Ok so I have had to reinstall BF2 from scratch i.e. disk and now cannot work out which patch I have to use? Can i just install the latest one? Current version I have is as per the disk i bought 1.0.2442.0

Install the latest "full" patch, the multi hundred megabyte version.

Grab the 1.22 FULL. I haven't had time to install 1.22 yet but there should be one that says 1.22 full. It'll have the biggest file size. If EA/DICE was lazy I think 1.21 had a full install then you'd just have to download 1.22.
