Well I saw a lot of people asking and this will just end all the question topics. Its very simple however most people don't know how to do it. The only downside to this is it will cut off a little bit off the top and bottom. However its so little you can't even tell and doesn't remove any of your GUI.
So this is what you need to do:
Right click on your Battlefield 2 icon on the desktop, click on properties on the part where it says target, add +szx 1920 +szy 1200 (Or whatever your resolution is). So it looks like this ...
"C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1200
NOTE: Some may also need to do this however only do this if the first fails. In most cases this can be ignored but I have seen some that need this.
Navigate to: "My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\Default\Video.con"
Find line: VideoSettings.setResolution 1600x1200@75Hz (Or whatever your resolution is at)
You can either change this line to something like 800x600@60Hz, or just stick "rem " in front of the whole mess so that it is ignored by BF2. (You'll be overriding it with shortcut parameters anyway)
Here are some screenshots for you all

4x3 stretched ... it's all soft and squashed ...

1920x1200 ... looks great BUT the top and bottom are cut off a bit!

I will be adding some screenshots. Enjoy, and if you have any problems you can always just revert back your changes. If you're really nervous make a backup file of your Video.com.

Looks good, but there is still no true widescreen support. see how your mini-map is oval shaped, it should be a circle. you have some distortion there.

Is it possible to force a 4x3 monitor to run in a widescreen res? Just like TVs do when watching 16:9 movies?

You can force just about anything to do anything you want :) but the outcome isn't always great. In answering your question yes you can however I don't know the quality of it since I never tried it but I know friends who have.

Helo I have a question , to help my dear friend..
He always had problems trying and trying and reinstalling bf2, the first of the problems was the patching process "patch failed" soo then he did registry and got successfull and it let him fully patch, then the goes into bf2 on the desktop and it says somthing about unmodified and some weird writing, after he figured out that he could only get into bf2 through xfire, later he goes into a game and it says unmodifed content (every gets it). Then he restarted his pc and went back into bf2 though the shorcut (weird). He goes to join my room and ends up being in there for 5 seconds, he get kick from Punkbuster, it says Global Guid Ban and he wasent involved in any cheating.... hes too much of a noob to do that ... can somebody help him please.. he and i would really apperciate it

And my Video.con file is set to 800x600@60hz. I tried remarking it out as well, but I got the same result. Am I missing something simple here?

if your getting dumped to your desktop it's a graphics issue..

Hello all.
I registered to this forums specifically in the hope that someone can help me run BF2 at 1440x900 resolution.
I have tried pretty much everything in this thread, but whenever i try to run BF2 using the modded shortcut i get nothing more than a black screen. I open task manager to get back to the desktop and it doesnt show BF2 as running.
This is whats in the shortcut:
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900
This is my profile's video.con:
VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 3
VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 3
VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 2
VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 3
VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off
VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 1
VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 3
This is my default video.con:
VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 3
VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 3
VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 2
VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 3
VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off
VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 1
VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 3
I have also tried setting the resolution in both video.con to 1440x900@60Hz as well as one at a time, with and without the shortcut mod.
My video card is ATI x800Pro, my monitor is Hanns-G JW199D 19" 1440x900 Res.
Any suggestions at this point would be greatly appreciated.

ok, I updated my drivers and deleted the bf2 folder in my documents. I can get into the game now and it seems to work, though i have one question: when i go into video settings in options is it supposed to say 800x600@60 even if I modded the shortcut to 1440x900? will it affect the resolution if i change the quality settings?
Thanks alot for the suggestions. I just got this monitor the other day and i should have figured i would need to update my drivers. thanks again.
caseman
08-18-2006, 06:20 PM
yeah, it should say 800x600. your bypassing all of that anyways with the shortcut line.
Leave it at 800x600 and change all the quality settings you want.
Talus
08-18-2006, 10:12 PM
No problem, and yes...it says 800x600 for all of us.
Just another reminder that the BF series does not have true widescreen support.

Hey thx for the fix to get BF2 running at my native res of 1680x1050. I'm sure its woking at the res now, however it still looks soft to me. I have included some screen shots that i hope explain what i mean. Interface menus look nice but the game seems soft and not as clean and crisp as i was hoping. The screen working in Windows looks amazing. Colours are vivid and images/text are clean and sharp. Any ideas?
LCD is Belina 20.1" 10 20 35w connected over DVI
ATi X850 XT 256mb. XP Proffesional SP2. Latest ATI drivers
All video settings are on high except dynamic lighting and shadows which are on mid. AA is x2
Just had a thought that i haven't seen the "optimzing textures" window come up when i changed the resolution to 1680x1050? Shouldn't that have happened for each map once the res was changed??
here are screen shots
http://img245.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screen100zs1.png
http://img206.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screen099ql7.png
http://img215.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screen095mr6.png
oh final question. How can you get BF2 to use the native res if starting up using Xfire. I very often use it to join a m8 who is already playing.
Thx
Talus
08-22-2006, 02:14 AM
I believe optimization only happens after you change your graphics options (excluding resolution).
It doesn't need to optimize for every map..just once is fine until you change settings again.

OK, I'm not sure if I'm completely missing something or what's going on. I have been using the edited shortcut for BF2 and the Special Forces expansion pack and they have been working great, letting me run in 1680 x 1050. My problem is that I can only launch the EU and now the Armored Fury apps from the EA downloader, and can therefore not edit the shortcut. If I try to launch a map belonging to either of these booster packs from within regular BF2, I am told that I first need to purchase and download the booster pack. AAARRRGGGHHH!!
Is there a way to create desktop shortcuts to these 2 booster packs that I can then edit or can anyone recommend a different way to accomplish my mission here?
Thanks much.

I still have the "VIDEO.CON" after installing 1.4.....BUT that is NOT why I am writing here; I NEED HELP from Talus et al.
I got my Widescreen LCD yesterday and today following instructions here as best as I can I have been trying to get my BF2 running again - w/o luck so far. First I tried the initial tip, add your new resolutions to the Shortcut address thing....after that when I tried openng BF2, the 1st BF2 Screen would come up and then it would CTD............then I found where Talus said to change the Resolution setup in that
"Video.Con" file to 800x600, after that I thought I had a GO, it went as far as "connecting to Server" and then would/will CTD.
Can someone PLEASE tell me what to do w/o having to re-install everything.
THANKS, Michael:confused:
Talus
09-09-2006, 11:19 PM
First of all, delete your Video.con file under your My Documents\Battlefield 2 profile or if THAT doesn't work, delete the entire My Documents\Battlefield 2 directory.
You'll lose all of your settings..but that's the whole point. There is a setting somewhere still on your machine that is disagreeing with your new LCD.
C-Hawk
09-10-2006, 12:01 AM
Talus: TKS, first I tried the Delete VIDEO.CON - - - did not work; thus, I Deleted the whole darn BF2 Folder..........and WALA. I'm back in the Battle.
It is running FULL Screen (not top and bottom clipped off) and I edited the Shortcut to 1680x1050............BUT...........in the Game NOW under Video it shows me running at 800x600 at 60Hz (which from what I gather in this thread is to be ignored - I am actually running at the Higher res's - RIGHT?) It has to be stretched (wide) because I notice my Radar Screen (upper right) is ovaled (new word).
TKS PFC C-Hawk:confused: still confused though
Talus
09-10-2006, 12:54 AM
Yup...sounds like it's running as it should.
Your widescreen is filled and the viewport is in the proper perspective. Some HUD elements will appear stretched (e.g. mini-map).

Actually your running at 800x600 stretched to fit 1680x1050, with the gun model corrected for the stretch and a stretched HUD. The way I figure on this is change the res and then play the game, two things will stand out at the different resolutions; one, press the "~" key, the text will be distorted and unreadable depenting on which res your on; two, the size of the flags that tell you how fare your away from a base on screen will be different sizes (the lower the res the bigger they are. Try it out yourself.

how do you get gamespy not to revert me back to 800x600res. does everyone who plays bf2 in widescreen do it in single player?read 2 posts up:eek:

gamespy was launching the game from the exe. bypassing my hack. used gamespys command line promt which adds the hack when launching the game. so far it's working. i'm still sort of getting used to a lcd. the widescreen is nice ,but image quality is better on crt i think. mabe i don't have everything tweaked right.

It takes time to get used to LCD...but you'll never go back to CRT (unless you get a huge excellent quality CRT ;))

if it hasn't already been mentioned, it seems this is a way to get BF2 to allow you to run it at higher res's then it allowed in the video settings menu. in my case, i have a 1280x1024 native resolution Dell LCD, but before i did this trick, bf2 would only allow me to run at 1152x864, even though it seems now that my hardware is quite capable of playing at 1280x1024.

You can either change this line to something like 800x600@60Hz, or just stick "rem " in front of the whole mess so that it is ignored by BF2.
I'm sorry, can someone explain how to do this? Do you mean:
VideoSettings.setResolution rem 800x600@60Hz
Or
rem VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz
Or other?
It seems everyone is having trouble with 1440x900 resolution widescreen (which is what I am trying to get working).
Well nothings working, and I have read extensively through the widescreen gaming forums as well as this entire thread.
At this point, I would advise all those who intend to play on a screen with a native resolution of 1440x900 not to expect BF2 to support it. I can play the game, its just a little stretched thats all. But as for having BF2 running in widescreen, I will just have to keep an eye on the progress of the FOV changing hack and their work to be accepted by Punkbuster.

Using:
"D:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +modPath mods/pr +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900
And the appropriate combinations I obtain:

Hey all,
First time poster.
I have BF2 running on my 55" tv at 1280x1024 with black bars on the side and its a blast to play with that big of a screen.
My question is: Can i get the same result on a 22" wide screen running bf2 at 1280x1024 (the native res on the 22 is somethingx1050)? would it give me the bars (which is what i want, i hate any kind of stretch), or would it stretch it to fill the monitor?
any help is greatly appreciated!

sry for stupid question but just not real smart when it comes to computers.
have widescreen, has auto adjust, i downlaoded drivers with digital, but using i believe analog cord, i know a definition term difference but unclear the effects of me installing digital and using analog and vice versa. my screen looks great, but my problem is im starting to lag and choppiness when a lot is happening. on my old screen i didnt have a problem 17" to 22 widescreen. i just need to fix the lag and choppiness. not sure if its a monitor issue or a graphics card issue and then how to fix it. i really appreciate all the help
thanks
heres what i am running:
P4 2.8Ghz
1.512 memory
geforce 7800 OC
i play on low settings on BF2 to get good gameplay, but I can play 2142 all on high, anybody have the same problem.

OK I have been using BF2 is WideScreen long before it got popular...
What you seem to have mised is not just the game shortcut will need to be changed. As this does change the game res. which looks great. The on-screen map and text and such will be stretched a bit. To fix this do this...
To fix your FOV for widescreen mode:
Go into your 'Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Settings\' directory.
Open 'VideoDefault.con' (if you're using the default profile)
If you created a new one, you'll have to choose the proper video.con file)
Look for the line that reads 'renderer.fieldOfView 1'
Change it to 'renderer.fieldOfView 1.1'
This will make everything else on-screen fit to a more accurate aspect ratio.

I'm using a new Dell 30" 3007 HC. I got my game to work. I deleted the entire "Profiles" folder, then revised the shortcut only.
The game plays and it seems to be OK, but how can I tell if it's 2560 x 1600 resolution?

I got mine running using the shortcut 'fix', but after 10-15 minutes of play the textures in-game start to disappear, and you end up with black everywhere - black jets, hills, jeeps and best of all, an entire black screen when trying to use iron sights!
Edit: Forgot to say, when I get the missing texture problem, pressing escape crashes the game back to desktop!
My res is set to 1360x768 on a 32" Samsung... err... something (has the 5000:1 ratio) :)
Just about to try adding "rem" to the resolution line in the video.con file...
Scort.
Update - adding the "rem" to the video.con file may have sorted my problem, just played a long(ish) game and had no issues.

Well, mine seems to be running fine now, only the odd CTD.
What I did was to revert the video.con back to it's original values (you could probably do the same by deleting it), then in-game I set the res to 1024x768, all options to high, AA to 6 and view to 100%.
After closing BF2, I changed the target to use the sxy/sxz options, mentioned earlier in the thread, so that the shortcut was applying 1380x768, and the game starts and runs fine.
Note: if you set 1360x768 in the video.con fine, the game wont start (at least for me).
Like I said, my game still gives the odd CTD, but I don’t get the problem with missing textures, so to me, it’s better :)
Scort.

OK I change the video.con settings to 800X600 and on the desktop shortcut I added the szx and szy. When the game starts I see MAX resolution at 1280X1024. My monitor can handle 1680X1050. When I go back to check video.con I see 1280X1024!!!!!!!!! I thought I changed it to 800X600. Am I doing something wrong here? When you say destop shortcut, is it the multiplayer one or the singleplayer one caus I changed the multiplayer one.

try making a copy of your "play battlefield 2" shortcut and put it on your desktop.
then edit the target line so it reads:
"C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050
you should then startup bf2 using that shortcut, and then choose either single player or join a multiplayer game. it wont change any of the settings in your video menu, or video.con. if you do look at that menu or file, your regular settings will still be there.
there are also a few BF2 threads in this forum:

Ok, i have did all this and I can get into the game and play, but I'm getting a ton of ghosting on alot of things such as jets or if i watch an arty cannon as it goes off. Just bought my 22" widescreen monitor yesterday and its supposed to be badass. Could this ghosting be because of the game being "stretched" to my 1680x1050 resolution or is it my monitor. Monitor is an LG L226W, 3000:1 contrast ratio, 2ms response. Pulled Vanguard up on it and it looks great, no ghosting.

I just bought an ACER 22" AL2216W LCD monitor with a 1680x1050 resolution, and I can't get BF2 to start with it.
I currently use Nvidia 6600GT 128MB video card, I'm not sure if it's able to support this resolution or not - that may be the problem.
Updated the Nvidia drivers today to hopefully be able to support this widescreen edition but it still fails. BF2 starts, goes to load, and exits (I assume it does not want to play in that mode).
I made the described changes to my Video.con file - failure. Launch the game from the customized shortcut - failure.

Alright guys, I've tried using the steps and procedure listed prior to no avail.
Initialy I adjusted the shortcut and video.con file accordingly, no success. So I deleted the video.con files, no success, scrapped the whole BF2 folder, and still no success.
Currently, the video.con file looks like so;
VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 2
VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 2
VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 2
VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 2
VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 2
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 2
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 2
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 2
rem VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off
VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 1
VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 1
So far as I can tell that would be the default settings created after I deleted the folder. The target for my BF2 shortcut on the desktop is as follows.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050
Help would be appreciated.

I'm having this same problem, using a Radeon 9800 pro with an Asus 22" monitor, game attempts to load and then just quits out, deleting the cache did not fix the problem.

Did the 2 things mentioned above and cleared my BF2 cache to get new shaders
interestingly enough the "rem" line is gone after I restarted again transferred back to the original entry. Apparently the override isn't working?!
I am able to get a full screen display and a running game, but I do not think the resolution is as detailed as it should be. Is there any way to check the running resolution in game?
Interestingly the max resolution shown in BF2 video settings when I use my new samsung 226 is 1360x1024@60Hz while I am able to see much higher resolutions

When running BF2 in a widescreen monitor, shouldn't one change the properties from 'fullscreen' to 'widescreen'?
Mine goes like this.

Anyways here is a screen-cap at 1680x1050 that is most likely auto-resized(1024x640) from photobucket.

You have a 42" Widescreen and your only running 1600x1000?
I run my 22" Widescreen LCD @ 1680x1050
What's the point of running resolutions higher than the screen's native resolution? The screen is just going to shove it all into whatever it natively displays anyway.
If his 42" is 1080p then 1600x1000 is probably matched dot-to-dot to his native display and as high as it will go.

Better to add no scale option from nvidia panel, and play with 1280x1024 even if you have widescreen.

You guys may want to try this widescreen utility:
It fixes the cuting off of the top and bottom issue.
You still need to add the +fullscreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900 (or whichever widescreen resolution you use) line to shortcut target.

This won't work for me no matter what I try. The game didn't even start until I took off the +szx 1400 +szy 900. My computer just does not like that command and crashes. I even reinstalled the game. Might this be because I only have a Plug and Play driver for my monitor? I have a gateway FPD1975W and they don't make a driver for it. >_>;;
i cant get mine to run at 1600x1050, it opens goes black, then back to desktop.
ive done both what u said and didnt work

I finally got this to run in full screen.Just want to know if I have this right, reason i'm asking is because i have no black bars at top, bottom and sides.
-Using nividia scale keep aspect ratio.
-1680x1050 res
- video con file is 800x600@60hz
-settings in game are 800x600@60hz
Just wonderd why no black bars?

Now I get to join the folk that are / where having issues with widescreen support. Just got hold of an Acer 22' monitor with a native res of 1680 x 1050. Followed the instructions at the start of this topic which didn't work, then tried combinations of the instructions which got me as far as the log in screen but CTD'd the second it completed log in.
Soluton turned out to be placing 'ren' not just at the start of
C:\Documents and Settings\Jono\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\Default\Video.com
but there is also a version of Video.com inside the folder entitled 0001
Placing 'ren' in both the video.con files in both those locations and then using the command line res force prompt finally got the game running. The confusing thing is shouldn't the game still work if I put 1680x1050@60Hz in BOTH these files? I tried that and it would just CTD seconds after double clicking the .exe
Well issue seems to be solved, I only spent a couple of seconds in a server just to test it actually got that far, will go away and play now and report back later.

Alright, nice guide...just want to make sure im doing it right.
1) I have a shortcut for BF2 on my desktop.
2) This is my 'target line'
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900
3) Now when I go to video options, mine is set to 800x600, but in game it clearly isn't, so there is nothing you have to do special after you add that command line?
Cause mine looks great, just making sure I did it right.

true that mann.
i still dont understand why they dont come out with a patch for widescreen resolutions.

Because EA's official stance is that widescreen resolutions give an advantage to those users at the expense of 4:3 users. I don't agree, but that's why there is no official support.

That is so lame.. Put a dampner on gaming for the rich, because the poor, cannot afford to buy a wide screen monitor.. I am not saying I am rich cuz I am not, just fell into a nice 24" wide screen monitor.. By HP. But we really need WS support. EA needs to get their S*** together and give it up.
BF2142 got widescreen in the last patch, so it might be on the cards.

I am trying to run BF2 on a widescreen laptop with Vista and a 8600M GS. Because of the interaction between Vista and the nVidia card, the refresh rate is stuck at 59.something, and because EA is smart like that, the game requires a rfr of 60. Apparently, the same video.con file allows me to change this (by setting it to res x res @ 59 rfr ) but my video.con looks like:
rem Optimal setting for CPU > 1400 MHZ
game.setGameDisplayMode 800 600 32 0
game.setDetailTexture 4
game.setShadows 1
game.setEnvironmentMapping 1
game.setGraphicsQuality 3
game.setLightmaps 1
game.setRenderWhenSpawnMenu 1
game.setMenuViewdistance 100
game.setEffectsQuality 3
game.setPerformance 3
When I run BF2, I get an icon in the middle of the screen, the screen blacks, then crash to desktop. What's missing and how do I put it in, or do I need to change something, or both?
Btw, running at 1400x1050 with a native of 1600x1024 on Vista Home Premium SP1, 32bit, have 1.41 patch, have not installed SF or the other ones.
Thanks!
I think you are meant to edit all the video.con files in Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\
Also I heard putting rem in front of the line works, not sure with 59Hz tho, you might have to put 59Hz in to force the game to use it.
If it works you can then edit the BF2 shortcut by right clicking on it, select properties and change the Target to "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +restart 1 +szx 1400 +szy 1050

I found the correct video.con file (in documents) and tried both options with that and changing the target. Didn't work, so I uninstalled, am defragging, and am going to reinstall again.

Im having trpuble, got a brand new monitor and everytime I click on bf2 it starts up then just crashes back to desktop - wont let me edit my video.con file and the shortcut thing wont work.
You may need to be logged on as Administrator to edit the files, open them with notepad.

I am the admin, i have the only account lol
If you are using vista you may have to turn off User Account Control by Right clicking on computer, select Security Setting on bottom left and turn off user account control.

edit the document and still cant get it too load - no idea what is wrong.
If you delete the battlefield 2 folder in Documents this will wipe all your settings. You will need to retrieve your account by clicking on manage accounts, so make sure you have your username/email and password.
If you can get into the game you can then set up your audio, video, controls etc.
If that doesn't work either your monitor runs under 60Hz or your game needs to be re-installed.
Yeah I can't get the game to run on a fresh install of XP SP3 - The game kicks me to desktop and I've deleted the Battlefield 2 folder in My Documents and tried just about everything - I'm having the same problem with Battlefield 2142...

just a thought and probably useless to you but something i am gonna try next time i have this problem.
