View Full Version : I'm not sure where to go from here with an Audio/VOIP problem

Okay, here's the scoop. I have a Gigabyte AMD 939 Motherboard with a AMD 3200+ Athlon. 2GB Ram, and a ATI 800GTOX video card. I started using the onboard Realtek Audio.

It sounded fine, but every time I tried to use the ingame VOIP the speaker icon would go from green to red as soon as I got 2 or 3 words out. I also had about 1 sound loop crash per gaming session.

I searched the forums here and elsewhere and found that the Realtek's were susceptible to the crashes. I also figured maybe the onboard was my VOIP problem.

So I bougth a Turtle Beach Riviera for $28 and once I installed it, then all my sound was very directional. I could hear for miles ahead of me, but if I turned away from something I couldn't hear it. In other words, I had no peripheral sound. Switching back to software rendering, and I still couldn't be heard in VOIP.

Now I should add each step along the way here I used registry cleaners and driver cleaners to clean out the old drivers.

So I went and bought another inexpensive card, the Audigy SE, and installed it. In hardfware mode, the voice in the game was very choppy. When I tried to use VOIP the speaker stayed green, but no one could hear me evidently.

Now I've switched back to the onboard audio since the end result is the same and I can return those other two cards.

Has anyone been in the same place as me? Is there something about VOIP that might be completely non sound card related? I did try basic acceleration in DXDIAG as well.

I posted this in TECH Center too but I think it belongs better here since it deals directly with BF2.

Unfortunately BF2 only supports a very small number of sound devices. Realistically you will only get it to work on a Creative audigy 2 or better, and I believe that even a couple of those wont work. Onboard sound is a definite no-no. If all else fails software mode SHOULD work for voip.

updating my realtek drivers worked for me. I think I got them from realtek's website. I still had problems with low mic input though.

Its probably the volume of the mic is set to ultra high so it cuts out at the slightest sount

Did you have the VOIP problem where it you "broke up on people" about 2 seconds into the communication.

How many speakers do you have set up? It sounds like the Turtle card was just not configured correct for your setup. You might check to see if 5.1/7.1 is enable/disabled to match your setup.

I just use the regular output for headphones. I have a splitter that lets me send audio to my old 2.1 speakers and my headphones at the same time. I truly do not believe this is a problem at all. In fact, It can't be.

One problem that I hope you realize with the three different sound cards you have used, none of them can do the audio in BF2 in hardware mode.

That being said, if you still have the Audigy (really should return it and try and get at least an Audigy 2 or 4 Value), there is one thing to check in regard to the microphone. For whatever reason Creative in their infinite wisdom (or stupidity) made it that when you install the drivers, it sets the mic to "What you hear". Only problem with that setting is that things like VOIP (or anything else similar, TS or Ventrilo) won't work. You need to go into the Surround Mixer (if you installed it, and if not into the Windows Sound and Audio Properties under Record), and change it to Microphone.

Neither card is listed in the cards NOT supported by BF2. I know the onboard cannot. Is there a list of SUPPORTED cards, not just unsupported?

It's a real short list. Any of the Audigy cards from the original to the A4 Pro (not including the LS/SE/DE models), and all the X-Fi series.
