In fact it seemed to run better than with any bf2 patch.
I redownloaded the 1.22 patch from a different source (Ausgamer) and it still doesnt work.
Anybody have any ideas at all what might be causing this? It is really lame :( Game is no fun playing with bots...

Man I have the exact same problem, BF2 has been working mint on my rig for 8 odd months, now the damn thing won't load a map past 50%, even on single player. I even have issues applying changes to video settings and sound settings.
I have reinstalled windows AND reinstalled BF2, with no joy. This is ****ing me off to no end.
Have they changed something server side recently?

Damn, the new patch didn't fix my CTD! NooOooOo!!!:cry:
UPDATE: I got it to work in window mode! I had to change the video.con file resolution to match my desktop resolution and monitor refresh rate!
For some reason I'm getting transparent grounds!!! Everything looks like they're floating. Odd, buildings and its concrete near them do show up fine..
.....I changed the resolution to 1280x964 and the transparent grounds is gone. Any resolution higher then that causes the ground anomaly.
