View Full Version : 7900GTX 512mb - Can't run BF2 - HELP!!

You won't believe me when I say this but...

I just installed the new eVGA 7900GTX 512mb, and I can't get BF2 to run on ANY SETTING! Let me lay out all the details...

My setup:
Dual 3.6 Xeon Processors
3GB RAM
Two 250GB 7,500rpm Hard Drives
eVGA 7900GTX 512mb
Dell 21" Widescreen (1680x1050)

My Test in BF2:
I got my new 7900GTX installed in my computer, fired everything up, updated the drivers with the latest update, defragged my computer, ran spyware on my PC to ensure it's as clean as it can ever be, as well as removed all old drivers of my previous graphics card...

Fired up BF2, went into the settings and ramped everything up in the settings to HIGH with 4xAA, and set the resolution to 1280x1024.... Went into a single player online game to test the graphics that I was beyond excited to see....and it was so choppy I couldn't even get my weapon selection / spawn map pulled up!!

So...I went back to the menu...lowered the resolution to 1024x768 with MEDIUM SETTINGS and NO AA... Went into a single player online game, and GOT THE SAME RESULTS!

So...I then uninstalled BF2 Completely from my system, did yet another defrag, reinstalled it and applied the latest update...ran it again....and got the SAME RESULTS.

Something is seriously screwed up here and I have no clue what it is. I've checked everything and all is clear.... am I missing something!??!? This is starting to freak me out, being as I just dropped all this money on this new card and I can't even RUN BF2! Sucks big time

Hope someone can save my day. I can't go to bed until this is fixed.... and it's 2:00am

Have you checked the audio settings? Might be on hardware and that screws up FPS.

can u play other games ok?

Have you checked the audio settings? Might be on hardware and that screws up FPS.

If u have 3rd party sound card ie Sound Blaster in a PCI slot, then u will use hardware.

If ur using onboard sound u use Software.

Which drivers did you install as not all the newest drivers support your card.

Did you uninstall the old drivers properly in safe mode using driver cleaner pro?

Is your power supply good enough for your graphics card (you should be using 500 watt +)

Bet that card cost you a fortune - shame as it will be obsolete in 6 months when Direct x10 comes out

Good review here though http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/325/1/

Well I have a 7900GTX and it installed fine and fired BF2 up first go and no problems since. At 1600 x 1200 with 4 x aa and 8 x af I get around 70 - 90 fps (depending on the map).

Have you changed anything in the BIOS?

Checked your Nvidia settings to make sure you dont have too much AA?

Whats the motherboard? When you updated the drivers did you uninstall them or just re-install over the top?

Do other modern games work? Also do you have your chipset drivers installed?

My computer is a Dell Precision 670.... so that's all I know for the motherboard..

My power supply is 650watts...

My sound card is a SoundBlaster Xfi Extreme Music...

I uninstalled the old NVIDIA Drivers for my previous Quadro FX 3400 by just going to My Computer > Add Remove Programs > Uninstall NVIDIA Drivers, and once those were uninstalled I rebooted in safe mode and ran Drive Clean Pro…. Then rebooted again to install my new 9700GTX drivers, and fired up BF2 to test….Still getting the same problem

I've never changed anything in the BIOS....

I don't know how disable dual CPU Support, so I can't even test that (unless someone can help explain how)....

I've checked my NVIDIA Settings and my ForceWare Version is 84.56....

My AA Settings on my card are set to "Application Controlled"....

I don't know what or where to look for my hardware audio settings, and what to change to help the FPS in the game. When I go to the audio settings in BF2, it "was" set to "Software" and then I switched it to read from "Hardware" and the results were still the same... Then I set it to read "Creative Xfi" but it said that my hardware doesn't support that, which is strange because that's what kind of card I have!....

I don't have any other games on my computer other than BF2....

I don't know how to tell if I have my chipset drivers installed....

---------------------

With all that being said, could someone maybe help me in listing out steps on what I can try next? A few things were shot out, but I don't know how to attempt doing them, or what I should try in which order. One person from another forum said that once BF2 is running, CTRL+ALT+DEL and go to my processes and only have BF2 run from one 3.6Xeon instead of both…. But I did that and there isn’t an option for me to disable one of my processors.

I believe the patch(1.22) is the cause. I believe the fps problem will be fixed in 1.3

That sucks bad.... becuase I can't even get into a game. Anyone know if there is some news on when 1.3 will come out?

You have to go to the process, then right click and select "Affinity". Then remove one of the checks.

I did that, and tried BF2 on each processor (enabled 0, tried it.... didn't work, so I then disabled 0 and enabled 1, tried it.... didn't work, so then I went into the BIOS and disabled one all together, tried it... didn't work)

I'm downloading 3DMark right now to run a test to see if my card works fine on there. It's 334mb out of 576mb on downloading.... as soon as it's done and I run the test, I will post the results here. Hopefully it'll tell me if it's something with BF2 or somethign with my Card.

Stay tuned....

Ok, I just ran 3dMark06 and it went through the 1st graphics test just fine, but while it was starting up the 2nd graphics test I got this error...

sound like a lot of people are having problems with this and other games with very high end system. thank god mine is a P.O.S, make sure you have latest updates and drivers. sounds like something does not quite support your graphics card. google the error message and see what others have found.

I'll try to research it tonight. Going to take my computer to a tech that is very "in the know" with high end gaming PC's.... so hopefully i'll be all fixed up by tomorrow evening

I just got a new system (2 weeks ago). Mine is AMD x2 (dual core) and same kind of card than you (ASUS 7900GTX). I also had a very similar problem. I had to insatll the AMD patch for dual core CPU (released in June 2005) and everything was fine after that.

Intel has probably an equivalent patch for their dual core CPUs.

Other possibility, if your eVGA 7900GTX 512mb is overclock, that could be the problem too. See those thread for more info:

http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=235

http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=417375

If this doesn't help for your problem, search the NET for specific problem for your card (eVGA 7900GTX 512mb).

Many problem have been reported for 7900GTX overclocked cards.

Thank you for your help. i will read those posts right now. As for my CPU.... it's actually a "Dual Processor" and not "DualCore". And another thing I did was enable and disable one of my processors to see if it would work on just a single processor and it did not :(

Where can I set the clock speed? I don't see it on any of the menus. I thought there was something I need to add to my registry to be able to set the clock speed on the card, but I can't find it anywhere. Can anyone be of help ?

Sir. MatDef

It's called coolbits, you can find it here:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815

If you got the evga superclocked, it could be toasted. Try dropping down the clockspeed and see what happens.

chrisluck
04-30-2006, 04:58 AM
Nevermind... just found it.... set the card to the factory defaults and still no luck... I'm reading bits that people are saying there could be a conflict with my xFI Soundblaster card..... however, they are not explaining what they do to correct the conflict. Anyone have suggestions?

Installed it and lowered the clockspeed to the nvidia suggested default before it was ever overclocked (650/800 is what it's at now) and no luck...

Any suggsetions on the xfi soundcard problem?

Don't feel too bad, I'm still trying to get a happy SLi relationship going on with BF2 =P

Here are my stats (basically all new within past 2-3 weeks):

AMD Athlon 3200+ Venice with IHS removed ~ stock is 2.0ghz overclocked to 2.8ghz 1.67v
DFI Lanparty UT SLi-D Expert
2X 7900GT CO Superclocks in SLi stock of 550/1580
2X 1GB OCZ Platinum DDR400 3-3-2-5 at 230mhz 2T (Haven't finished lowering timings or even tried going 1T yet)
74gb 10,000rpm Raptor
300 7,200rpm Seagate 16mb
XFI Xtreme Music Soundcard
NEC DVD-RW
Rosewill DVD-RW
580w Modular Hiper Type-R

Watercooling consists of a double dual pass heatercore w/ 2X 120mm fans at 79cfm, Swiftech MCP655 pump, and Swiftech Storm cpu block.

And still having problems =P

Do you know what type of checks I can do with my xfi soundcard to see if that is the problem / conflict or not ?

Take it out. Honestly, thats the way to do it. And change your audio settings to software, though it'll do that automatically anyway.

I'll do that now just to see.

GUESS WHAT EVERYONE!!!!

I just removed my Soundblaster XFi Extreme Music card from my computer all together, and everything works just fine!!! This is a dream!!! Everything looks so damn amazing too.

Now I just have to figure out how I can get my soundblaster card back in so I can play some BF2 with some decent sound. Anyone able to help out from here?

check the dell support forums, If I am not mistaken there are many issues involving 3rd party gpu's and dell pre-configured systems....atleast xfx has a good warranty policy, I have an xfx 7900 gt which runs bf2 like nothing, if ur gtx doesnt work soon RMA that biatch....

sorry, late reply
your sound card was sharing the same IRQ. if you can set it in your bios thats easy. if not, then you'll have to try installing one first, then the other. since your soundcard is out, your luck should be with this install. it can share without any errors. go to control panel/system/hardware/device manager/view-resources by type/Interrupt request (IRQ) to check it windows. on some IRQ share problems with video cards in low settings it will only cause VOIP problems for the sound card. good luck

i saw this somewhere else, maybe jofaba posted it, but try removing one of your gigs of ram so you now only have 2 gigs, i heard bf2 doesn't run well with that much ram, it may not be optimized for dual channel if you have 3 gigs
