As stated earlier this week, the team behind the Rise of Kobol (http://www.bsgmod.com/) mod have released their first public beta. This version adds a couple new aspects to gameplay that are very unique. Take a look:

After more than a year a very early & raw build is finally here, we are releasing at this point to involve you, the BF2 community in the growth and direction of this mod. Our main goal was to bring true as possible Zero G combat on the BF2 engine and we feel we did this and it's ready for you to learn and help us make better. We also added an FTL system. This is experimental and your feed back will be crucial to shape it as a very effective and intricate part of what makes RoK special. This mod is very young and will grow with your support and feedback.

Also, we want to thank the Lords of Clan Tribe and Rara Avises for their support. With out them things would have been much harder. I'll stop now and say enjoy and we look forward to your support.

First few rounds are hard, no matter what your control scheme. Stick with it and it becomes great fun. Can't wait to try using my joystick on this baby.

NOTE: Make sure you read the readme when you install!

Known Client Bugs & Fixes Here

I crash to desktop after I load the map and hit join.
RoK has to be set at medium or higher video setting, change that and you'll be good to go.

How do you set your up-down-left-right control. I used the read me but it didn't seem to change anything (Note: this is not required to play it just adds more control).
This was left out of the read me, sorry about that. Once you finished the read me make sure to make the controls.con file Read Only. To do this right click on the file, go to properties and the check the Read Only box. Hit Apply then ok and you're all set.

When I leave a server after playing RoK and join back to it or another server running RoK I CTD.
For some reason this happens and we are working on a fix. For now just quit BF2/RoK to rejoin or join a new server.

My installer says Alpha .6, is this the right installer?

My server runs for a bit then crashes?
Right now their is a bug that crashes the server after reloading the map. Set your rounds for the map to at least a 100, this won't effect you server.

Can Operation Tylium Mine handel 64 player.
Not yet, currently it only spawns 40 vehicles total. We will support 64 players in our up coming patch.

Yes, there is a learning curve. This is a brand new style of multi-player combat. Don't give up, it's worth it just like learning to fly the choppers in the good old DC days.

As a big time scifi geek, this is one of the mods I have been waiting for. ROK Dev team you did a ****ing outstanding job.

when i tried 2 download RoK windows didn't recoginze the file so i couldn't double click it, so i tried to just put it in my mods directory but the mod still isn't installed what do i have 2 do 2 get it installed?

Well after a few rounds of either side... I find the Vipers way out classed by the Cylon craft..

Devs if you want players to frequent your mod and get used to it.. dont enter a server and OWN the newbs .. Kenobi this is for you mostly..

I as a dev for Galactic Conquest entered into servers and tried to familiarize the players with its scheme and help them out learning the new concepts and the way flight worked etc.. Just dont fly around constantly killing with missle lock.

Im dissed enough already to not want to play it. Just from that experience alone.

The Vipers engine blast LOD's are off.. adjust them so they arent seen a mile away and the enemy can fly right to them un anounced..

The cylon craft is very hard to see against a black background so your at disadvantage right off if your in a Viper.

Is there a laser fire effect with sound on the way? If not I suggest implementing it.. the rapid gunfire using BF2 sounds is strange.

The controls are easy to learn.. however I find it difficult to keep the viper from not spinning too much while dogfighting

The Cylon craft control is already good.. not much room for improvement there.

Not entirely understanding the Jump thing .. but in time Im sure it will make sense.

The one test map is cool in atmosphere and looks. However the map terrain in take off areas should be lowered some.. as its diffcult with take off at first to not damage your craft since the only way up is forward by first pointing the craft upwards.. but just doing so damages your craft as the rear end touches the ground. If you practice enough the craft glides pretty good.. and the thrusters work well... but the terrain hills as I said near take off is a wall of death.

Not too much else to say other than its got promise.. implement some good effects for fire and replace engine sounds.. then the craft will seem more realistic and not BF2ish.

Its a new mod and will improve Im sure with time. Most space fans will love it. But again for petes sake Devs, help out the community a little and dont kick thier A** in your server.. you would think the Dev server is a place to go for passing that learning curve not get owned.

I know its fun finally playing with the public.. you should be using this time to Watch very closely at your players comments in game and take them all to heart.. dont ignore even the smallest.. it may kill your mod in the long run if the publics thoughts of the mod arent good.

Its a good mod though.. I was waiting to try it.. I will play it more, and with time I will be more comfortable with the gameplay.

I hope you plan on large capital ships with bays for ships to take off and land in along with objective type maps with lots of space battle.;)

Ok first off I’m not here to trash but to just comment on what you have said.

-The owning up on nuggets -

I couldn't help my self but I do answer any questions people have about how to fly or what is coming up next for the mod. So when I take off rounds to answer people’s questions I like to have some fun myself. Also, with the missile lock I say if you have missiles use them. They are there to pack a punch real fast and then you finish the enemy off with bullets.


-The viper and raider unbalanced-

Raider Pros - Heavy hitting bullets and missiles
Black and thus stealthy
Engines do not show far away

Raider Cons - Slower maneuverability than Viper


Viper Pros - Smaller target
Bullets seem easier to hit with (IMO)
Can be used at any distance effectively

Viper Cons - Engine flames seen from a distance
Bullets and missiles do less damage

Both seem pretty balanced to me


-Laser Sound effect-

There are no lasers in the show battle star galactica sorry but the bullets sounds may change if more people complain about it.

-Large capital shops-

Expect to see them and you will love them


-Replacing effects-

You must remember this is a beta version .05. It was put out to see how the community would take to the mod. Why do a bunch of work and have the community hate the mod?

-Difficulty taking off-

If you read the readme in the installer it should answer your problems. It talks about your vector thrusts I will go into that now...

By default they are set as weapons 5 6 7 8.
8 being hover up
7 being hover down
6 being hover left
5 being hover right

You can adjust these in game to any key you want. Then you go into your controls.con file and do some editing so that you don't have them set to pulse but full auto. All of this I’m positive was included in the readme

Hope this covered any problems and if i sounded harsh in anyway through this I didn't mean to.

I spent quite a bit of time on the RoK dev server today. Initially getting owned by the devs was not fun but the experience turned out to be everything that I hoped after I got through the learning curve. I was very impressed with the balance between the two ships. Neither side felt disadvantaged although it is very tough to see Raiders against the dark sky. When I was in a Raider I took advantage of this and attacked from above whenever possible. This is a kickass first release!

RoK Dev Team: Any chance of GPLing the sourcecode in case you guys get Foxed? It would really be a shame to see this mod buried due to legal trouble. BTW while we are waiting for custom maps it might be cool to see vipers/raiders replace the aircraft on the stock EA maps. Anachronistic but an easy way to put more maps in rotation.

AbblePC: Lasers? Really? Man apparently you never saw a single episode of the new series. The mod's gun sounds are pretty close. Do yourself a favor and watch the new series. Good drama and it has some of the best cgi space combat since Space: Above and Beyond.

1. I personally thought this mod was based on the original BSG not some new fab tv movie or show.

I remember things like silver Cylons with one red eye.. Vipers shooting lasers.. maybe Im wrong.. never even thought of them as high speed machine guns.. which makes no sense in space as a moving projectile.. nor do missles with streamers.

2. Again listen to comments and thats it.. dont try to answer to everything and take it personally.. they were only comments on what I personally thought would help.. for my enjoyment. If you dont have people liking what they use in game.. no one will play it. Many times we had to take into consideration what joe public has to say and use that instead of what we were just used to or was the easiest thing to implement. ITs a tough thing to balance.. between what we as players want and what you as the Devs want.. its your mod.. but again.. you will be playing it by yourself if you only look at it your way.

3. So the Viper thrust your saying is meant to be seen way before any actual ship mesh? It looks to me still like its just an LOD adjustment. But if it was meant to be on purpsoe so be it.. I wont ever want to be in the Viper again over the Raider. I stick out like a sore thumb when viewing it from afar.
This may depend on the graphic details the person is using too.. I persoanlly have mine set on Ultra High.. if that helps at all.. yes the file was modified the game wont allow that selection.. but I havent really seen any thing different than the actual game Highest settings yet. For balance purposes I would match the LOD on the effect for both Viper and Raider.. just my two cents.. maybe you want them to be seen from far off whereas the Raider is stealth and you cant see them until you see the actual ship.

Why I feel that is unbalanced is that the Raider seeing the Viper first has more oppurtunity to own.. since it can begin firing upon the Viper first.. and more so that the Raider guns are more powerful that the Vipers.. if the Vipers missles were more acurate than the Raiders .. then that would balance.. again only my two cents.

4. I did read the manual and I do not want to Have to edit my config settings for controls just to fly these.. they seemed to fly just fine using the BF2 default keys. Also something I learned coding.. Code Everything first for STOCK bf2.. as thats what the average player uses.. then if needed more than the original button scheme on any one vehicle then code in a different set. Actually why did they get coded for anything but WASD? The player can then change them to fit thier keyboard control settings across the board.. not the other way around.


5. I also undertand fully its a beta. Thats how I was looking at the mod.. as a beta not a Fully tested final release. even then look at EA there is always room for improvement.

6. I would post this in your forums.. I just register for forum boards I will frequent.. and Ive just begun playing the mod.

7. Like I said its got good potential.. if you dont want these kinds of comments I will keep to myself and just report what I see to others instead. lol which I will do anyway.. Just thought you would want to see them here first.

I will be playing the mod more and hopefully have some better comments than just my first impressions.. Its a good start on a mod and it looks like it will be fun with enough players.

Again I was misunderstanding this was based on the Origninal Battlestar Galactica with Pegasus, Vipers, Cylons etc..

only beta .05 and its already this amazing

i love the zeroG and the engine sounds for both craft

but texture seems to lack detail and both viper/raider gun sound is not accurate to the movie/tv series, sounds like blackhawk minigun... hopefully next beta will include more of this baltarstar goodness

AbblePC: Watch the new series. You have too. Give it 5 episodes, and you'll be hooked. It's an amazing show, that i love. I'm no sci-fi fan, i used to watch a bit of Star Trek but because of BSG, i simply can't watch Star Trek anymore... it's so... 90's. :D

Only a few suggestions as of yet.

Increase draw distance on vehicles. An enemy ship will be locked on to where you cant even technically see it the ship yet, just the engine fire or whatever its called.

Increase the view distance. Its an immersion killer to not be able to see passed 100m or whatever...in space..... This would be not much of a killer to the FPS or anything I wouldn't think seeing as there isn't a ton of objects to draw in a space map.

Anyway, it was great fun. Got some awsome squad play in. Had a squad of aobut 5 guys using Squad FTL when we attacked outposts. It was so succesful because nothing was up against our 5 ships just appearing there. No warning, you couldn't see us coming. This happened to me a few times while I wasn't in a squad. I would decide to defend an outpost...and all the sudden...boom...like 4 or 5 enemy ships appear out of no where and slaughter me. Hehe, great fun. :D

All space map. We will release this in a patch soon after 1.3 testing and compatibility. Check our forums. Or testers are putting together a night soon to film and major battle for our menu background using battlerecorder.

solodude23, I love the feed back on FTL squad use. I really racked my brain thinking of how to use this and what would work best. I'm glad people are getting used to it and becoming more of squads than in BF2.

We are fixing the LODS, but it shouln't lock on before you see it. I'll check on this.

I don't know about the lock on before you see it, but it practically seems like it at times. Just the fact that you see the engine fire or w/e and not the ship.

Besides that, I highly reccomend the Brickfield Mod launcher, at least if you are planning to get other mods.
